Ultimate_Game Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Mandeep @ 20 is already a better players than Dhawan and Vijay put together . His technique is better than any other Indian youngster ' date=' better than Rohit , Rahane , Thiwary , Raina , Pujara etc . I would only pick Virat ahead of him for the test team , though spending a season or 2 in Domestic cant relly do any harm to him .[/quote'] I wouldn't call his technique better than Pujara, Rahane, Rohit, Tiwary and even Raina just yet. Playing at intl level is not about technique or how good one looks playing a shot. It's more about putting an innings together consistently. Attractive 20s & 30s are not of much use and by that account even Imran Nazir has a great technique. Mandeep has to learn how to be consistent and learn to play big innings at domestic level. He shouldn't get into the Indian team before he does that.
jusarrived Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 mandeep had good enough technique for odis thing is no one has perfect technique not even kohli or pujara just play well within ur limitations and u will do fine I would pick a few other players ahead of him for ODI's . Hes more in GG & Virat mould . Unless these two are missing , i see no reason to pick him . Pujara's technique isnt that great . Everything is relative , Dravids techni9ques isnt perfect either . Mandeep is up there with the best .

jusarrived Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 He looks good but I feel that's big exaggeration. :omg: He will be our best bat in 3-5 years , subject to hes given a run of 6-8 matches at some point .

For a top order batsman these are not ood numbers. He has to perform at domestic level before he can get into the Indian team. Indian team should not be a place where batsmen, or bowlers for that matter, come to learn how to build long innings or to learn how to bowl consistently. These skills should be built over time in domestic and A cricket. I expect Chand and Mandeep to be in the Indian team sometime later, maybe one or both of them will be in the scheme of things for the WC as well, but at this point they are not there yet. But IMO Mandeep would be a better bet than Rahane. Mandeep is a naturally aggressive batsman in the mould of Yuvraj and should do well but he still needs at least 1 or 2 domestic seasons under his belt and should be a regular in the A team. One option is for these players to be played against the likes of B'desh, Zim and NZ when we play odi series against these sides. I would rest all the established players and then have the likes of Rahane, Pujara, Mandeep, Tiwary, Chand, Rohit etc. play the series. No point playing our established players in odis against these sides.

Somehow Rahane thows his wkt cheaply far too often. I expected him to be like Cook, i.e. score heavily once he gets in but he doesn't know how to score consistently in odis, and his List A stats says the same. He should get chances at the top of the order for India but IMO he's more a Test prospect than a shorter format one.

You can't have Rahane, Gambhir & Kohli as your top 3 as you need one dasher at the top to lift the run-rate. One of the reasons India flopped in the last 2 World T20s was we didn't have Sehwag at the top who could take the bowlers apart and give a good start to our innings. Another minus against Rahane is that he struggles to pick up RR even after being set. I mean look at Kohli. Once he's set he can accelerate. With Rahane if he doesn't have a quick start he can't score that quickly and pick up his RR. IMO this is one of the reasons Rahane is not able to play long innings. He either has to go for shots early coz he knows he can't compensate for his slower start later on, or he perishes trying to accelerate later which he's not good at.

I do recall Rahane struggling to get the ball off square in IPL against Morkel whenhe was set at the death. Rahane doesn't know how to pick up the RR and it was clear to see the same when you watch any of his innings where he did get in. At least that's the impression I got.

Old guy Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 and abt morkel even tendulkar struggles against him now is he jsut accumulator some one like sehwag wont even survive against him like is said have some prespective i havent seen kohli smack morkel too :dontknow:
Ultimate_Game Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 and abt morkel even tendulkar struggles against him now is he jsut accumulator some one like sehwag wont even survive against him like is said have some prespective i havent seen kohli smack morkel too :dontknow: It's not about smacking a bowler but to make it count when set. Kohli starts slowly, is around 50 off 60 something deliveries and when he's done is better at run a ball without taking risks. This is something I have seen missing in Rahane - inability to increase the tempo without taking undue risk which a good batsman should be able to do. As for Kohli and Morkel, if Kohli is well set and batting at the death, I would back him to score off against morkel.

Sehwag scores 1 out of 10 matches which makes our team highly dependent on another opener and #3 which will never be good for the team if your second opener scores rarely. he may score quickly but whats the benefit when he is an Eid ka chand in terms of runs. I will be happy to have another opener like Gambhir in ODIs who is more consistent and even without being too flashy still can score at 80 plus SR.

Old guy Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 and please.. just in some corner of ur mind keep this thought that next world cup is in australia we will love to have a solid opener then.. but w/o practice and playing in odis now we wont have one!

Sehwag may make a big score once every series but Sehwag's quick 20s and 30s are more than useful. Take his WC semi final knock against Pakis. He only ended up scoring 30 odd but that innings made the difference. His quick 20s & 30s kick-start the innings and give us an impetus which our middle order batsmen are able to cash in on. In T20s this start would be even more useful. We need to find a similarly aggresiive opener at the top coz those days of 5 overs and the score of 9/0 is no longer an option.
