I don't see the point of argument either, there is no denying he was the greatest cricketer ever from India. But his retirement is not far. He has already said he will review his performance after this series, so this series he is not going anywhere.

Every single Indian fan, in my humble opinion, ranks Sunny Gavaskar, SRT and Kapil Dev as the greatest 3 players of India of all times. Only the rankings are different. In my opinion, Sachin should have retired a few years back even (2008). I am not gonna pile on him since it has been done and dusted by now. You can differ on this of course :winky: Why in 2008? He had a good couple of years, was the highest averaging player when India rose to no1, was a part of the world cup winning team (not to forget him bailing us out against Pak in WC semis). Who wouldnt want all that to his name? Well he should retire now for sure

He'll be well past 40 at that point, which would be a good 3-5 years past the typical retirement age. Even if Sachin returns to form and has a spectacular run (which is unlikely at this age, but i would not totally rule that out), he will at the most be around for two series (Ind vs Aus at home, Ind vs SAF away) to pay us back. I dont think we have a good enough team to win the away series in SAF - with much better teams, in better form, we could not manage that in the past. So the benefit of backing Sachin, is mainly realizable in the Ind-Aus series. But that's hardly a case for continuing to invest in an old man who looks done. First of all, beating Australia at home is not such a unique achievement and second, youngsters (such as Rahane) are likely to perform well at home & offer us a worthy replacement. In other words, the upside for investing in this old man is just too little to be worth it. And that too when the upside is not even guaranteed. All said & done, i personally believe he is playing because he feels insecure about his records given Kallis's brilliant form. So SRT will never offer to retire on his own. He should be pushed out, after all, he is playing for the wrong reasons.
