rkt.india Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 http://www.theecologist.org/green_green_living/behind_the_label/268924/behind_the_label_diet_coke.html Far from being the healthy drink implied by its sports sponsorships, Diet Coke is a worrying cocktail of neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic chemicals Diet Coke was first introduced in the US in July 1982 and today it is the fourth most commonly consumed carbonated beverage in the world. Apart from being the beverage of choice for sugar-phobic individuals the world over, Coca-Cola is one of the longest standing ÃÄorporate partners (since 1974) of the FñÅñÓation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). In 1998 the company signed an unprecedented eight-year agreement to sponsor FIFA events not just the prestigious World Cup, but also the WomenÃÔ World Cup, the Confederation Cup, various youth championships and the upcoming World Cup Trophy Trip, a roadshow that will take the FIFA World Cup Trophy on tour to cities throughout the world. Last year Coca-Cola extended its FIFA sponsorship commitment until 2022, a move that prompted the preposterous statement by company Chairman and CEO, E. Neville Isdell, that CokeÃÔ recommitment to the worldÃÔ most popular sport ÃÂffords us a new opportunity to bring people closer together through football? It also helps them shift a lot of cans and bottles. A recent study by marketing information company ACNeilsen revealed that the Coca-Cola brand is the global leader among beverages, generating well over $15 billion in sales globally each year. Coke and Diet Coke each generate more than a billion dollars in sales yearly. Five countries the US, the UK, Germany, Canada and Brazil guzzle more of this supposedly healthy, sugar-free alternative to regular Coke than anywhere else in the world. Aggressive marketing like the FIFA sponsorship and clever jingles like âlways Coca-Cola keep Coke in our consciousness, but before you ÃÈrab a Coke and a smile at this yearÃÔ main event, consider just what you are putting into your body. Although Diet Coke has a strong association with sport and health, it is actually a worrying mixture of neurotoxic and potentially carcinogenic high intensity sweeteners (aspartame and acesulfame K), tooth and bone destroying acids (phosphoric acid) and DNA damaging colourings (sulphite ammonia caramel), as well as psychoaddictive caffeine and other undisclosed ÃÇl avourings? It also contains sodium benzoate, which can be broken down into the listed carcinogen benzene in the presence of strong acids, such as the citric acid found in this product. Soda manufacturers have been aware of this synergistic possibility since the 1990s, but without pressure from regulatory authorities to change their formula to prevent the formation of benzene, have continued to mix benzoates and acids. Ironically, the high fructose syrups used in regular drinks seem to slow this reaction down, and the formation of benzene appears to be most problematic in diet drinks.
punjabi_khota Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Pure fear mongering with bullshyte on top. "psychoaddictive caffeine", "potentially carcinogenic" Reminds of the article condemning the use of dihydrogen oxide.
ganeshran Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 Artificial sweetners arent really good for health despite being low in calories, but this article is going OTT to make a point.

Stuge Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 :hmmm: http://www.indiastudychannel.com/resources/73074-Harmful-chemicals-fresh-looking-vegetables.aspx Often we are being more fascinated for fresh looking vegetables thinking it to be more healthy and nutritious. Indeed they are, but now a days vegetables are artificailly being made to look more fresh and bigger in size. There has been an extreme in the field of adulteration of eatables and now a days a very harmful chemicals are being used in vegetables to make them bigger in size and to look fresh. Common chemical used to adulterate vegetables The chemicals substances used most commonly to adulterate vegetables in order to look fresh and fleshy are mainly a banned injection called oxytocin. The other chemicals used are calcium carbide (CaC2), a chemical used in explosives and also used for artificial ripening of fruits especially mangoes. Oxytocin in vegetables Oxytocin injections were used to augment labor in a full term pregnant women, however its misuse to terminate pregnancy made this chemical a banned product in India. The injection is administered in the vegetables either within the plant or just before it comes to the market which make them a fresh and fluffy appearance. Oxytocin injections are mainly injected in bottle gourds, bitter gourds, pumpkins, spinach etc. The customer gets attracted by its fresh and green look and thus feels that those are much better in quality. In recent times oxytocin has been also used in cattles for more milk production. However there are serious effect on health by using these vegetables and milk of such cattles which are described below. Calcium carbide in fruits and vegetables Calcium carbide are used in fruits for ripening. Though there is no exposure limit for calcium carbide but this doesnt make it safe to use. It can cause a serious damage to eyes and lungs. Harmful effects of chemicals used in vegetables The chemicals used in vegetables are hazardous for health, but these are being openly used especially in the Northern region of India like Delhi and nearby areas. Health hazard of calcium carbide The contact of calcium carbide can severely irritate and burn the eyes and skin causing permanent eye damage and ulcers on the skin. There may be irritation in mouth, throat and if inhaled can cause cough and wheeze. Some times there may be medical emergency like pulmonary edema which can be life threatening at times. Apart from that calcium carbide are also known to cause some cancer in animals, it can affect reproduction and may cause azoospermia. The conclusion lies that it is easy to get fascinated towards fresh and fliffy looking vegetables but it is necessary to ensure that it is safa and palatable without any hazards.
