Alan Lamb was pretty darn fantastic in LOI as well. In 1987 WC he single handedly defeated West Indies. England needed around 100 runs in 10 overs and Walsh who had been absolutely miserly, as always, got tanked by Alan Lamb who scored 70 or so runs himself, including 15 runs in last over. That was a brilliant game. He also once took Bruce Reid, again a very miserly bowler, to the cleaners by scoring 18 runs off last 5 deliveries of the game. That was a lost cause as well till Lamb came along. Do remember this is in 80s with big ground, no bowling restrictions, regular bat yada yada. Not modern day 20 yard grounds. Aussies and Pom fans would remember Alan Lamb very fondly for his battles against WI in Test, and against everyone in LOI.

He was a south african actually ...avged close to 40 in the 90's. But I remember him more for being Wasim's victim in the 92 world cup final

Yes Lamb was South African born, as was Robin Smith. Tony Greig was one of the first South African born to play for England.

Lamb was just a little before my time......The only thing I remember about him was in the early 90's during the early days of Star Sports in India,they used to telecast county cricket and Gavaskar absolutely tore into lamb on commentary about his batting stance because lamb was mocking some young batsman on his batting stance just prior to that. Sunny at his angry best. But on topic Robin Smith and Fairbrother were really good for England in ODI's,even Hick for all the criticism he gets was a better ODI player than test for England...

Also surprising that not many have Gower in their ODI squad the guy has 7 ODI hundreds for England before 1991 which is brilliant. Infact he is No4 on the list for most 100's for England in ODI's and that too playing in an era were 100's were less common :hatsoff:

Yeah Gower was one of the popular LOI cricketers. He was the leading run scorer in 1983 WC. English team of 80s had a lot of great characters actually. Not the most terrific of teams but certainly one of the best teams of quirky characters - Boycott, Gower, Gooch, Botham, Lamb, Gatting, Phil Edmonds. Lamb used to strut around in transexual dresses and Edmonds would place Gatting (his skipper) on forward short leg and then bowl full tosses so the batsman could hit Gatting lol. Was a fun team 80s England.
