Dwayne Leverock set for international return

Dwayne Leverock, the burly left-arm spinner that flew to fame during the 2007 World Cup, has come out of international retirement to join Bermuda's squad for the Intercontinental Shield game against UAE next month. Leverock, 38, became an one of the few positive icons from a maligned tournament in the Caribbean when he hurled his generous frame at slip to take a stunning one-handed catch and dismiss Indian batsman Robin Uthappa. After Bermuda failed to qualify for the 2011 World Cup in Asia during qualifiers in South Africa last year, Leverock announced his international retirement but stayed within the game by captaining club side Southampton Rangers. Now he is a surprise inclusion in the 25-strong squad that Bermuda national coach David Moore says he wants to form the basis of his team for the next year. "He's made himself available," said Moore. "He approached me about being involved. He told me that he was interested in being part of the programme and that's where we are at the moment. We'll just see how he goes, how he trains, and so on, but it's good to have him back in the squad, although the competition is quite stiff from the likes of Rodney Trott and Joshua Gilbert." The squad will be trimmed to 15 players for the four-day Intercontinental Shield match against UAE which starts on July 5.

Five years after a sensational catch by Dwayne Leverock stunned the world, another one from the family is ready to inspire Bermuda. As one of the iconic images in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, nobody will ever forget the unlikely sight of Bermuda’s Dwayne Leverock throwing himself at full stretch to catch India’s Robin Uthappa to claim one of the catches of the tournament. Watching in the crowd that day was his 13-year-old nephew, Kamau, who vowed that day that he too wanted to play cricket for his country. Five years on, Kamau is part of the Bermuda team that is taking part in the qualification event for the ICC World Twenty20 2012, but he hasn’t forgotten what inspired him to play for his country. “My uncle played in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 and when he played I said that I wanted to take Bermuda back to the World Cup again,” said Leverock. “I had played a bit of cricket before the World Cup, but my game got a lot more competitive after the 2007 World Cup. “I was about 13 at the time and had been playing junior league, but I then started to play the senior league after the World Cup, and got a lot more serious about the game, developed my skills and I am now playing at the World Twenty20 Qualifier. “There was great excitement in Bermuda (during the World Cup), but I actually attended the event. Schools in Bermuda were actually watching the games during classes – there was a lot of pride around the island. “I went to watch all three Bermuda games and I also went to see Bangladesh play India.” Recalling the day of the India game and that famous catch, Kamau confesses that it wasn’t unexpected for his uncle to catch the ball at slip, and admitted that his uncle has been a bit influence on his career. “He catches those all the time in Bermuda, so it wasn’t really a big surprise for me – it’s just the world got to see him for the first time” he says “He’s taught me a lot of things in my cricket career and I hope to play as well as he did for Bermuda,” he said. “He speaks to me all the time about what to expect in an event and what I need to do and how I need to go about things. It’s good to have a mentor like him.” Leverock, who is still at school, has moved to England in an effort to pursue his cricketing dream and the aggressive all-rounder has already attracted the attention of a couple of county sides, where he has played some second team matches. “I would like to play county cricket in England and play for Bermuda as much as I can and take our cricket to a higher level,” he said. “I went to England for a two-week trial and I ended up staying and going to school to pursue me my dream. My Mum sent me with my Godmother and I have been living with her since. “I have been playing a high level of cricket and I think I am improving my skills all the time. Bermuda skipper David Hemp, who enjoyed a successful county career with Glamorgan and Warwickshire in England, has been impressed by what he has seen so far and predicts a bright future for him. “Kamau is a good young cricketer and he has played a couple of second team games in county cricket – one for Surrey and one for Sussex. He is still learning. He is a good all-rounder and he has a bit of pace with the ball. He is a good solid left-hander, and it is good for Bermuda cricket, that he is emerging,” said Hemp.

Afghanistan and Namibia in first qualification final; Canada also in play-offs

The two so far unbeaten teams in the World Twenty20 Qualifier in the UAE remained unbeaten after today's final round of group matches, and will now meet in Thursday's first qualification final. Afghanistan were in action at the global cricket academy ground in Dubai this morning against Bermuda. Batting first, they reached 177-5 from their 20 overs, Mohammad Shahzad top scoring with 64 from 38 balls. Gulbodin Naib played a brutal cameo towards the end of the innings by smashing 26 from just 8 balls. In reply, Bermuda got a lot closer than many would have expected. In the thirteenth over, Janeiro Tucker cut loose and smashed Samiullah Shenwari for four consecutive sixes. The brutality couldn't continue though, as he was caught going for a fifth six. 71 from the last seven overs wasn't completely out of the question though, but some tight bowling from Afghanistan ensured that Bermuda couldn't cause an upset as they were restricted to 162-7 from their 20 overs, Aftab Alam the pick of the bowlers with 3-23. In the afternoon match on the same ground, Namibia took on Italy. The opening partnership of Raymond van Schoor and Gerrie Snyman put on 144 in 16 overs before Snyman was out for 78. Louis van der Westhuizen's stay at the crease was brief, hitting a six before being caught behind from his second delivery. Van Schoor stayed in to the end of the Namibian innings to finish on 73 not out, whilst Craig Williams clubbed 25 from 12 balls to help take the total to 194-2 in their 20 overs. Italy's reply started promising, with Michael Di Venuto and Gareth Berg putting on 53 before Di Venuto was bowled for 35 in the sixth over. Berg stayed in to score 47, but Italy fell away and were unable to get close to Namibia's total, despite captain Alessandro Bonora hitting a quick fire 40 from 22 balls. They were restricted to 167-8 from their 20 overs, losing by 27 runs. Afghanistan and Namibia will now meet in Thursday's qualifying final, with the winners gaining qualification to the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka later this year. Despite these two teams being the highest ranked at the moment though, the match will not be a full Twenty20 International even though the other two qualification play-offs on that day will be, as Namibia do not have ODI status. At Sharjah in the afternoon, Canada just needed to avoid a heavy defeat to Nepal to secure their spot in the play-offs, but they were given an almighty scare by the Nepalese who bowled well to restrict Canada to just 101-8 from their 20 overs. However Nepal's batsman couldn't finish the job their bowlers started and they found run scoring even harder than Canada. Sharad Vesawkar was the only batsman to get a start with 28 as Nepal were bowled out for 83, losing by 18 runs. Canada will meet Ireland in Thursday's play-offs. In other matches today, Kenya beat Uganda by 48 runs thanks to 57 from Collins Obuya, whilst Papua New Guinea beat Denmark by 14 runs, despite a sterling bowling effort from Denmark's Aftab Ahmed, who took 6-22, the seventh best bowling figures in List A Twenty20 cricket. The teams that didn't make the qualification play-offs still have their final positions to play-off for. Kenya will play Nepal and Italy will play PNG on Thursday as the teams seek 7th place, Bermuda will play the USA and Hong Kong will play Uganda on Thursday as those teams seek 11th place, whilst Denmark and Oman will play each other, also on Thursday, to try and avoid finishing 16th and last.
