So can the hundreds and 50s. I am not a Murali Vijay for opener's position guy but ostracizing Vijay for "that NO ball" is purely Najafgarh Logic. There are much better reasons for not choosing Murali Vijay.

India has several problems. Opening will not be a problem as long as Gauti and Viru are there. Yes they haven't done well abroad. But they are the best we have by country mile. Rest are pretenders. It is middle order that is going to give us lot of headache. There will be scenarios where INdia could be 100 for 0 and get bowled out for 150.

I think Kohli, Pujara, Rohit will make for a decent middle order. They need exposure at the highest level and they will get better. Especially in India, they wont be pushovers. Rahane is there too who has done well on A tours in the past and likes of Mandeep Singh, Suryakumar Yadav will also step up to the plate.

Only those openers can be called a success. How many such successful openers have we produced in 75+ years?

if they counted every ball sachin played precisely then i am sure he would have had a stirke rate of 60.5 or higher, but alas not to be so.

Mukund and Dhawan- No wy Rahane- Maybe, should try him a few times. Viru and Gauti will do for now.

Someone like chand will be a good option in future for limited overs.Gauti is a very good opener he has age in his hands.we have to find a player to replace viru at the top if he wishes to move himself to middle order.Rahane deserves lot more opportunities in future

Exploring the new test openers We must need to start looking out for new test openers as well. I think one of Viru or GG can be easily shifted in the middle order or even dropped as they have been too inconsistent have lost the temperament to survive in foreign conditions. We need to look for certain virtues in a test opener overseas. Batsmen who are patient enough to bide their time when the ball is new and doing things and left hte ball get old like Alistair Cook, Alviro Peterson, or Cowan etc plays. Sunil Gavaskar, Geoff Boycott played with same approach. Second approach is which Sehwag, Warner and Gayle deals in, but this approach is always going to be hot and cold and then depends on the natural game of a player. What do you think is the right approach? We should also look at the options we have. Abhinav Mukund who has already played a few tests and failed though looked gritty but seemed to have technical issues. Murli Vijay who is the reserve opener but he has been very vulnerbable and does not give enough confidence against pacers. Ajinkay Rahane was an opener initally but then shifted to middle order at #3 according to the team's need. Other than that this domestic season has also produced some debutant and young openers who have done well. Jiwanjot Singh has started miraculously and has played most of his innings on tracks which have a lot for the seamers, facing new ball is never easy in North India at this time of the year. He is an old fashioned opener who waits and waits and tries to bat for long time. He might be our next test opener in making if he continues his run making. He is the highest run getter in ranji trophy till now with 508 runs at an average of 102 odd and that is commendable for an openers who has batted mostly in seam friendly conditions and whose teams seamers are destryoing oppostions in those conditions match after match. Mukul Dagar and Akshath Reddy have also impressed as openers and both have also performed credibly well in tough conditions. So there are three genuine rookie openers to keep an eye on right now. Jiwanjot, Mukul Dagar, and Akshtah Reddy for future A team matches. As Gambhir and Sehwag are sliding down, we need new candidate for opening slots. Prashant Chopra has also done decently well in conditions given while opening with one 100 and one 50 in 4 matches, struggeled a little but his game is pretty suited to longer format. Unmukt too has struggled a little to start and it looks he will need to play few more FC seasons to adjust his game to longer format of the game. He too has scored one 100 and one 50 in 4 matches.
