New Delhi: MS Dhoni reportedly requested Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan to sit out of India's World Twenty20 match against England to test the team's bench strength, but if reports are to be believed, it hasn't gone down too well with Sehwag. As reported by Firstpost.com, Sehwag is showing signs of being annoyed at his omission by distancing himself from the team. "After warming-up with the team, he [sehwag] sat in the last row of the team tent at the Colts Cricket Club in Colombo. He didn't move, he did not put on the pads either and was virtually a spectator for most part," a report on Firstpost said. Leading up to the England game, Dhoni had confirmed that there are no injury issues with Sehwag, so that is unlikely to be the cause for him giving the nets a miss, Firstpost reported. Plus, he isn't anywhere near his top form of late, which makes his decision to miss practice even more questionable. Irfan Pathan was pushed up as an opener against England in the absence of Sehwag, with skipper MS Dhoni saying that the allrounder's efficiency to play the horizontal-bat shots helped India counter England's tactics to bounce India out. India play Australia on the Sept 28, Pakistan on Sept 30 and South Africa on Oct 2, all teams that are capable to dig it in short and trouble India. And if Dhoni's reasoning to open with Pathan is anything to go by, Sehwag may have to sit out for at least India's first Super Eights encounter. Opening with Irfan also lends more balance to the India's line-up and allows Dhoni to play five bowlers without giving up a batting option in the middle order. However, it has to be admitted that an in-form Virender Sehwag would be the first name to be ticked on the team sheet, especially for big matches. But it seems his state of mind is causing him to lose focus and thereby a place in the team.

more than the batting skills, sehwag needs to work on shot selection n fitness... does anyone remember his run out against SL in ODI series in july..... was batting beautifully till then... but could not turn back quickly after backing up a bit..... zaheer maybe has to work on both fitness n bowling skills (yorkers, slower ones, short ones, slower short ones)

sehwag has been consistent troublemaker for quite some time now. he needs to be really dropped for some time now for discipline reasons. seriously show some balls BCCI and set examples for the youngsters. on one hand you have guys like Kohli who are fighting so hard to win and then what will they think when they see Prima donnas like sehwag. I would say make UV open and show Sehwag that a Guy recovering from cancer has more guts and fight in him to play for the country. In fact Yuvraj was tipped to be one to be the captain around 2007 when Dhoni was chosen. Yuvraj must have felt slighted but publicly and in the field he has always supported dhoni 100%.

^ It has happened earlier. He was dropped from the vice-captaincy for disciplinary reasons. He was also dropped from a tour - don't remember which one for similar reasons too. As I said earlier, I must credit MS Dhoni and the team management for carrying around such individuals & trying to get the best out of them despite the players not being interested.

All I said was Sehwag has had disciplinary problems in the past - case in point when he was stripped of vice-captaincy during India's tour to SA and subsequently "rested". It also raises an issue when Sehwag's name comes up every time when there is a team rift. There is no way for anyone of us to know what happened exactly but raises a red flag for sure, at least for me.

Personally for me, there is enough proof to incriminate Sehwag as not the perfect man in the team & he does have tendencies to throw tantrums. His name just crops up every time there is an incidence of infighting reported - T20 WC 2009, Australia 2011 and T20 WC 2012. He comes to me across the common denominator. Kudos to the captain and the team management for bearing with him all throughout. This is not to question his place in the team - that is a different discussion altogether.
