rkt.india Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Why would that make a bowler bowl slower? He is not a quick bowler by any means. At best, he is clocked around 138-139 at fastest the last match I saw of him at Indore, but he has great outswinger and on helpful tracks like in SA, he can be really handful and he can get extra bounce too. I am sure he will gain in pace too as he plays more. His average pace is around 132-133 right now and likes of Philander and Anderson too don't bowl quicker than that.

You cant compare this guy with them just because they bowl at the same pace. A rookie bowler should bowl 135-140+ to make up for the lack of experience or skill to get top class batsmen out. Especially in places like India where the ball stops swinging after first 7-8 overs and pitches are slow, someone who is really quick through the air could be effective. So far among the new bowlers, only Shami Ahmed seems to fit the bill but stupidly enough, they left him out of this game.

BK is different than Pandey. BK is a typical swing bowler, especially inswing bowler and his outswing does not have that kind of impact that Pandey's have and inswing bowlers usually find it hard at test level especial the ones who lacks pace.

Let me answer you, no way and in fact, Philander does not swing the ball appreciably. He just bowls accurately and straight and hits the seam to move it off the deck. Anderson swings the ball and If you had watched Mumbai vs MP match, you would not have said the same that Pandey does swing the ball. He has one of the best outswing in India currently. He had taken 6/54 wickets in first innings of that match against Mumbai, total 9 wickets in the match. and outswing is his strength, though he can bowl inswing too every now and then. I am saying this because I have seen him bowl on a better track than this.

rkt.india Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 BK seams the ball too from what I have seen and can be dangerous imo But in helpful conditions, not on a track like this. This is even for Pandey until and unless he bowls around 135-140 range, a bit quicker than what he is bowling right now. Shami is quicker but is a shorter guy. I would have loved the bowler who has mixture of Pandey and Shami, decent height plus outswing like Pandey have but at better pace like Shami have, and that are Ankit Rajpoot and Sandeep Warrier, both decently quick and tall too though they are not yet ready to play international cricket.
Dumbbells Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Iswhar pandey is 24. He is at his peak of his strength. I would expect him to bowl atleast 135+. I am bit disappointed. If he can bowl 135s consistently, he should play for india A team regularly.

I have not seen a better bowling spell from any bowler in India than what he had bowled in Duleep Final last year.
Lord Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 I have seen Shami move he ball both ways. I have not seen a better bowling spell from any bowler than what he had bowled in Duleep Final last year. but he didnt do anything like that in ODIs he played. maybe was a one-off or he just lost it
rkt.india Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 but he didnt do anything like that in ODIs he played. maybe was a one-off or he just lost it He is not a big mover of the ball like BK but does enough to trouble the batsmen. In ODIs, he mostly bowled to keep the batsmen in check and that is understandable. He will be effective when he will bowl full. Even BK was playing the same final he played and BK looked ordinary. He went to WI, BK was there too and even there, he was our best bowler.
express bowling Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Pacers like Umesh and Aaron, bowling 140 k to 150 k, maybe rare in India but we have had quite a few pacers who have moved the ball between 135 k and 140 k in their better years. I would hope that the new pace sensations would be atleast that.
express bowling Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 As the domestic speed gun readings are probably a bit slower than internationally used ones, it is still possible that Pandey is actually bowling 135 k to 140 k. If Shami had played, we would have known this for sure by comparing his speeds with Pandey.
saneindian Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 Umesh Yadav, other than one spell where he averaged around 137-138 kph in the 2011 Irani Trophy, hasn't bowled many quick spells in domestic FC crickt, same is the case with Aaron who bowled around 134-135 in the same match. For his height and the bounce he gets, 135-136 avg speed will be ideal for Ishwar and he is capable of hitting those speeds regularly. For that matter for any test standard bowler, 135-136 avg speed is good enough IMO IF he is accurate and can hit a consistent line and length.
saneindian Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 IIRC Awana had bowled around 138-139 avg speed in a Ranji match a couple of years ago which was televised. SHami Ahmed in the DT final last year, which RKT referred to, was around 133-134 but looked faster filtering out the faulty speed readings, the speedgun in that match was a joke). Different pitches though both of them.
Vivek.S.123 Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Raina is gonna get called back to the Test team based on his century

Different pitches though both of them. The domestic speed gun readings are almost always slower than international ones. Zaheer, who normally bowls 130 k to 138 k these days, was generally between 127 k and 133 k in the last Ranji match that he played, even when he put in effort. Sreesanth looked lively in the last couple of bowlers that he bowled today. We all know that a lively Sree bowls atleast 137/138 k but he was clocking 130 to 133 k at that time today. There are many more examples. I think it would be inaccurate on our part to gauge the speed of a new quick based on speed gun readings in domestic matches.
saneindian Posted February 7, 2013 Author Posted February 7, 2013 ^ By that yardstick, Awana should have been bowling 145+ in the t20s :P In domestic cricket, players do not go flat out whereas in int'l cricket, due to higher intensity they put in that extra effort all the time, hence the better speeds IMO. The speed guns are a minor issue.

The speed guns are a minor issue. Awana generally bowls 130 k to 135 k in Ranji matches. In the international T20 s he bowled a fastest of almost 144 k , quite a few 140 + deliveries, even though he was clearly not in rhythm. Indian pacers do not bowl with effort even in internationals. Moreover, it seems highly unlikely that a young pacer on the verge of international selection, or someone hoping for s comeback, would not go flat out. Yet, Umesh and Aaron, before their international debut could not bowl 145 k in Irani and Ranji.
