^ I think you've got it wrong here - perhaps someone with more knowledge of Law can clarify, but the Indian Penal Code is universally applicable and overrides the Muslim or any other religious personal law. So, for example if some religion calls for murder, it does not override the punishment for murder under the Indian Penal Code. However, the personal laws of the religion can still be applicable.
How exactly are Muslims allowed to have 4 wives at the same time, then? In any case I'd rather learn from a lawyer to verify this...

In India, Goa is the only state to have a uniform civil code. The other states don't have that. Criminal laws are uniform across the country.

And this divorce thing is not a criminal law...it comes under civil / family laws where the code is not uniform. In other words Outsider is wrong about his suspicion that Muslims would come under the purview of the laws that govern the rest of society

True. But Muslims will come under the purview of uniform civil laws in Goa.

Yes' date=' the adultery can be ground for divorce, but the woman can be punished for the adultery itself as the man can be.[/quote'] Man can be punished only if he sleeps with another man's wife ,not if he sleeps with a single woman. That means a married man can have sex with a single woman but a married woman can't as the man she sleeps with can be punished for sleeping with her. That means a guy can have and affair as long as the other person is single but a married woman can't without putting her lover in danger. This means that the wife is considered the `property' of the man and hence can't be violated without the violator getting punished. The man on the other hand is not the property of his wife. The only thing equal here is that both can get divorce .

You mentioned in your post that this would come under Indian Penal Code and now you are saying it comes under civil laws - I don't know which purview it will come under. Indian Penal Code is the criminal law of India and is uniform.

But then isnt the law actually treating the woman as a property here' date=' belonging to the husband under a contractual agreement? So if someone else takes your property, you can file a case against him. The property of course, has no say in the whole thing. So in a way, its still demeaning to women[/quote'] true Besides being extremely demeaning. It denies the woman the right to revenge:--D.While she can divorce the AH she is married too she can't get even with the woman he had sex with.:(( The man on the other hand can divorce the wife and get the other man punished too.Complete badla!

'Revenge' is such a waste of time.
