From surrendering the No.1 status in Tests and suffering major setbacks in both ODIs and T20, the last chance for Dhoni to restore his reputation as a leader with the Midas touch was the IPL. As irony would have it the league exposed more than a few glaring inadequacies in his style and functioning as a captain. Chennai Super Kings have been the model franchise in the IPL and a strong cricket culture has been the reason behind their success. If the defending champions fail to make the play-offs it will be the first time in five seasons and DhoniÃÔ adamant methods would have played a large part in it. Some of the mistakes were elementary and if not for the superior individual abilities, Chennai could have slipped long back. In spite of the top order crumbling against Kings XI Ravindra Jadeja was sent ahead of S. Anirudha who was the specialist batsman in the middle order. DhoniÃÔ fixation with a few players and lack of belief in many others was the prime reason behind ChennaiÃÔ below par performance this year. Suresh Raina continued to bat at three even when his form was not great. From promoting S. Badrinath to open and wasting the striking abilities of Anirudha and Albie Morkel, the errors were far too many. Chennai was led by a false sense of security through the event as they had played a game or two more than the other contenders at all stages and they never looked their solid self. Field positioning has never been the strength of Dhoni (in any format) and that in turn affected the confidence of the bowling unit. Ben Hilfenhaus searched for the yorker against Dwayne Smith only to end up conceding 14 runs in three delivers. The field did not allow the speedster to try the bouncer which would have been effective against a batsman clearing his left leg and swinging through the line. Any captain is only as good as his team but there are occasions where the leader can make a difference by making players understand their roles better. When we needed acceleration due to slow down we continue to send players who kept slowing things down more instead of sending some hitters ahead of the order. Lack of runs has been a major issue.

Number Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Can't blame him for not dropping Jaddu. It would have triggered criticism that Jaddu is undroppable for MSD from Indian team but not from CSK. Also you can't drop 2 mil. $ man. It'll make franchise look more stupid.

Needforspeed Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Dhoni's magic touch as a captain are over. He also doesn't seem to be enjoying his cricket these days. Due to commercial considerations, I think he will hang on to his captaincy till end of 2013 as India plays only at home. He will quit captaincy just before the India tour of South Africa (End of 2013) as he knows the team will be drubbed overseas. And I dont think the selectors will have the b**ls to drop him from captaincy.

youngindia Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Inadequate bowling. they spent 2 million on yet another allroudner when there was no necessity.but such wastage has been part and parcel of csk for four years. only it has not come out 3 allrounders will not make a difference. jadeja is the only one who may ever influence an IPL victory. vijay or raina or hussey are far more crucial.but they cannot be in great form all the time. you have to win with the bowlers as well. CSK only ever had this ability when murali and ashwin were on song. even if the batting is very good, there is little confidence they can defend the score with wafer thin bowling. the csk management has to make bowling a no 1 priority for next season. or there is going to be no impovement.
