i think it ought to be other way around... he is a tor de force when it comes to ODIs... him retiring from ODIs is counterintutive; its the test matches where he is a bit of a stragler.

he shouldn't quit. if anything he should stop playing useless series (sa/ind series in ire; not playing the banga odi series, etc).

This can be a good thing. All these ODIs mean little really, what really matters is the world cups. Do you guys seriously think that Tendulkar can play in the next world cup if he kept playing both ODIs and Tests ? Hell no- he'd be gone in another 2 yrs max, given that his body is not what it used to be. This way, maybe Tendulkar can finally concentrate on Test cricket, rectify his record there a bit ( he should be doing a damn sight better than 54 average and 37 tons) and maybe, if all is still well, make a brief ODI comeback in late 2009- I am sure if Tendy is still playing good cricket in 2 years from now, he could still make a short one-and-half year comeback to the ODIs and be damn good.

this isnt a shabby idea ... although if in the meanwhile we find a highly competent replacement ... it will become diff to displace that player.

:cry_smile::cry_smile:........sorry...but I am not sure if I will be able to enjoy, heck even imagine Indian Cricket without Sachu:confused_smile: If I can meet him, I will tell him that he can take some rest or play only few imprtant tournament...but don't stopp it completely. I want our Next generation Indians grow-up watching Sachin...in absence of him, whom as example we can produce??...terrible thought.:sad_smile::sad_smile:

That is ridiculous. He should be rotated in ODI until a proper replacement is found (Motu no good - Utthapa still learning the ropes - Gambhir - not good enough). It will be a sad day when SRT goes frm cricket. I grew up with him/SRG/RD & I will probably lose interest in cricket once these greats retire. :confused_smile:

Whilst it's a pragmatic move, I am heartbroken. To imagine that the sight of the diminutive figure in Indian colours, with the Indian Flag planted proudly on his helmet marching out shadow batting as he makes his way to the wicket, looking up to the heavens to thank god and his dad for giving him the opportunity to play for India, will no longer be witnessed in the near future is hard to take. Yes, it will be strange seeing an Indian team without him. A bit like how the old f@rts must have felt when Gavaskar retired - the absence of a stocky figure wearing a funny looking sun-hat was conspicuous. My most memorable moments of Indian cricket are of the runs scored off his MRF (and that plain bat he used earlier on). My interest in the sport might dwindle a bit once he calls it quits.
