If you are going to punish the player, why not punish the franchise as well or at the very least investigate But as the peerless Srinivasan says IPL is run by "respectable" businessmen and these cricketers are just easy targets for BCCI to show they are doing something without really tackling the root cause. In all cases - Jadeja, Manish Pandey and now these players, it has always been players who have punished but the franchises have walked away free. Why should this be?

You are confused. TP's ban has nothin g to do with IPL. The chap was caught negotiating for spot fixing in aome random tourney, and video evidence backed it up ie he bowling a big noball) I agree its a tad too harsh , cmon who cares for an Indore tourney... but BCCI wants to improve its standing in the world's eyes, and also such strong detterance sends out a strong message to other wannabe fixers as well..

RE IPL teams paying more than stipulated, am quite sure the current IPL contracts do not prescrbe a limit over so called endorsements - so they arent by any means in the wrong. The cricketers couldnt differentiate - and bragged on... which without doubt put IPL and the board in negative light. Again the bans arent that harsh 1 year.

What are the chances that these bans will be overturned by the courts, given the history of ban of Jadeja being overturned (on account insufficient proof of his direct involvement in fixing) in early 2000s and that the laws of the land related to such cases haven't gone through any change?

Ladies and Gentlemen, it took a weak moment and Rs.5,000 for a person to ruin his life. Highest wicket-taker last year, banned for life this year. Lesson to be learnt for one and all.

Apparently players had asked the BCCI to have their lawyers with them when they deposed before the disciplinary committee, but the BCCI refused. Could go against the BCCI as the players were not allowed a fair representation.

With regards to under the table deals from agents representing the franchises...like Gambhir stated as well as others, the franchises need to fined or atleast warned...It is afterall the franchises that are enticing the players with all these 'extras' to play for their teams.

There's a difference in being 'harsh' and 'unfair'. You can be harsh with being fair too. BCCI definitely has missed that trick here.
