The accused apparently planned to kill the girl after throwing her out by running her over and make it all look like a hit and run case. The male friend of the girl pulled her away at the last minute. Shocking. And apparently, it was the minor who was trying to run her over. At that age he isn't even entitled to have a driving license.

Is all this in the aftermath of this particular incident, or do you generally take so many precautions? Over here, in Mumbai, you would rarely find a girl who carries pepper spray. I just have a small swiss army knife as a cupboard key-chain, which I don't even carry everywhere. I've learned some Karate though, and was moderately good at it.

And this was widespread practice, the religious spectrum. What 'forced' are you on about? Some such cases are still reported from Rajasthan. Also there are cases where old Arabs from the oil rich nations marry of very young Muslim girls from Hyderbad, for a few days. A practice, which is nothing short of rape. Long time ago, people even used to marry young girl children on their deathbed. There was a belief that marrying a Bramhin would get the girl Moksha. Bramhins didn't usually like to marry too many girls but the best looking of the villages. However, they would be worried about the afterlife when they got old and marrying young girls of lower castes was considered a way to instant "punya". So some Bramhins would agree to marry young girl children of low caste on their deathbeds in a last attempt at some good deed that can be used in afterlife. There would be a que of girls and a purohit would sit and conduct quick marriages one after another. It can be done as long as the man is breathing. Most of such girls would then live a widow's life. AFAIK, it was a practice in Bengal long back.

They may not be any good in absolute terms because of under-reporting but might give a hint about whether things have been getting better or worse compared to past years/decades. The only thing I've found is this which doesn't say whether its the number of reports or convictions. ps: That table is a load of shite for comparing across countries.

The UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, has urged the Indian government to take action to protect women. Just another indicator how poor womens' safety is in India. Also interesting article in WSJ here: Are Women Safer in India or the U.S.?. It's suggested from experience that only 1 in 10 rape incidents in India are reported compared to 1 in 2 in the US. This indicates a very grave problem in India, especially regarding the number of cases not reported.

Lot of Our people in power care more about foreign media than public out cry. I am kinda surprised that no one is calling for Sheila Dixit head or questioning Congress inability to do anything for years. Sheila Dixit has been making one excuse after another but not accepted the failure of her government to protect women in Delhi.

I don't think it affects Congis one bit. Congress will win how that they have always won. Keep the people poor. Promise them goodies at the time of election. Then Loot the country when in power. Delhi rape: juvenile raped woman twice and ripped off her intestine The law may bestow leniency on him but according to the Delhi Police, the juvenile associate of the men who executed the gangrape of December 16 was the most brutal of them all. According to the chargesheet, the juvenile had subjected the 23-year-old physiotherapist to sexual abuse twice, once when she was unconscious. He extracted her intestine with his bare hands and suggested she be thrown off the moving vehicle devoid of her clothes, it says. The police, who are yet to receive the report of his bone ossification test and are treating him as a juvenile on the basis of his school leaving certificate, are supposed to file its chargesheet on Thursday. The police have also obtained the initial postmortem report from Singapore. "Of all the persons in the bus, two had engaged in the most barbarism — Ram Singh, the main accused in the case, and the juvenile," said an officer. "Both of them had subjected her to sexual abuse twice. Singh was the first to rape her followed by the juvenile and then Akshay. Later, when she lost consciousness, Singh and the juvenile raped her a second time." Nabbed from the Anand Vihar ISBT on December 28 and six months shy of officially turning an adult, the juvenile had moved to the city in 2007. That day, police said, the juvenile had landed at Singh's Ravi Das slum cluster home to demand R8,000 the former owed him. Here, he met the rest of the men. Around 9.30 pm, he used his peculiar 'sing-song' whistle to lure the couple aboard the bus. The vehicle started moving on a different route, making the victim's companion apprehensive. They shut the only functional door of the bus. "When the victim's companion objected, Singh passed a lewd comment which triggered an altercation," the officer said.
