BCCI secy Jagdale patiently explains India's fall from grace

After the ODI series defeat against Pakistan, people have been calling for skipper Mahendra Singh DhoniÃÔ head and some are already calling it the worst phase in Indian cricket history but BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale believes itÃÔ almost impossible to expect a team to win all the time the slide was coming. Jagdale also clarified that the BCCI is trying to get its act together as quickly as possible. However, building a new team will take time and India will need to be patient. But in the T20 era, is patience a lost virtue? Excerpts from a tóÕe tóÕe with the BCCI secretary Jagdale: Was India ready for such a fall from grace? The slide is worrying but it was coming. And we are concerned but you have to give the team time. Every team in world cricket has gone through this kind of phase England, West Indies, Australia they are still rebuilding. So itÃÔ not something uniquely Indian. You also have to remember that in the last five years, we have won two World Cups and become World number 1 in Tests. Like all things in life what goes up, will also come down. It is only fair could anyone have expected the good days to continue forever? Do you think the BCCI got its succession policy wrong? How can you say that? ItÃÔ not easy to fill the boots of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman they are all all-time greats. To expect the youngsters to just walk into the side and start performing like them is a little too much. We have started organising more â tours already and the way I see it, you have hit a low to start the rebound. We are hoping that our worst phase is over. We have some good potential (Pujara, Rahane, Virat, Rohit, Manoj) in batting and we have been a bit unlucky with our bowling many of our young pacemen (Aaron, Yadav, Sreesanth) are injured or coming back. But once we get back to full strength, hopefully, the results will start to change. The seniors Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhoni, Yuvraj. ThereÃÔ always a question over them in Indian cricket. Does anyone even talk to them? We have been talking to the seniors but we donÃÕ have to come out and announce it to the world. WeÃ×e been talking to them and they understand their responsibility. They have been playing for India for so long; they donÃÕ need to be told about what they need to do. The transition is never easy even for the seniors. The manner in which they play has to change because some of the old support pillars just donÃÕ exist anymore. So all I can say is that we have to be patient they know that they have to answer not just the BCCI, but to the nation. So can we set any sort of time period to IndiaÃÔ climb back up the ranks? How can you say that we will be back to our best in 6 months or 1 year? It is almost impossible to put your finger on that. But what I can say is that you canÃÕ rebuild a squad in 6 months or 1 year. It takes time and a lot of effort. Not just from the players, but from everyone involved. We realise that we are down in the dumps but we promise to change it. But loss after loss could really kill the morale of this team. Is there anything positive about this period at all? I would say it is a challenging and exciting period. We are facing some really good teams England and Australia at home. Pakistan looked pretty good. But on the flip side, those who emerge from this will be strong. You will know that these players are here to stay for a long time and they will show India the way forward. The challenge for Sandeep (Patil) and his team are to find these players. ItÃÔ not like Dravid and Ganguly became instant stars they had their lows too and thatÃÔ how it is for everyone. You spoke about the gap between Ranji Trophy and international cricket. Is the BCCI doing anything to address that? See the media chooses to only highlight specifics. For example, the pitches in Ranji trophy have really changed this year but we only hear talk of the high-scoring games. But really, the bowlers have had a chance to shine this year too. ItÃÔ still early days but weÃÃl probably see this start to help the senior Indian team as well. WeÃ×e just completed our first camp and once we can make it more regular, it will hopefully throw up raw talent of the kind that Pakistan have. Pitches have been better in the 2nd half of the season. A tours are being organized, that's where BCCI deserves credit. Rest all is BS. If seniors are being replaced by Jadeja, Raina and Yuvraj for tests then good luck rebuilding. What's the point of Ranji and all the good pitches if someone avging 60 with the ball, gets selected.

Organize more A tours and get Indian youngsters to play the longer version in county cricket or domestic cricket in SA or Aus. Its impossible to play well overseas unless the cricketers get used to those conditions. England have been playing continuously in sub continent for the past 3 years or so till they became good enough to beat India at home. If BCCI is serious about India winning overseas, we need to play overseas more enough. Also, you cant expect the team to play all the time on flat pitches in IPL and ODIs and then face good bowling attacks in helpful conditions and survive. Same with bowlers. Too much cricket on flat tracks will make them defensive.
