Sehwag1830 Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I know India was favourite in that WC along with Pakistan. And in semi-final against England too we were favourite . So what was people's reaction once we lost that match ?Anybody who has memories of that match.
Ultimate_Game Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Before my time but we should have won that tourney. We should have managed to beat Eng & Aus in sub-continent with the team we had. Wish we had somebody like Dhoni those days who could "twirl his bat" after winning the World Cup
vvvslaxman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 My memory is everyone rejoiced like anything when Miandad's wicket was sent cart wheeling by Bruce reid. :cantstop:
Ultimate_Game Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I have memories of Gavaskar being bowled Wasn't it his last innings in intl cricket?
maniac Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Wasn't it his last innings in intl cricket? Yes....bowled by defraites(just checked cricinfo for that one) of all people....one of my first cricketing memories.

The Indian semis happened in Delhi and Sehwag was the ball boy, the little kids who fetch balls outside the boundaries. Graham Gooch played a great knock and once hit Maninder Singh outside the rope. The ball went to Sehwag, who pocketed and ran off the ground. Kapil Dev chased him and they were stopped by Dileep Vengsarkar, who was sick and couldnt play the game. Dileep vengsarkar, perhaps mad because he wasnt playing or maybe because India was losing, beat the living $$ hit out of Sehwag. Meneka Gandhi made this a Human rights issue. This is the reason why Vengsarkar could never become the captain of India and Shreekant was selected ahead of him as skipper to Pakistan. Doubt anyone, specially Sehwag, ever forgot that.

ganeshran Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 He is joking. SRT was the ball boy IIRC in the 87 semis

So in short you can say Kapil Dev wasn't good enough like Dhoni to twirl his bat and lead India to WC final. :cantstop:

Desi Cartman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I only remember Chetan Sharma's hat trick from that WC ...

Robelinda Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 [ame= INDIA v ENGLAND - SEMI FINAL 1987 WORLD CUP - YouTube[/ame]
vvvslaxman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 last 10 overs 52 required 5 wickets in hand. Harmless hemmings was bowling. It was pretty pathetic that India bottled it. Kapil dev got lot of cop after that dismissal. Also poor captaincy by Kapil dev. Gooch had only one shot against spinners which was sweep. Not enough protection there.

Didn't know that was the match equation. I always knew we were the favorites going in but never knew we were so close to the win. This match shows why Dhoni is highly rated by Indian fans coz I can bet my bottom dollar that if Dhoni was around with that equation, we would have reached the final. In fact before Dhoni, these sort of collapses and bottling it while chasing was the norm for India. Someone rightly said that you realize the true worth of something once you lose it. I guess we will realize how good Dhoni has been over the years once he hangs up his boots. I doubt we will get another cricketer like him in the near future
Deleted_User_1 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 People were celebrating like crazy the day before when Pak lost to Aus. Then India lost to Eng in Bombay and it was like WTF?
Lurker Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 People were celebrating like crazy the day before when Pak lost to Aus. Then India lost to Eng in Bombay and it was like WTF? I beleive that statement needs to be clarified. People were celebrating not because of hostility, as prevalent these days, towards Pakistan. It was more of a pre-celebration of Indian win. Australia was really in build-up phase, England were hardly a team that was considered a challenger and India was coming into cup as hot favorites, host and current world champion. India-Pakistan-West Indies were hot favorites, by finals they were all out of the tourney :cantstop: Back to Sehwag, after the beating he was admitted to Safdarjang hospital. There is a statue of him at the front entrance for those who are in Delhi area.
