another  This isn't about Steyn V Sachin face-off:giggle: Another angle for clarification: Despite Amla's Triple ton at the Oval (on a flat pitch), and if the next game was another flat pitch, and you had to pick between Amla and Steyn, who would it be?
Problem is since you mentioned "Tendulkar" in the OP most of the people won't see beyond that and will treat it as a sign of "disrespect". You will be better advised to change the OP to have a separate bowler-batsman combo (as you mentioned just now Amla-Steyn) like Ponting-McGrath, Lara-Ambrose etc. or take out all the names and make it a generic thread about choice between "great wkt taking fast bowler" and "all time great batsman" so as not to hurt any feelings :giggle:

That's an easy one U_G. The question was contest between Sachin and Steyn not Steyn and India. Who was the winner in that contest? A batsman who made a mockery of your fast bowling by hitting at his will.
What's the point of "making a mockery" when you end on the losing side and the one you made a "mockery" of ends up with figures of 5/48 :hmmm: In fact i can't even see the mockery part here  And you still don't get it do you? It's not a face-off between the two players like "Lion Vs Tiger" thingy but who would you want to have in the team so that the team does better overall, i.e. if a batsman scores a 100 and his team loses and if you could replace that batsman wit a bowler who could take a 5-fer and make the team win, it answers the question that the bowler would be a wiser choice and would help the team more.

And that's the sad part. You can't be a fan and criticize someone. You post Tendulkar and all of those would come up with what he has done for India for the past 23 years. Jeez! Just pick one, explain your reason and move on.

No mate, its not the question which you have asked. You are not asking who should I have played either Sachin or Steyn in particualr test. You are asking whom I should have opted to Debut for India. Which means : If I opt for Steyn, it means Sachin would have never debuted or never have played for India :omg: . If I opt for Sachin, it means that things should have been exactly as they are today Sachin for India and Steyn for SAf. Do you know how biased this question itself is. Steyn would have not played till 2012 from 1989. He can't no human being can play consistently for so many years, so my choice is Sachin. I love my Indian team as it is, for making it perfect I dont want a foreigner to play instead I would like my Ishant and PK to bowl like Steyn.

Way to miss the point! let me rephrase it in a different manner. Let's say you have a time machine and you can go back in time, and let's say you have the option to have Sachin Tendulkar the ATG we have right now, or Sachin Tendulkar the great fast bowler who will go on to have a bowling average of 22 with a SR of 50. Whom would you pick then? Which avatar of Tendulkar would you opt for - Tendulkar the batsman or Tendulkar the bowler? This thread is not about bringing Steyn in from outside and making him an Indian but about who would have benefited us (Team India) more if say we had an option of unearthing an ATG fast bowler instead of an ATG batsman.

Ok Thanks for clearing ab bujhaya humko. Dekho for this let's go to the early 90's era itself. India on tour of England, India in 1992 WC, India on tour of Australia 1991-92 oh comeon man Sachin, the batsman. Lets go to mid 90's 1996 WC, England tour of India, 1998 Shajah. oh man no Sachin the batsman. Lets go to early 00's and late 90's. Chennai test, India 3-0 loss to Aus, '03 WC, Shoaib Akhtar's face oh come on no way it will be Sachin the batsman. Lets move forward..................... Forget it Sachin again. Phir poochega phir yahi answer doonga Sachin.

I am fine with the answer and have no issues with it coz there's no right or wrong answer in this case. The answer would be a reflection of which aspects of the game an individual values more - run scoring or wkt taking. I was simply clarifying that the thread was not about Sachin Vs Steyn but more of an ATG Batsman Vs ATG Bowler :two_thumbs_up:

You can't say you didn't see it coming as I warned you to remove "Tendulkar" from the OP :winky: Problem is that people don't even open up their minds to different possibilities. For example to the guy who has listed SRT's heroics but simply doesn't get the point that if say we had a Tendulkar the ATG bowler (Steyn) instead of the batsman we could have had the following (using Khalpat's examples but turning it around)... India on tour of England resulting in a win coz of 28 wkts in the series for the bowler, India in 92 WC reaching the semis coz of the way Sachin the bowler took us single-handedly to the knockouts. In mid 90s India winning in Eng coz of Tendulkar the bowler unplayable for pommies, India's tour to Aus in 99 a close 2-1 loss instead of 3-0 coz Stendulkar the bowler along with Srinath & Prasad proving handful for Aussies. WC 03 Sachin the bowler running through Pakis like a knife and bowling them for a low score etc. Some folks are so hung upon Tendulkar that they can't see the possibilities that could exist or how our cricketing landscape would have changed if we could have had one fast bowler averaging 22 with a SR in 50s. Who knows he could have finally been the bowling hero for our youngsters and we would have plenty of fast bowling options instead of trundlers we have

bcoz steyn is currently playing a test match nd has taken a five for' date=' the op could easily spot steyn,so compared him with sachin[/quote'] That only explains Steyn as the top of mind over Mcgrath and Marshal, it ofcourse has no bearing on the fact that Steyn and those superior to him will beat Sachin in the context of the poll or for that matter a Ponting or Lara.

should have been mcgrath or tendulkar i dont see how u can compare steyn with tendulkar..steyn is awesome but he still has long long way to go to be counted as atg imo

A batsman can play for even 20 years. But bowlers rarely play over 10-12 years. A Steyn in 1989 would have ended his career around 2000. But Sachin is carrying on till today.

fast bowlers rarely play long.. but spinners play untill they die

U_G In the 90's you seriously think that having a great pace bowler with batting lineup of Shastri, Siddhu, Amre, Somsundar das, Vikram Rathore, JAdeja, Robin Singh, Ramesh, Majrekar, Nayan Mongia and all we would have won more matches. Except Azhar who would have scored that too on the condition that Azhar played without other influence :winky:. Contrary question how much you think Amla, Kallis, ABD, Smith contribute in winning the match for S.AF. Haven't we discussed and agreed that winning matches is due to all 11 players contribution. Will everytime Steyn save a team which gets all out at 160 or 170. In today's context no doubt anyone will choose Steyn over Sachin but wat about the 90's. Sachin is once in a life time player. Steyn in 90's would have been another great in rank of MArshall, Mcgrath, Wasim, Waqar, Donald Ambrose etc. and looking into the lifespan of pace bowler Steyn would have passed his prime till early 00's. Might be better question would have been now who do you want more Steyn or Kohli. I am not sure whether you guys have seen matches during 90's but I am not convinced.

I do think that the main reason we have under-achieved as a cricketing nation is coz of lack of quality pace bowlers, and it's a catch 22 situation. We had likes of Vishwanaths, Gavaskars, Vengsarkars, Azhars, Tendulkars, Dravids, Gangulys etc. but never a role model for fast bowlers other than Kapil who wasn't really a genuine pace bowler like Holding or Marshall. I would want to have even one genuinely hostile pace bowler so that the next generation can get excited watching him and then we will have kids who would want to be fast bowlers instead of batsmen or spinners. unless we get quality pacers we are destined to be mediocre with a breakout here and there, as you cannot be successful consistently without a good bowling attack, and a good bowling attack needs you to have 1 or 2 good quicks. That's why when you historically look at all the good teams they will have one thing in common - a great bowling attack with genuine pacers. My belief is that a team with genune wkt takers and average batsmen would trump a team with great batsmen and average bowlers more often than not, and that's would I would love to have a genuine wkt taker than a ATG batsman if I have the choice.

Sachin tendulkar ! Magical batting...amazing technique...superb batting shots.. Makes batting sexy.. Entertainment personified :hail: If the offer was 2 Steyns for a Tendulkar, then that would be enticing :D
