Malcolm Merlyn Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Chuni Goswami,the Mohan Bagan forward of the 1950s and 60s and the Bengal cricket captain of 60s 70s is a rare genius.During his time in football he was widely regarded as the best forward in Asia.Constantly being selected in the Asia All Star XI in those days.He even got an oppurtunity to play for Tottenham Hotspurs in 1960s,but refused as he wanted to keep his bank job. In the 15 years that he spent in Mohun Bagan, they would go on to win 10 Calcutta league titles and reach 7 Durand cup finals, of which, they won 6, with Goswami leading the team on 5 occasions. Chuni Goswami made his international debut for India in 1956 during the team's 1-0 victory over the Chinese Olympic team.He went on to play for India in 50 international matches including in Olympics, Asian Games, Asia Cup and Merdeka Cup. He captained India to the Asian Games Gold Medal in 1962 and a Silver in the 1964 Asia Cup in Tel Aviv and in the Merdeka Cup. He also captained the Bengal Ranji team to two Ranji Finals.He played a total of 46 FC games with bowling avg of 24 and batting avg of 28. Chunni Goswami carried the flag that was hoisted by PK and Samran Banerjee in 1956 Melbourne Olympics where India had made it to football semis. In 1960s India was a decent football team on Asian circuit. Also the good days of East Bengal - Mohun Bagan - Mohammedan Sporting rivalry.

There was a section of Bengalis and Chuni Goswami and PK Banerjee are seen in the video.
