Number Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 To be a Muslim in India In India, the Muslim lives on sufferance. It is the Hindu who has freedom to attack India and its culture, its vulgarity. The Muslim who objects to something, no matter that it is obvious and visible, must qualify his argument. Usually, the qualification demanded is that he show himself as patriotic. In India, this is a term which comes out of the negative sentiment. To be a patriotic Indian, one is not required to be taxpaying, law-abiding, well-meaning or philanthropic. Patriotism is demonstrated through hating a particular country. The reason the Indian Muslim lives on sufferance is also rooted in this. You see, the Muslim is guilty of the original sin, by voting for Pakistan in the 1945-46 elections. He divided Mother India and his generations must carry this burden of Adam. Shahrukh Khan said this: “I sometimes become the inadvertent object of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of all that they think is wrong and unpatriotic about Muslims in India. I have been accused of bearing allegiance to our neighbouring nation rather than my own country. This, even though I am an Indian whose father fought for the freedom of India. Rallies have been held where leaders have exhorted me to leave and return to what they refer to as my original homeland.” He should have prefaced his remarks (which I find ordinary, inoffensive and accurate) as follows: “I don’t like Pakistan. My fans are mostly Hindus, whom I love more than Pakistanis.” Having said this, he would not have offended us, no matter what he then unburdened. Like children who need a pacifier, the Muslim offering opinion on prejudice must hold out this lollipop to Indians, whose natural view of him is coloured by his religion. At all points, he must remember this and mumble an Apologia Pro Vita Sua. In not doing this, and I’m surprised he didn’t because he should know a thing or two about Indian public opinion, Shahrukh Khan opened himself to an attack which goes in this fashion: “Aren’t you grateful, are you not satisfied, that we gave you — you Muslim! — such fame, such success? You didn’t whine about this then, did you? Now, the Pakistanis are lecturing us because of your remarks. You should be ashamed.” The self-congratulatory assumptions we make about ourselves — secular nation! World’s largest democracy! — are not particularly reflected outside of the Constitution. We should think about that. On Nidhi Razdan’s show on NDTV on the night of January 29, I was on a panel, discussing Narendra Modi as a prime ministerial candidate. In the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corner was a woman called Meenakshi Lekhi. Midway through the discussion, she asked a soft-spoken man, Najib Jung, vice chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia, if he thought Indian Muslims wanted Pakistan. Why did she bring this up? I don’t know, and there was no occasion to. But it was dropped in casually because it’s the natural thing to say to a Muslim here — hey, are you guys Pakistan-lovers? Tell us the truth, now. As a writer, I can imagine the pressure on Muslim writers who are aware of India and the space they operate in. MJ Akbar wrote an unthinking paean to the BJP’s idiocy after Pokhran, and I suspect that wasn’t because he’s a fan of nuclear weapons. It’s all quite frightening, or should be. It doesn’t surprise me at all. In India, it has always mattered who says something. What is said depends not on the intellectual content but which side it has blown from. How it is said is also always more important than what is said because the Indian is easily offended. Ashis Nandy shouldn’t have assumed that he could be subtle and clever only because it was the anglicised middle class he was speaking to at Jaipur. They are cut of the same cloth as other Indians. Quick to emotion, barely literate about anything whether their own culture or the West’s, and powered on and on by an asinine media. http://tribune.com.pk/story/500683/to-be-a-muslim-in-india/ Darling of secularists Mr. Akar Ahmed Patel letting Pakistanis know how Hindus treat Muslims in India. :two_thumbs_up:
ganeshran Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 could be. id give him the best chance of all. Somebody who has done it. But he will give plenty to criticize for anti modi brigade. we are a developing economy. bound to have downsides What are your parameters for a successful BJP government? Obviously has to be far better than the current Congress government because that is what BJP Modi has been promising us all along
scorpio90 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Minority Report: Is Muslim voting behaviour changing? http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/opinion/comments-analysis/minority-report-is-muslim-voting-behaviour-changing/articleshow/33880331.cms When concerns of azlaf (backward) and arzal (dalit) Muslims are different from those of ashraf (upper caste/class), how long will they vote alike? The upsurge of pasmanda Muslims is redefining Muslim identity and giving it a class-orientation. Their grouse is that despite the 85% share of backwards, like ansari, ghosi, dhobi, idris, etc, among Muslims, the political leadership is grabbed by upper-caste Muslims like Salman Khurshid (Congress), Naseemuddin (BSP) and Azam Khan (SP). Their ire is also directed against ulemaand Muslim organisations that ignore their concerns. Backward Muslims are better placed vis-a-vis ashrafs to win. In 2009, the BSP gave tickets to 17 Muslims in UP; three to backwards, out of which two won, and 14 to ashrafMuslims, out of which, again, two won. So, if non-BJP parties refuse to provide them due space, they may turn to the BJP. The plight of Muslims may not, actually, apply to all Muslims, especially ashrafs, many of whom are landlords, educated, employed and politically empowered. But a large section of pasmandaMuslims may be really deprived. The "Muslim picture" is changing at the grassroots: Muslim representation has gone up in assembly and municipal bodies in Uttar Pradesh. Muslim representation in the assembly may be 17.1%, close to the Muslim population (18.5%), but at the district level, we find a Muslim upsurge. In 13 out of 70 districts, the share of Muslim MLAs is 10-25%; in 21 districts, it is 25-50%; and in five districts (Moradabad, Rampur, Amroha, Balrampur and Shrawasti), there are 50-70% Muslim MLAs. In municipal bodies, there are 3,681 Muslims elected out of a total of 11,816 members, pushing their representation to 31.5%. Political empowerment of Muslims is a result of neo-liberalism that has created a neo-rich middle class of Muslims. As the political space in Congress, BSP, SP or established regional parties is occupied by uppercaste Muslims, the BJP may become an attractive destination for them. Backward Muslims may also look at the secular-communal discourse differently. Their experience in BJP-ruled states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Bihar (in coalition with Nitish Kumar) made them realise that life there was no different from non-BJP-ruled states. On the contrary, in some such states, better governance may have brought some prosperity. Gujarat 2002 riots and the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid issue are usually raised during elections. But are Muslims still interested? Using these issues, non-BJP parties try to create fear among Muslims. But insecurity among Muslims, if any, may be akin to that faced by Hindus, though the latter's insecurity does not figure in the secular-communal discourse due to their greater numbers. Muslims, including pasmandaMuslims, may still vote tactically to defeat the BJP, but a small section may vote differently. Such voters may renounce the "marriage model" of relationship with a party that warrants voters to be wedded to a party. Instead, they may go for a "stock exchange model" that permits voting for a party that promises better returns. Modi's backwardcaste status may play a key role in this. Recent CSDS studies substantiate this. While 3% and 7% Muslims voted BJP in 2007 and 2012 respectively, their support may go up to 11% in this election. This signals a paradigm shift, making the BJP more inclusive and Muslims more autonomous in their voting behaviour. Muslims are treated as a bloc, but in reality they're very much fractured, with the ashraf's controlling the bloc voting efforts, which the ajlafs and esp arzals seem to be unwilling to follow. If this happens everywhere, the Muslim vote will cease to exist, enabling a greater development-oriented unified bloc for the BJP.

JaiRamesh2 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 To be a Muslim in India http://tribune.com.pk/story/500683/to-be-a-muslim-in-india/ Darling of secularists Mr. Akar Ahmed Patel letting Pakistanis know how Hindus treat Muslims in India. :two_thumbs_up: There is already a good summarization (in the form of parody) of Akar Patel's rants at http://www.newslaundry.com/2013/12/17/modi-magic/ a little extract: Sonia is slim and fit. At the dining table, she is probably disciplined. She brings the European’s refinement to our otherwise crude politics. She has brought up her children superbly. Both act correctly and modestly. Rahul is quite educated, getting his post-graduation degree at Trinity. From what I have read of him, Rahul is observant and intelligent. He has learned the limits of what the state can do to make India more liveable. He has discovered an essential truth about India. He is doing what Jawaharlal Nehru was doing with Gandhi before 1930, the discovery of India. When Rahul speaks, he usually presents an Indian reality which has come from an uncommon understanding. Though he is good looking, he doesn’t deploy his charisma. By this I mean he doesn’t pose and make heroic statements like Narendra Modi does. He chooses not to. When one is as famous and as good looking as Rahul Gandhi, charisma is a function of deployment. No one takes him seriously, he is one those writers who gets commissioned when there is slow news on Modi and communal issues.
scorpio90 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 iShiva @iShivaa 59m @mediacrooks Aakar Patel is the same Aakar Ahmed Patel earlier with The Mid Day. Why hide his middle name, is he ashamed of being a muslim?!
JaiRamesh2 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Saving Bharatiyata from http://www.mediacrooks.com/ a little extract: There is desperation in the media; there is desperation in the Gandhi family. “Power corrupts but the prospect of losing power corrupts even more†said Ram Jethmalani. On April 14 Sonia Gandhi came on TV and made a grand appeal to people. She said her party was fighting to protect the “very heart and soul†of India from those who sought to change it and divide the people of the country. As they taught you in school, the heart and soul of India is the “Gandhi family†and everything else is crap. Okay? She begged “We want unity. They want to impose uniformity. They say, ‘Just believe in me’… Their vision, clouded with hatred and falsehood, their ideology, divisive and autocratic, will drive us to the ruination of our Bharatiyata, our Hindustaniyatâ€. Astonishing! We have to now learn “Bharatiyata†from some Italian. You know, I doubt if SoniaG can even sing our National Anthem impromptu (a senior Kerala Congi could not sing it at a function). Err… asking if she can recite “Vande Mataram†impromptu would be outright foolishness. For a woman who claimed “power is poison†the level she goes to retain it is the story of her life. Someone rightly pointed out that in 2004 SoniaG only gave up “accountability†not the PMship. She is accountable for nothing it seems and was a back-seat PM as everybody knew and the recent book by Sanjaya Baru confirmed. This hateful bile on TV went unquestioned by any media editorialist. To me, the only ones who hate Bharat and who want to destroy are the Congis and their heads. The Gandhis seem to believe that India is some kind of “real estate†inherited by them. The number of allegations in the land scams against Vadra is mounting. There are also allegations of land scam against the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Count the number of towns, townships, projects, IT parks and such real estate named after the Chinese Gandhis. And all this hateful fear-mongering from SoniaG and the other Gandhis is for what? Just because Narendra Modi challenges them like nobody has ever done before. And he rightly does so. The SoniaG hate-appeal is the culmination of a gang of Indian and International media and motley crews who are hell-bent on wanting their corrupt ways of life to continue.

Haarkarjeetgaye Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 What are your parameters for a successful BJP government? Obviously has to be far better than the current Congress government because that is what BJP Modi has been promising us all along why should it be far better. do we remember what Congress promised in 2004 and in 2009? Why should it bother people so much if Modi said this or that. This is election. People will promise heaven. Even Kejriwal said, 7 days mein Sheila andar. did he do it? Election time clouds thoughts because there is so much propaganda. so we should talk about this once results are out. will be so much more a meaningul discussion Nevertheless, parameters will be ( and this may be for Rahul led Congress also because I dont overtly support BJP. My issue has been with people who abuse Hindutva and accuse Modi of being a murderer. If Hindutva was intolerant we would have been a purely Hindu country today and all our ancestors murderers) lasting 5 years. Dont think many care about it on this site or this is being dismissed by AAP supporters as BJP stands the best chance to do this. This is very very important. Getting GDP growth back on track.- 7 + % Increased coverage of water + electricity. continue the trend or better it Improved Infrastructure and international connectivity with more focus on Tier 2 cities. I cant think of any more at this point.

ganeshran Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Makes some sweeping statements, without mentioning any right wing Hindu group. should have at least named RSS/SS/VHP. are you still using chaddi as an epithet for all religions? Nope this is specifically for right wing Hindu chaddis. The idea that a Muslim in India has to be grateful to the Indian majority for not treating them the way Pakistan has treated its minorities is ridiculous, given that these people are actually using Pakistan as a benchmark for something related to basic human rights, This is the thought process behind demanding patriotism from Muslims by singing the national song and having to wear their Indianness on their sleeves.
