Reports Day one Jharkhand v Punjab, Ranji Trophy Quarter-final, 1st day Nemat, Jaggi keep Punjab at bay The Report by Amol Karhadkar in Jamshedpur January 6, 2013 Jharkhand 195 for 3 (Nemat 97*, Jaggi 50*) v Punjab Scorecard Chilly weather combined with a flat track often makes for slow, and sometimes dull, cricket. It was evident at the Keenan Stadium as Jharkhand cruised to 195 for three on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against the favourites Punjab. It wasn't the most ideal surface for a knockout game, but you might want to give the ground staff some allowance for adverse weather conditions affecting preparation of the pitch. However, it was a no-brainer that the team winning the toss would opt to bat and try to put up a big score on board, especially with the match being a five-day affair. Despite poor visibility delaying the start of the match by half an hour, Jharkhand had no doubts whatsoever in choosing to bat. The slowish and dry nature of the pitch had forced Punjab, who have preferred to go in with three seam bowlers, to play two specialist spinners at the cost of a pace bowler. And they preferred to bench Sandeep Sharma, their leading wicket-taker of the season. Sandeep was not only nursing a niggle on his shoulder, but also was recovering from a twisted ankle. Even if he was fully fit, he might have still made way for legspinner Sarabjit Ladda, as Punjab coach Arun Sharma admitted. The legspinner outperformed his captain Harbhajan Singh by a distance. Had Ladda not got carried away after picking two wickets in quick succession after lunch, Punjab would have snatched the advantage from the home team. Instead, opener Rameez Nemat and the talented Ishank Jaggi managed to rescue Jharkhand from 97 for 3 and end the day with their noses slightly ahead. Only 74 overs were bowled as bad light stopped play early. Nemat, who starred in Jharkhand's victory against Services last week that secured them a place in the quarters, was solid in defence. Though he is not technically as sound as an opener should be, he curbed his naturally aggressive instincts and respected good balls. It resulted in his being on the verge of a maiden first-class century. And had bad light not played its part, Nemat would have been celebrating the milestone instead of the prospects of sleepless night. While Nemat focused on rotating the strike, Jaggi showcased enterprise. While he cut both the spinners at will, his standout stroke was a back-foot flick against the spin of Ladda, which raced to the midwicket boundary. Jaggi, who was part of Jharkhand's victorious campaign in the Vijay Hazare Trophy - domestic one-day competition - two years ago, put Nemat at ease after Manish Vardhan and mainstay Saurabh Tiwary had perished in quick succession. Earlier in the morning, Siddarth Kaul struck early for Punjab as he trapped Akash Verma plumb in front of the wicket off the last ball of the fourth over. After, Nemat, who moved to Jharkhand after representing Delhi in under-14 cricket, and Vardhan kept the Punjab bowlers at bay till lunch. While a decent Jamshedpur crowd had turned up to primarily watch Harbhajan, they were entertained by the batting duo's occasional stroke-making. The day didn't bring Harbhajan much joy. Punjab coach, Arun Sharma, said: "We let them off the hook after those two wickets post lunch. We should have at least picked five wickets and shouldn't have let them score almost 200 runs. After all, the favourites, no matter how formidable, are only as good as they bat, bowl and fields on a given day. On Sunday, Services were better than Uttar Pradesh on all three counts, and ended the first day of their Ranji Trophy quarter-final with a small lead and five wickets in hand, something hardly any outsider could have predicted at the start. Unlike UP, the Holkar Stadium pitch did justice to its reputation. This was the only quarter-final where the side winning the toss chose to field, and the reason was quite clear. The pitch was green, there was sharp bounce in the morning, even from a good length, and there was seam movement. The three Services fast bowlers, Suraj Yadav, Nishan Singh and Shadab Nazar were eager and persevering, and a shell-shocked UP went to lunch at 76 for 7, which turned to 76 for 8 in the first over after the break. Fast bowler Imtiaz Ahmed's manic hitting brought 58 for the final two wickets and UP's highest wicket-taker of the season then reduced Services to 97 for 5 before youngster Rajat Paliwal and the veteran wicketkeeper Sarabjit Singh carried Services into ascendency. The UP openers Tanmay Srivastava and Mukul Dagar had batted quite safely for close to 50 deliveries in the morning and though they had been tested, there was no indication of the wicket deluge that was to come. In his fourth over, Nishan got one to kick at and move away from Dagar, who could only edge it to the wicketkeeper. Mohammad Kaif, who survived a couple of lbw appeals padding up outside off stump, was slightly late in getting forward as Nishan bent one back in. That was enough to trap him in front given the zip in the surface. Nazar, in his debut season, and bowling with an energetic run-up, brought one back to hit the promoted keeper Eklavya Dwivedi high on the pad, and the appeal was upheld. Parvinder Singh and Arish Alam also became Nazar's victims. Parvinder cut to gully for a sharp take, and Alam steering tamely to second slip. The attacking approach wasn't out of place on this pitch, as all the defending wasn't enough to save you when the really good delivery arrived, or when your patience failed you. Srivastava, after facing 71 deliveries cautiously, pushed outside off stump to Yadav and was caught behind. From 50 for 6, UP reached 134 through all-out attack from Piyush Chawla and Imtiaz. Chawla swung Yadav over extra cover, check-drove him down the ground and smashed him past mid-off in the same over. Off what was to be the final delivery of the morning session, though, he thick-edged a swipe to first slip off Nishan. Imtiaz's assault stunned Services after the break as it rained six after six. At one stage, Services had seven men in the deep against the last pair of Imtiaz and Sudeep Tyagi. Imtiaz was even caught on the long-off boundary, but the fielder stepped onto the rope. He was soon raising his bat to the dressing room for his maiden first-class fifty off just 31 deliveries, but the fun ended when Tyagi edged a flail to the keeper off Yadav. Services might not have cared much for it, but UP had their reputation to protect, and came hard with the new ball. Services were in no mood to let up. The opening pair of Nakul Verma and Anshul Gupta, both in their debut seasons, began positively to add 43 in 12 overs. UP also dropped both batsmen. Keeper Dwivedi dived in front of Kaif at first slip the first time, and Chawla the culprit in the slips in the second instance. Imtiaz did it all by himself to earn the breakthrough, angling one in to catch Gupta in front. Kaif snapped a low catch at first slip off Verma's outside edge, and pointed to the dressing room as if to say that was how you took them. Avishek Sinha and Soumya Swain chopped shortish deliveries onto their stumps, and Yashpal edged a lifting Imtiaz length ball to the keeper. UP were close to making it an even day, but Paliwal and Sarabjit calmed Services nerves. Their cover-driving was a treat to watch, as they stepped forward with confidence and hit the gaps repeatedly. Unless Services can build a huge lead, going past UP's 134 might not be of much consequence in this five-day match, but they can look back at day one and proudly march off to their barracks. ---- Services v UP, Ranji Trophy Quarter-final, 1st day Shadab Nazar routs his home state Abhishek Purohit in Indore January 6, 2013 "We don't want star players. We want performers," Wing commander Deepak Bhaskar, the Services manager, had said before the start of their quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh, when asked about the big-name players in the opposition. Performance was what he got from his players on day one. Leading them was fast bowler Shadab Nazar, a corporal in the Air Force, who routed UP for 134 on the way to his third five-for in his debut first-class season. Nazar, 25, ironically hails from UP and played age-group cricket for the state. He was part of the same sports hostel set-up in Lucknow where Suresh Raina and RP Singh come from, before he was recruited by Bhaskar into the Air Force. Today, he showed no mercy to his former state-mates as he bustled in with a run-up full of energy and found generous bounce from the Holkar Stadium pitch to claim 5 for 51. Nazar's been with Services for six years now, but broke into their first-class side only this season, though he played a couple of one-dayers in early 2010. He's already become a potent part of the side's fast-bowling attack, along with Suraj Yadav and Nishan Singh, and has played all their nine games so far in the season to pick up 30 wickets at an average of 23.56. "It doesn't matter how big the batsman's reputation is. In the end, it is all about putting the ball in the right areas," Nazar said. He added more zip to the Services attack as soon as he was introduced first change and dismissed three of the top six UP batsmen. "My approach was to just keep it on a tight length," he said. Nazar felt the pitch had eased out slightly after the morning session in which UP lost seven wickets but it was still not easy for the batsmen. Bhaskar said the deliveries that zipped through had decreased in number but were still enough of a threat. The UP attack has delivered four outright wins in the season and it was quite an achievement for Services to earn a lead of 20 runs by stumps with five wickets in hand. Even more so, considering they had to redo their batting order following the unavailability of the captain Soumik Chatterjee, who hurt his knee while fielding in the deep. Chatterjee was taken for an MRI scan, the results of which were awaited. The seriousness of his injury was evident when, unable to walk, he was carried from the dressing room to the team bus by his team-mates. What part, if any, Chatterjee will be able to play in the remainder of the match was unclear but for a determined Services side, it is just one of the several odds they have to tackle.

Only 21 years old and totally unknown, this 100 on a difficult track against a very good UP bowling line up could pitchfork him into the limelight.
