ravishingravi Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 What are the board's thoughts on him? I have seen him since his debut match and he has to be one of the toughest cookies in game esp. in ODIs. I dare say potentially as good a finisher as Bevan. Last night's innings reinforced this fact.

He is a very poor player of spin bowling and wouldn't have done anything had Ajmal been there.

And not mention to Paki fielders fielded like our donkeys in England last year.

ganeshran Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Handy all rounder but potentially as good as Bevan? Bevan was arguably the best ODI finisher the game has ever seen. :cantstop:
Sehwag1830 Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Perhaps OP hasn't seen Mathews against decent spin bowlers. He would have done zilch yesterday had Ajmal played .

cameron_black Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 mathews is very susceptible v spin. he's played the finisher role many times before for SL, successfully too, but has a long way to go before some compares him with bevan. but for SL who've lacked a decent middle order bat who can hit big when needed, mathews is more than enough.
thongale Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Comparison with Bevan and Dhoni is just meh. Mathews is not yet there, and may never will be there. His greatness will come once he moves to the top order, playing in first four spots, and better tha being a finiser, he will set up tough chases. But having said that he's good enough to be selected for any ODI side in the world ATM.
Number Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Lots of their young players seem to be poor against Spinners. Tihirmane, Chandimal and Mathews, they all play for the turn rather than coming forward. May be they are focusing more on the back-foot game, to suit their game for conditions outside SC. Mathews will move to top order after their top 3 retire so he won't be used in that role much. Decent finisher not in the league of MSD, Bevan.

Most of the time his strike rate was low. When India put up over 300 plus at the Gabba.. Bevan couldn't pull it off. His big plus was his running between the wickets and great stamina. If the runs required is 30 in 2 overs. Between Bevan and Dhoni, i would go with Dhoni 100 out of 100 times.
Lurker Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 Bitter for what ? Go and jack off to Robelinda videos. WOW! What the eff is wrong with people these days....

Decent finisher not in the league of MSD, Bevan.Thirimanne and Chandimal are better players of spin than Mathews. Chandimal is particularly good against them. These guys pick the way it is spinning, but has to improve on playing length. On other hand Mathews entirely playes spin on length. He will play spinners like Swann and Vettori better than Ajmal or Ashwin, who spin it both ways.
Old guy Posted June 19, 2012 Posted June 19, 2012 he will be one of the best finishers in the future and then add his bowling.. dont know abt tests but in odis he adds so much value
Crookbond Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 WOW! What the eff is wrong with people these days.... Premature hair graying? :dontknow:
Executioner Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Dhoni? nah, not yet. Its definitely bevan without question. Dhoni may be among the top 5 but not the best yet. And I dont think some1 like pollard can ever be a good finisher. Pollard only can hit the ball hard, he doesnt have the ability to get runs out of unplayable deliveries and has some serious problem against short pitch bowling Mathews is still far from being labelled as the next BEVAN
Old guy Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 i dont get it .. why not dhoni but bevan ? yes dhoni is actually a very good odi player in every condition.. he was even our most consistent batter in this last australian series (cb series) he has won countless games... played well in big games.. like world cup final.. did well against every team wht more does he needs to do ?
Crookbond Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 A lot of players would actually choose Dhoni over Bevan specially due to him being a WK.
