saneindian Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 My only gripe is he is getting more support than other players based on "talent" factor. If he is like 18 or 19 i wouldn't mind. But he is 25. batsmen are more matured around that age. His chances in the side should be based on merit not based on future predictions. We are doing no justice to other players. He could go on to become the finest modern era batsman. But at this point i feel he is getting everything easy. Make him work harder. It might be good for him and India. He was dropped from the side for the WC and made a comeback to the side only after piling on the runs in domestic cricket (and in the IPL). Look at his performance since then - MoS in WI (without him we would have lost the series, won us lost games) on not so batting friendly wickets in a team without Sachin, Sehwag, MSD, Gauti - Got injured in the 1st ODI in England - Came back vs WI at home and won us the series , MoS in that series again - Was in and out of the side in the CB series - Scored a crucial 68 vs Pak in the Asia Cup , and came in at the death vs BD 21 innings, 718 runs@45 with 7 50s..not bad if you look at the overall record since his comeback Essentially its the CB series and the ongoing ODI series where he has failed. So to say he has been getting countless opportunities isn't exactly correct. Someone who has taken the team to victory from nearly lost situations (92/6 chasing 225, 59/5 chasing 211 etc) does deserve a longer rope. Not too long ago, in the Australia Test series, there was a growing clamor for replacing the 'test failure' Kohli with Rohit for the 3rd test. The team management decided to back Kohli and look how well he has responded since then. No wonder they are trying to do the same with Rohit. Unfortunate for the likes of Manoj Tiwary but remember how Ganguly backed Yuvraj ahead of others and we have seen how that has helped Yuvi's ODI career.

Last 10 innings huge disappoint but for 1 good innings. His comeback success ended long back. It lasted just 2 good series much like Ishant enjoyed against West Indies. Suresh Raina is forced to play down the order and take on a much more difficult job while our "talent" is hatching eggs at the top of the order.

Do not want to make this a Raina vs Rohit thread but did Raina not fail vs the WI (home and away) and in the CB series? Did Raina not fail in almost every series starting with the tri series in Zim till the WC in 2010-11 (19 matches, 364 runs@23 with just 1 50). Did the team management not back Raina? What did that result in? Crucial knocks vs Aus and Pak in QF and SF and many more..
TheWall Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 According to Gambhir, rohit is the best player in the nets.. so why not let him play only in the nets...
skindia Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Its unfortunate that player like robin uthappa hasn't got single chance in odi after age of 23...He last played odi in july 2008 after that he is performing in challenger trophy and vijay hazare trophy yet he didn't get single chance in odi and failure rohit sharma getting chances after chances.
jj_28 Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Criticizing a player is easy and least productive, that's why neither Gambhir or other players will ever do that Rohit needs help from inside and maybe outside, Rohit had his chance and failed at it now its Tiwary's turn to prove himself
Crookbond Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Everyone comes up with this 78 not out to show how talented he is ignoring series of failures surrounding his 79*. One innings in a hopeless situation where Dhoni later mentioned pitch eased out later. The video i showed had plenty of short balls too where Yuvraj hit. Occasionally he gets surprised. How often Yuvraj actually got out to bouncers as against Rohit. Raina struggles against bouncers too. Ganguly does too. It is not like Rohit has 100% record against bouncers. He got worked over at Lords slope too. Edwards to RG Sharma, OUT, Undaunted by the pulled four, Fidel simply cranks up another short-pitched delivery from back of length.. Rohit is beaten for the pace and by the extra bounce, top edges the pull to square leg. Great start from Windies. Taylor served up a fiery first over and now, Fidel has started in a similar vein. Yuvraj was the one who made 67 in that match Are you comparing a game from 2009 to a game in 2012?
velu Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 UV is one of the best pullers in our side ..

Because it could very well come back and bite them. Not just Gambhir. But for fans they are all the same. It is not like Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni, escaped critics let alone Rohit.

Ultimate_Game Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 bringing in t20 ? :yikes: brah plz stay away form umar khatmal threads Those matches may be T20s but the bowling was high quality and the pitch gree, seaming and with bounce. Batting and scoring runs on those pitches were not easy. We had slumped to 40/4 and 45/7 on those tracks and none of our batsmen could do much on those pitches other than Rohit. This is just an illustration of how he can handle tougher conditions and good bowling attack, nothing more.

He looks like someone who would actually do well in Tests but his languid style hasn't been suitable for the shorter version till now.

Rohit would be more suited to longer format where he doesn't have the pressure to score off every ball. His stats say the same with an average of 35 in List A and an average of 60 in FC. Clearly he's more suited to Tests than odis.

Actually T20 is where he does well where you have more pressure to score off every ball than in other format. When he gets too much time he doesn't know how to construct an innings like Kohli.
