zen Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 From the list, voted Sehwag as when he fires, he can win the game on his own (which is difficult to do in tests) Take his triple against Pak, the 100 against SA at Kol, the 86 against Eng, the double in SL, .... His 100s not only demoralizes the opposition but also helps others to lach on to the opposition as well. His phenomenal SR insures that bowlers hv enough time to pick wkts
Ultimate_Game Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Has to be Kumble. Bowlers win you matches and India's stellar record at home in 90s and 2000s was largely due to Kumble :hatsoff:
zen Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 To me, when talking about the greatest, a match winner is someone who over a period of time helped Ind win with stellar performances. Being consistent and being consistent with coming up with stellar match winning test performances are different in a way esp. when in test cricket it usually depends up on how strong a team is Also our spinners usually do well in tailor-made conditions, so it's difficult to pick them as 'greatest' as most of the time you would know that they would run through the opposition in such conditions Coming back to match winning performances that set Ind up, it would be performances like Dravid's double at Adelaide, his 100 as Headengly, Zak's 5-for against SL, Sree's 5-er against SL and SA, Srinath's numerous opening spells and that 6-for against SA, the performances by Laxman like 281 and the countless match winning knocks he played under pressure, the super amazingly quick and big knocks by Sehwag If you see guys like Dravid, Laxman, Srinath and Sehwag have delivered consistent match-winning performances despite odds or by simply taking the game away from the opposition. Sehwag, imo, just edges out the others by a whisker because of the impact his innings tend to have on the opposition and how it helps others in his team, along with his one-man destruction ability like we saw against Pak, SA, SL, etc

jusarrived Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 6 votes for Tendulkar :hysterical: :hysterical: :hysterical:
Sehwag1830 Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 What is Sehwags highest score in a Test Match win outside the subcontinent ? 195 .
jusarrived Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Kumble VVS Dravid Sehwag Tendulkar in that order harbajan should not be on that list
zen Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 What is Sehwags highest score in a Test Match win outside the subcontinent ? In its history, Ind has probably won like 20 tests matches outside the sub-continent. So what's the point in asking for the highest scores? On the other hand, despite playing in sub-continent, Sehwag has scored big knocks with amazing SR under pressure (300 against Pak, 86 against Eng, etc), in tough conditions (Galle for example), that 100 in Kol after Ind lost the first test at Kanpur to get the momentum back. It's not like any batsman would have played such knocks .... Even his 300 against SA helped Ind draw the game as apart from Dravid, who benefited by playing along with Sehwag, the rest collapsed for like 100 runs if I am not wrong Don't drag the thread down by asking pointless questions or w/o understanding the context
pensionplan Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Kumble VVS Dravid Sehwag Tendulkar in that order With the choices in the list the ranking looks just about right though SRT can be placed ahead of Sehwag but certainly below VVS and RD for this category.
Sehwag1830 Posted April 10, 2012 Author Posted April 10, 2012 Did India win that match ? Do you know Sachin only lone contribution in winning a test series outside Sub-continent is in NZ in 2009. You are talking as if Tendulkar has won us 5 to 6 series outside SC.

He refused a single to shield the last man from strike despite being on 199 and carried his bat throughout that innings. Lets also not forget his 82 vs England chasing 387 at Chennai 2008. He was awarded the Man of the match.
ganeshran Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Batsmen can rarely win you test matches single handedly, its something that bowlers can do far more easily. One of the reasons for our poor record away from home is that we mostly had bowling attacks which were either rank mediocre or slightly above average.

If he didn't try to go for a boundary, he would have had 3 triple 100s (when no other Indian has one so far) but that's how he plays :P What's interesting about Viru is that he has played less than 100 test matches, and considerably less than Sachin, Dravid and Laxman, but has quite a few memorable innings! Also to avg 50+ with that kind of a SR and fewer not outs is in itself a break-taking test record 1989-today
akshayxyz Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Winning is a team result. Isn't it ironic that so called ,"I care for Indian team and not individual records", neutral folks who come up with fancy terms like - bhakti, fanaticism etc. lead the search of heroes out of individuals, filtered based on team results - as long as the stat filters point to their heroes. All of the players mentioned in poll (and sometime others too), have been match winners on their days - more than once - but even those stellar performances would not have resulted in win - if not for contributions from other members of the team, however small. And we have seen counter examples too, losing matches despite potential match-winning performances.

You are talking as if Tendulkar has won us 5 to 6 series outside SC. I was talking about Test Match Wins . Talking about Tendulkar , he has match winning scores that include 100 against the Windies in 2002 , 193 at headingly , 91 at Nottingham in 2007 , 79 At Perth and 160 against Nz in 2009 , all outside the subcontinent . Sehwag on the other hand doesnt even have a Single 50 to his name as a contribution to the team's win outside his comfort zone ( Subcontinent ) . I wonder what happens to his unmatched game changing ability on overseas tours which are the real yardstick of judging Asian Batsmen , so much for being the Greatest Match Winner from India .

So 5 test in 20 years for greater than Bradman batsman. :haha::haha: Here is Tendulkar's list of failure against great bowlers in Asia. SA 1996= Epic fail SA 2000= Fail Aus 2004=fail Pak 2004=fail SL 2008=fail Pak 1999=fail So funny the greatest Indian batsman can't score against strong attack to save his life.
