Ranvir Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 I've noticed that over the last few years more and more players of Indian origin are playing for the West Indies team, I know that Indians have been there for a very long time, 100+ years, does anyone know whereabouts from India most of these guys originate from? I'm guessing Bengal given the way they spell names like Rampal and Chanderpal as Rampaul and Chanderpaul (a is pronounced as au in Bengali), or are they from various areas?

For many carribean islands Bhojpuri is a recognized language that would lead to the fact that most of the them are related to Bhojpuri's and hence Biharis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribbean_Hindustani This article also shows link between Carribean Indians and Bhojpuri.

It's good to see that they still follow their Indian culture even after all of these years and share traits like awful fielding, fine batting and spin bowling. Although Rampaul almost bucks the trend with decent pace at times!

Ram Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 There have been quite a few Windies players' names that bear close resemblance to Tamizh names - mahendra nagamootoo (நாகமுத்து/ Nagamuthu), or Ramnaresh Sarwan (சரவணன்/Saravanan) or even the newbie, Samuel Badree (பத்ரி/Badri).
