I did not mean to hold the victim responsible (whatever bit) - legally speaking. It was in the sense that - in a not-so-safe area/locality/society, if one has to take responsibility of one's own safety and minimize the risk factors.. ( same as the bolded part in your quoted post)
Mariyam Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 I do not have any kind of statistics on me, but I remember reading in various sources that the overwhelming majority of the rape cases in India are by people known to the victim. A relative/ neighbour/ a friend etc. This whole discussion on the way a woman dresses is a total non sequitur, generally brought about by those who have failed in their jobs, i.e the police. As a % of the total rapes committed, I'm willing to wager that a miniscule percentage would be due to the woman dressing 'provocatively'/ dressed in western attire call it what you will. In our society, a woman who dresses 'boldly' is more likely to be better educated, aware of her rights and generally more street smart than a demure, confined to her house woman whose only rare occasional contact with the outside world is a visit to the grocer or a relative. It is this category which is the easy target. All this talk of dressing and hairstyles and perfumes is complete gibberish. How many rape victims can get a FIR lodged, especially if the woman is from a poor/disadvantaged background? The attitude of the cops is that a woman of that standing in life is not worth their time and effort. Do the police encourage women to report crimes? Hardly, if anything, they'd shoo them off at the slightest instance. There are tons of cases, where the police don't even do the necessary preliminary physical/medical investigations and ask the victim to come the next day, in the process losing lot of the physical evidence that the victim may carry on her.

Needforspeed Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 How on earth can anyone blame the women for getting raped, whatever by the dressing? Its the mentality of many Indian men which results in rape + many of them know they can get away with it. Why are rape crimes so low in countries where women dress much more boldly than in India. And how on earth Jeans and T-Shirt qualify as 'provocative'? Its almost the standard uniform of both gals and guys these days..b cos its so comfortable. Make the punishment harsh where rape is proven...long jail sentences and in extreme cases castrate the bas***ds. Do it in a few cases and then watch how the frequency of rape falls.
EnterTheVoid Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Somebody enlighten these idiot cops of this simple fact: Rape = Non Consensual Sex = Sexual Assault. Only an idiot with an IQ of a clump of dirt would bring in nonsense like her job, her hairstyle, her clothes etc etc

Why are rape crimes so low in countries where women dress much more boldly than in India Actually there are only 3 rape cases per 1 lakh population ,while in Sweden ,one of the most feminist country it is 53 ,in USA it is 30,now obviously people will say that cases are underreported in India which is true so if you if increase rape cases 7 or 8 times for india it is still lower than USA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_statistics

Many of those rapes were children. Many were by relatives. How do clothes come in here? Which country is the 3 cases you are talking about?

So the actual cases of rape are more than the number that is reported not only just in India but elsewhere too .

If its a different source how can you compare the numbers?

Alchemist Posted April 14, 2012 Author Posted April 14, 2012 Blaming Rape victims for the rape by saying that they were wearing provocative dresses is like blaming terrorist attack victims for their own death because they were not wearing bulletproof jackets.
