The price of one plate of medu wada has been raised by Rs 5 to Rs 17, while a plate of idli costs Rs 13 up from Rs 10. Sandwiches are availableat Rs 19 up from Rs 12. I'm with you in government helping out the poor, but the subsidies should target the poor. Petrol and train fare and farm subsidies goes mainly to rich and upper middle class - poor don't have enough money to buy a car, travel or land.

It's those who drink the tap water.

That is truest form of subsidy. All other ones are merely short sighted and do nothing for the poor. One just needs to look at the recent MNREGA circular on construction of worker toilets to understand that the government (Congress, BJP all the idiots) do not want to empower the poor but want to take advantage of the vote bank.

The Guidelines for National Rural Employment Gandhi Act (NREGA) 2005 quotes that for "WORKS RELATING TO ACCESS TO SANITATION FACILITIES" - No contractor and machine will be deployed for construction of toilet units. because it creates unemployment. It reminisces me of this narrative - "While touring China, he came upon a team of nearly 100 workers building an earthen dam with shovels. The businessman commented to a local official that, with an earth-moving machine, a single worker could create the dam in an afternoon. The officialÃÔ curious response was, źes, but think of all the unemployment that would create. Å°h, said the businessman, Ū thought you were building a dam.
