If the new bowler does well, he will be a new wicket taking option for the team. Opportunities should be given to people who have done well consistently or have had an exceptional season, and then they should be given a run before discarding them. This random picking and dropping will not help anyone.

The problem is spotting good bowling talent. Someone could have the qualities of being a good bowler but could be ineffective sometimes on flat pitches in India. The selectors should have the ability to spot a talent irrespective of how many games he has played and draft him in the side when India tours SA, Aus or Eng and when they play in helpful conditions. Selectors have picked Dinda, Vinay Kumar, Abhimanyu Mithun, Unadkat in tests in the past who have looked nowhere close to being effective in picking wickets. It means they dont know what they are doing.

^ Unadkat was random and picked far too young (based on effectively one good match vs WI A in England) but the rest were picked on FC successes all topped the wicket takers charts, in Vinays case more than once. Pankaj Singh has done the same What else can selectors do? Not exactly flooded with pace talent in the FC scene...this season a few pacemen have broken through on paper but as Saurav says they need to show consistency over a period of time and also- more importantly- do well on A tours. There needs to be a system to get them readier for international cricket. In the past bowlers have been blooded far too early- IMO this has been the issue with Irfan, Ishant, Rudra...give them some time to learn their craft in FC, though on the other hand were so starved of good pacemen need to grab em whenever.

See, a lot of times these are the best talents that are available around who are fit and are in form too. In India, pace bowlers are selected and given bigger opportunities quite quickly - I'll give you a few examples - last year, Shami Ahmed was picked for Duleep Trophy after playing only one season for Bengal in which he did okay. He wasn't a direct selection though, he got into the team after Abu Nechim got injured. He did well in that Duleep Trophy match, and was directly fast-tracked to the India A team for the next two foreign tours. And this year, after doing well in the domestics and the A-tour, he has been drafted into the ODI squad of the India team. He has only played 15 FC matches till now Take the case of Ishwar Pandey. He has come to the limelight now only after taking 48 wickets in 8 matches and has been straight drafted into the A team playing against England. Now what they'll do with their opportunities is for everyone to see.

Take it in this way - For the first time in his life, he's getting an opportunity to bowl at some world-class batsmen. He'll learn from this opportunity and will get a taste of international cricket in a way. It's just a tour game anyway, 'failures' are never judged here. Only success is.
