He was a superb middle order accumulator and in fact great for this side that is otherwise full of stroke players. Will give the likes of KP someone to bat 'around'. Its great in theory top pack a middle order of stroke players, as I have, but needs someone to hold things together. I was thinking in fact to open my side with Treco and replacve Ganguly with RD...

Why not? Not every one in the ODI side needs to be aggressive. Dravid will form big partnerships and allow other players to bat freely without worrying about the other end. And Dravid can raise his game too and is involved in some of the biggest ODI stands ever, including two triple century partnerships with Tendulkar and Ganguly (beat that!) No other ODI player has been involved in two triple century stands. Dravid is very much underrated in ODIs,

By the end of career he was one of the best finishers and have won us game in the middle order. If you go by strike rates, Ganguly has a lame one aswell and so does Inzi who looks to hit from ball 1.

You need a guy like Dravid in the middle for the pitches where 220-250 are competetive totals and his 55 off 90 balls is valuable. You can't have an XI of all guns blazing strokeplayers because on tough pitches against tough bowling, they will have the frequent 100 allout scores without a tuk-tuk type of a guy. This is why there is a role for the Dravids, Chanderpauls, Kallises of the world in ODI cricket.

Alan Lamb was pretty darn fantastic in LOI as well. In 1987 WC he single handedly defeated West Indies. England needed around 100 runs in 10 overs and Walsh who had been absolutely miserly, as always, got tanked by Alan Lamb who scored 70 or so runs himself, including 15 runs in last over. That was a brilliant game. He also once took Bruce Reid, again a very miserly bowler, to the cleaners by scoring 18 runs off last 5 deliveries of the game. That was a lost cause as well till Lamb came along. Do remember this is in 80s with big ground, no bowling restrictions, regular bat yada yada. Not modern day 20 yard grounds. Aussies and Pom fans would remember Alan Lamb very fondly for his battles against WI in Test, and against everyone in LOI.
