AdvaniJi (and others who oppose Modi) has realized that currently he is the most popular leader in the party and the ground level workers want him as PM candidate so they know that he has to be named the PM candidate but their opposition is about the early timing. Right now there are about 6-7 months to go for the elections so BJP can easily wait for a few more weeks. More importantly, Assembly Elections are due in 5 states in Nov and some CMs (especially Shivraj SIngh Chauhan) have said that Modi being named PM candidate would adversely affect the BJPs' chances so AdvaniJi and others are of the opinion that BJP should wait till after the Assembly Elections to name him PM candidate. But for a long time now a lot of money and time has been spent by certain people to vilify Advani in the media and make him look as if he is out to destroy the party and his sole objective is to be the PM but the reality is that he is one of the few people who understands the (negative) potential of Modi's candidate so he is opposing Modi and should continue to do so. BTW people may not realize this Rajnath Singh is slowly positioning himself as one of the top contenders for the PM's post despite calling him Modi's "friend".

Modi or not, its an uphill job. Rahul baba is going to be the youth icon one more time, his eat roti/100 days etc will win enough votes, macroeconomics be damned.

In the Urban areas there is substantial amount of opposition to Congress because of corruption, high prices etc but honestly speaking, BJP lost a big chance of getting these Urban votes by making Modi the leader for the elections because Modi is an extremely divisive leader - you either love him or hate him. In such a scenario I think a lot of Urban people who could have voted for the BJP but who hate him will be forced to vote for the Cong or other parties. Now I know that there is no other leader in BJP who could have made all those people vote for the BJP but going with collective leadership or under someone less divisive would certainly have made a lot of Modi haters vote for the BJP.

Isn't it funny that when Advani was named the PM candidate in 2007, there were suggestions he should be named only after Gujaratassembly elections. Advani did not have any of that and was named PM seclect 2 days before polling! His argument being party needed time before election to run an effective campaign. Similarly in 1995, ABV was named as PM candidate by LKA unilaterally. In any case, the generational shift in BJP was always going to be bitter whether it was Modi or someone else. Had it not been Modi vs LKA, could well have been Sushma Swaraj/ Jaitley/ XUZ vs Murali Manohar Joshi, though the battle would not have so prolonged. Good that now at least they are going to make the announcement and largely settle this. Modi would need at least 4-5 months put together a team and run an effective campaign. Hopefully the campaign will not be limited to a rally but through a yatra especially in Northern hinterlands with the focus on development, price rise, corruption and congress' utter mis -governance. Another person who has silently raised his profile in BJP is Nitin Gadkari. Has been a sort of trouble shooter and IF ( abig IF), he does deliver Delhi to BJP, will see his popularity soaring within BJP ranks.

I don't get this logic. How will Modi's PM candidacy be a negative for them in state elections and suddenly will become positive come the Lok Sabha elections. If Advani and Swaraj's support for his candidature was so certain, Kulkarni would not have come out so openly saying how will Modi run the country when he is even polarizing his own party. IMO, that was Advani speaking through Kulkarni.
BTW as per BJP constitution' date=' the party president Rajnath Singh can go ahead and announce the PM candidate without going to the parliamentary board or national executive.[/quote'] He can, but he will become a laughing stock after stating for months that parliamentary board will decide their PM candidate.

BTW' date=' Vajpayee is listed on the parliamentary board on the BJP site. In the entire saga, did not hear a word about his choice.[/quote'] Isnt Vajpayee too old and not active in politics?

Yeah, but he is still listed on their parliamentary board: http://www.bjp.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=174&Itemid=486
Its more of a ceremonial post for the Ex-PM.. My guess is Vajpayee may have dementia & Alzheimer as one doesnt see any photos too

Advani still doesn't like the idea of Modi as PM candidate but seeing that Modi is the most popular leader in the party right now, he has conveyed to the party/RSS that he still opposes Modi but he will respect the party's decision to make Modi the PM candidate. His problem right now is with the early timing. When the state CMs themselves are saying that Modi could harm the party's chances then what exactly is the hurry to make him the PM candidate so soon...he (and others) may also be thinking that if they wait till Nov and then Shivraj Chauhan wins another term then he also may become a contender :hmmm:

With NM's PM candidature being almost a done deal, will be interesting to see what the internal games in BJP. Modi will be under pressure to give up CM kursi, move to Delhi and give his 100% to the campaign. If not leave the CM kursi ,he will most likely be asked to name a deputy CM. And through that deputy CM, some games will be played through selective leaks. Should be a lot of fun. But IMO all such attacks internally or externally, will only help Modi.

It seems after 80 pages and 3164 replies, we have now got the answer for the Poll question about which this thread was actually opened. Will Narendra Modi be named BJP's prime ministerial candidate for 2014 General Elections?

Never realized there was a poll as well on the thread!! Or did it come after some other thread got merged with this one? Anyways, the real battle starts from today. Each and everyday counts, get the house in order and launch a united fight for 2014 (and before that the 5 state elections). And yes, if the likes of Advani continue to sabotage, sideline them completely. The party has wasted too much energy in trying to build a consensus when it should be spending every minute in being on the ground fighting the Congress.

Looks like everyone is on board and there could be no opposition in the BJP PB meeting. Just hope things remain smooth for the party from here on. A nasty prolonged battle ahead which will need plenty of hard work. Also for the Modi fans on ICF, you too have a role to play. Try to convince at least 10 ppl in your firends and family circle to vote for NM. Every vote counts.
