Normal life was paralysed in Assam by a 12-hour bandh called by the Bajrang Dal to protest the violence in the lower Assam districts where the situation was calm with no fresh incident reported today. Bandh supporters burnt tyres and pelted stones at vehicles in different parts of the state following which the police took nearly 500 of them into preventive custody in Guwahati, Golokgunj and Agomoni in Dhubri, official sources said. Schools, colleges and educational institutions, commercial and business establishments, financial institutions remained closed with attendance in government offices thin, the sources said. Vehicles remained off the roads with a few state transport buses running with police escorts. Bandh supporters were also taken into preventive custody near the North East Frontier Railway at Maligaon here when they stopped railway employees from reporting for duty, the sources said. Rail and air services, however, remained unaffected. The bandh was supported by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and RSS. There was no fresh incident of violence in lower Assam districts since last evening where seven people have died and two others injured since Friday taking the toll in the more than month-long violence to 87. I wonder if we should catch all such extremists and put them in one state and call it Extremistan. LEt them fight, throw stones, shag on each other or do whatever they want to. The poor moderates in this whole episode are becoming 'chutney'. :headshake:

I dunno what do the political parties earn from these bands ...it does adds trouble to commoners and nothing else.

That is their specialty....they never put themselves at risk when the real stuff is going on.They wait for things to become 'safe' before they risk stirring things again.

Fresh incidents of violence were reported in strife-torn Kokrajhar district as a statewide bandh, called by the All Assam Minority Students' Union, disrupted normal life in Assam on Tuesday. Unidentified persons lobbed grenades, torched several houses and engaged security forces in a shoot out at Pakritala village in Fakiragram and Choukhati village in Salakati last night. The Army was patrolling the disturbed areas and security has been further tightened in BTAD districts following the incidents with night curfew continuing in Kokrajhar, Chirand and Dhubri. Normal life was paralysed with sporadic incidents of violence in several districts during the 12-hour bandh called demanding scrapping of the Bodoland Territorial Council and the arrest of its chief Hagrama Mohilary. The police opened fire to disperse bandh supporters, who blocked NH-31 at Joghighopa in Bongaigaon district and three bandh supporters were injured. High tension prevails in Dhubri district with the CRPF and the police opening fire to disperse bandh supporters, who burnt the effigy of Mohilary near No:2 Kali Mandir on NH 31 at Gauripur. Bandh supporters also blocked NH-31 at New Hatipota near Bilasipara, ransacked the Bodoland Peoples' Front office in Gauripur as well as eight shops at Asharkandi besides forcibly closing shops at Gariapatti. The bandh was total in Mankachar and South Salmara areas bordering Bangladesh. In Sonitpur, bandh activists attacked the car of the Tezpur Circle Officer, Sarangapani Sarma, and officer-in-charge of Bhojkhowa police station at Bhojkhowa and damaged it. Sporadic incidents of violence have also been reported from Barpeta, Morigaon, Nagaon and Sibsagar. Kokrajhar was, however, free from bandh-related violence.

Hopefully, these people keeps on fighting among themselves (and its ends soon) and does not spread to the rest of Assam or India. The two bandhs have been affective to some extent and so, it seems it might spread to rest of Assam in the future it the trend continues. Hopefully, it does not as Upper Assam (Assamese speaking stronghold) is known to be by and large peaceful in terms of religious problems.

Another bandh in line too soon for the whole of north east this time with NESO (North East Students Union) bandh on September 6.

The influential North East Students Organisation, an amalgamation of main students' bodies of all the seven northeastern states has called for a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh in six states -- Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya -- from the 5 am on September 6 next, will hold a public rally at Guwahati in Assam on the issue of recent exodus of NE people from outside states and presence of illegal foreigners in the region. NESO chairman Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya said that the organisation felt that the twin issues needed be highlighted loudly have led to unrest in the region that is already plagued with many problems. "When the six states observe the bandh, we will hold a massive meeting and take out a procession in Guwahati, the gateway to NE. In order to facilitate people's participation in the rally, we have not called the bandh in Assam," the NESO leader said. The NESO is inviting representatives of governments of Maharashtra [ Images ], Karnataka [ Images ], Andhra Pradesh and all seven NE states and also the members of NE MPs' Forum to the meeting to be held on September 6 in Guwahati. The NESO has recommended for setting up of nodal agency in all the States that witness mass exodus of panic-gripped NE people to coordinate safe return of the NE people who had fled those states leaving behind their jobs and study. The NESO has decided to form NE people and students welfare coordination committee at its own initiative in those states for the benefit of the N-E people and students residing there. The NESO has expressed its gratitude to the people and governments of the affected states as well as members of both Houses of Parliament for showing their concern over the exodus NE people and standing by the people of the region. On the issue of illegal migrants, Dr Bhattacharyya said the NESO was firm on its demand before the governments that all illegal people must leave the state and country. He also demanded that the government must ensure that no illegal migrants are rehabilitated in the riots-hit areas of western Assam. The NESO demands that the Central government should facilitate a meeting of the chief ministers of all the northeastern states to work out a coordination to respond to the threat posed by the unabated illegal migration from Bangladesh to the region. The NESO demanded immediate steps from the government of India [ Images ] to detect and deport all the illegal migrants especially those coming from Bangladesh and also those Bangladeshis who have gone untraced after entering the country with valid documents.
