Its good if the child takes it in a positive way, a strict nono if he isn't all that positive about punishment. I think the best way is to make them understand their mistake and let them get self realization.

So, while we are discussing whether it is OK to give a child a spanking, there's numbnuts who do this: http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/worst-parent-week-dad-puts-toddler-washing-machine-183500809.html

There's no way to know what the parents were thinking. Maybe they were trying to scare their kid into good behavior. Maybe they were just goofing around. Maybe they thought it would be funny -- there's a large sign hanging above the machines, saying "Junior Wash: $2.95." Whatever it was, it could have easily ended in tragedy. In the silent footage from the laundromat's security camera, the dad scoops up the diaper-clad toddler, shoves him head first into the front-loading washer, and shuts the door. He and the mom seem amused at first, but panic quickly sets in when they realize that they can't get the washer door open. It's locked automatically, and the tot is trapped inside as the washer starts to run. (Warning: The video is disturbing). The toddler tumbles helplessly, trapped in the machine, water pouring in, while the parents struggle with the locked door and then search for help. Finally, an attendant runs over and disables the machine. It takes a few more seconds to get the door open and the child out.

Let me quote this classic case. Does a 5 year old realise what he did was wrong? Why did he deserve to be physically hit when he was not aware he was wrong in the first place? Isnt this cruel? Of course I am sure he never did it again fter the beating (but if he was like me, he would have continued) but think of the unfairness of the whole thign and the kind of pain and uncertainity a 5 year old would go through at this point Parenting is a highly responsible and patient job. You have to teach your kids right from wrong. Love, affecton and reasoning wins oer even the most obstinate men, let alone children. Yes I have seen cases of spoilt and stubborn children, but in most of those cases, A)- They had bad parents who overindulged. Therer is a difference between not physically punishing children and spoiling them rotten by never saying no. B) - The child had already been physically beaten up while growing and was rebelling Personaly I feel there are no circustances where there is no alternative to physical abuse of a young child. I also know most people defending physical abuse here are by proxy defending their own parents and are uncomfortable about the fact that their parents can be wrong about anything. After all, they turned up great. I had the most loving parents on earth but I know for a fact how much one slap cost me both physically and emotionally as a child. (They were very few and far between as I guess with everyone here). They were the worst moments of my childhood and I am sure each one of us can vividly remember when we were physically hit by our parents such is the traumatic effect. I dont believe any child needs to go through the pain and humiliation of being physically assaulted, ost times for things he doesnt even understand. Parents should avoid short cuts and easy ways out. childhood is the best moment of a person's life and should be enjoyed Also, consider this. If you want a child to stop doing something wrong, which of the following do you want him to think a) This deed is wrong and I should never do this again because a person shouldnt do wrong things b) If I do this thing my parents will beat me up and hence I should never do it In the later case, wouldnt the child do the deed again if he knows no one will ever find out and beat him up

Like I said, I have never ever heard of one good reason to hit a child, something where it was required and where hitting the kid solved the problem.

what r u talking mate, how do u tell a 5 yr old why kissing neighbour gal is wrong,if hitting was the only way to prevent the kid from doing so in time being, then wats the harm.I'm sure it wasnt the thrashing that you probably think it was.slapping them is an indicator wat they did was terribly wrong.I know it because there were far worse things I did as a child n would hv continued if not for timely slaps.there was nothing else that could hv worked as I wouldnt hv listened to them.it had no traumatic effect on me that u r talking about.we can make them learn but still they can do certain thing like stealing out of temptation.fear helps in overtaking such temptations because the child knows his parents dont like it n it is very wrong.as he grows he realises why it is wrong n stops doing it anyway

There are no set rules to anything in life including parenting. It all depends on, as I say it very often, those four variables - t,s,p,c. Everything changes in t,s,p,c. If a 14 yr old kid gets horny and tries to molest a girl then beat the crap out of him so he knows that there are huge consequences when u treat other human beings as objects for your own consumption If a 12 yr old middle class kid abuses his friendship with a 12 year old poor kid by not allowing him to bat or bowl but only field and run around, then ensure he goes thru the same humiliation...nothing works better than empathy The default mode for parenting should be to keep the stick away (and I mean psychological sticks as well) and try to explain to the kids what they did "wrong" (trust me kids have amazing reasoning and understanding powers). But when an act is too gross then some kinda punishment is necessary. Sometimes sparing the rod will spoil the kid and many times using the rod will only dehumanize them

Being the younger one I was more often spared but it was pretty disturbing to watch my elder brother's case being taken. The bastard would turn around his frustration and hit me when no one was watching...lol!

first, you are underestimating the mental capacity of a kid. A kid is always willing to learn and will understand the difference between right and wrong once you explain it to him. But of course a parents should have the knack of making them understand and take lots of time and patience for that. But thats a parents job When you say you wouldnt have listened to your parents without a slap, thats in some ways a short coming of both parties. If they had taken the time out, you would have respected and obeyed them without a beating no matter how headstrong you were. Heck even the fiercest of dogs can be trained to be obidient without any beatings, children are much, much more intelligent and understanding. When a child is hit, it is traumatic and painful for him. Of couse being a child, he forgets it and adjusts to it, but they are still the worst moments of childhood. How does fear of a slap help in avoiding tempetation? If the child is avoiding tempetation because of fear and not because he thinks its wrong, he will still steal when he thinks he wont be found out. Now I do not mean dont be strict with your child, but yo can earn respect, trust and fear without lifting a hand on your child. And its the challenge of every parent how to do that and not chose the easy way

Honestly, I hardly remember being hit much. It was just my Dad's glare. Damn. And, how much the man has mellowed over the years. :D
