Press freedom index: India drops to 140th rank, lowest since 2002 http://www.firstpost.com/india/press-freedom-index-india-drops-to-140th-rank-lowest-since-2002-607726.html

Washington: India has dropped nine places to 140th rank in the list of 179 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index, which its authors said is the lowest for the ÅØorldÃÔ biggest democracy since 2002. Ūn Asia, India (140th, -9) is at its lowest since 2002 because of increasing impunity for violence against journalists and because Internet censorship continues to grow, Reporters Without Borders said in its World Press Freedom Index for the year 2013. Ťhina (173rd, +1) shows no sign of improving. Its prisons still hold many journalists and netizens, while increasingly unpopular Internet censorship continues to be a major obstacle to access to information. As last year, the list is topped by three European countries Finland, Netherlands and Norway. Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea continue to be at the bottom of the list as has been in the last three years. ŵhe Press Freedom Index published by Reporters Without Borders does not take direct account of the kind of political system but it is clear that democracies provide better protection for the freedom to produce and circulate accurate news and information than countries where human rights are flouted, Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire said. Ūn dictatorships, news providers and their families are exposed to ruthless reprisals, while in democracies news providers have to cope with the mediaÃÔ economic crises and conflicts of interest. While their situation is not always comparable, we should pay tribute to all those who resist pressure whether it is aggressively focused or diffuse, he said. According to the report, in almost all parts of the world, influential countries including India that are regarded as ÅÓegional models have fallen in the index. Observing that there has been general decline in freedom of information in South Asia, the report said the Indian subcontinent was the Asian region that saw the sharpest deterioration in the climate for those involved in news and information in 2012. Ūn the Maldives, which crashed to 103rd place (-30), the events that led to the resignation of President Mohammed Nasheed in February led to violence and threats against journalists in state television and private media outlets regarded as pro-Nasheed by the coup leaders, it said. In India, the ÅØorldÃÔ biggest democracy? the authorities insist on censoring the Web and imposing more and more taboos, while violence against journalists goes unpunished and the regions of Kashmir and Chhattisgarh become increasingly isolated, it said.

With the likes of Arnab Goswami and Sagarika Ghose hogging the tv, it was always going to turn news broadcasting into a Jerry Springer $h!t fest. Its about press freedom' date=' not the quality of news channels :poink:[/quote'] The poor quality is the one of the many symptoms, and I just highlighted news channels because they are one of the worst culprits (and most visible) to have happily obliged to report through one angle only.

What does it matter?
You request an RTI report to investigate where the taxpayer money or natural resource goes and end up dead. How does that sound ?

"Increased violence against journalists & internet censoring" What does Arnab/India TV have to do with the above ?
Should they not be pushing the government why journalists are being murdered or Internet is being censored? Isn't TV news part of "Free Press".

:hysterical:, Are you serious, one a movie star, one a famous actor/TV director, one a famous author, all releasing/released movies soon. For them it's brilliant PR mere sensationalism And so many of these news media have been involved in blatant lies, the recent knee jerk reporting that protesters killed the policeman in delhi, how can one forget the blanket coverage over radia tapes by the english media. I am blaming the media, the media ain't no victim in this, they are the collaborators, along with major corporates and Congress, crony media at it's best. not all, one just has to make sure to scour through all platforms from regional languages, hindi to english to get a broader picture. but the mainstream media is definitely crony and crass.

Pardon my cynicism, but you seem to come across as someone who is happy with the misery of the nation, so long as your weird agenda is achieved. You may want to escape from that mindset of putting India down just because it warms your heart :winky: On the topic of this survey, these surveys seem to be like C grade Hollywood movies. Nobody in the West cares about them, and these movies seem to run in tiny little cinema halls in Asia and Africa. I can assure that these survey did not even register in American media.

So that's your barometer, only care if the west cares. :headshake: And now calling some Indian media channels $h!t on stick is putting India down? Also is that our benchmark that we should only highlight what appears in the US media. :dontknow: I pity your judgment.
