1983-2011 Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 The much-publicised Kingfisher Ultra Vizag Fashion Week, organised by liquor major Kingfisher in the coastal Andhra city of Visakhapatnam was cancelled on Sunday following protests from women's organisations and Vishwa Hindu Parishad for allegedly denigrating Indian culture and Hindu gods and goddesses. According to police, the event which kicked off at Hotel Park on the beach road was cancelled on the third day following a complaint from VHP district unit secretary G Radhakrishna. The leader had alleged that the models who had participated in the ramp walk show on Saturday had the pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses such as Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi on their skimpy clothes. "We have booked a case against the organisers under Section 295-A of the Indian Penal Code (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs). We are investigating into the complaint," the police official said. The fashion show, which was held for the first time in Visakhapatnam, was organised by Kingfisher in collaboration with popular fashion designing firm Storm. However, the show had to face stiff resistance from women's organisations like All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) and Progressive Organisation of Women (POW), besides the local left-wing student organisations. For the last one week, these organisations had been staging protest demonstrations in front of the hotel and also district collector's office, alleging that the fashion show was aimed at projecting women in semi-clad outfits, which would push crime against women in Visakapatnam and other parts of the region. They argued that obscenity would lead to further increase in crime against women. However, the police did not take any action against the organisers and the fashion show kicked off with a gala function on Friday. About 40 glamorous models drawn from various parts of the country and abroad took part in the fashion extravaganza. Popular designers - Shravan Kumar and James Ferreira - presented some exceptional designs in a mosaic of fabrics and spring colours from their collections - Elemental Fusion and Resort 2013 - respectively. On Saturday, British-Indian model and Kingfisher calendar girl Karishma Kotak, who was the brand ambassador of Vizag Fashion week, walked the ramp along with popular Telugu actor Daggubati Rana, followed by a group of models. However, as the fashion show was telecast live, the VHP activists noticed that some of the models were wearing dresses with pictures of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Lakshmi on their lower garments. "It was terrible and disgusting. How can those girls wear such skimpy dresses which had the images of Hindu gods and goddesses printed on them? As they were walking on the ramp, their undergarments were also visible. It is a deliberate act by the fashion designers taking advantage of the tolerance among the Hindu community," Thota Venkateshwara Rao, regional vice-president of VHP told Mail Today. He said he had brought it to the notice of his colleagues in the VHP and they had lodged a complaint with the Visakhapatnam police. "We are glad that the show has been stopped. But it should be an eye-opener for the Hindu community, which has been maintaining silence despite the repeated attack on the Indian culture," Rao said. Several Tollywood and Bollywood celebrities including Meera Chopra, Tapsee, Deeksha Seth and Lakshmi Manchu were also supposed to walk the ramp on the third day. http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/vhp-forces-cancellation-of-fashion-show-in-visakhapatnam/1/248746.html
gs Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Surely hindu terror? Shinde was right on the money!!
Clarke Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 It has been reported that exhibiting images of Lord Ganesha on the garments of models in the fashion show was being held at a city hotel, we are investigating the matter, K. Lakshmana Murthy, a local police official said. The VHP stressed that such fashion shows were degrading the culture of the country. We condemn such fashion shows and moreover, printing the images of Gods and Goddesses on the clothes is also condemnable, said G Radhakrishna, VHP Vice-President. On the other hand, the designer in question, James Ferreira said that he just wanted to spread the message that god is everywhere. “I think Ganpathi is one of the cutest gods in the world and I just associated him to the little angels from Italian renaissance. So what I wanted to do was to show people that god is everywhere and god is everything,” he said. The four-day event had begun in the coastal city on February 1. http://news.in.msn.com/national/vhp-protests-against-fashion-show-event-cancelled :haha:

CSK Fan Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 And hinduism moves a step closer to becoming exactly like other fanatical religions. Wonder how people cannot see how alike right wing hindus are with right wing muslims or christians
CSK Fan Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Mr. James' date=' replace Ganpati with Prophet Mohammed and then watch the fun![/quote'] Yes, but isnt that the other religion's or its follower's weakness and doesnt everyone laugh at them or look down upon them? You want hinduism to be exactly the same as them?
ravishingravi Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 The truth of the matter is VHP exists because Kangress wants it to. It also serves their political motive. It should have been banned sometime back.
DomainK Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 The biggest and mote amazing trait of Hinduism/sanatan dharm was its tolerance and its liberal outlook. Something that is now almost extinct. On the contrary, now we have fanatics who want to force their interpretation of Hinduism on others and have appointed themselves as moral guardians of the society.

The apostrophe is short for "is". Don't mean to be a grammar nazi but I just wanted to point that out. :)

Lurker Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 In theory I do agree this is a bad development and we can without morons like VHP. That said, I do not have a lot of sympathy for the so called fashion shows anyway. 90% plus of the times the dress/style they show are useless and makes you wonder if most of us would have done a better job?? also whats with the obsession with Gods and Godesses?? Who wears a bikini or boxer brief with Ganesh or Christ?? That looks beyond retarded. I wont even wear a Tshirt like that. Some religious symbols, like Cross and Om, do look great (sometimes). But they look great because of the aesthetics, not because of religious reasons.

You have finally went past the whole dating, dinner and movie, expensive bills and that waiter looking at you with a Seriously dude you are on a home run here look. And you are back at her place, or yours (does it matter) Out comes her jeans, and she is wearing a Ganpati boyshorts. What do you do next? I can see a ferocious KLPD on the horizon, with many desi chaps start to do sastaang pranaam infront of the girl

But they look great because of the aesthetics, not because of religious reasons. I happened to talk with a fashion designer regarding the fact that the clothes models wear in fashion shows are very far away from people actually wear and it's something I have always wondered about as well. She gave me the reason behind it - the clothes for fashion shows are seldom if ever mass produced or even produced for the elite class. They are deliberately made in an exaggerated manner than the actual designs which are going to be on sale to attract attention to the uniqueness in the designs. So, for example the neck of a dress in a fashion show is deliberately going to be made deeper than what they intend to sell in order to attract attention towards the design of the neck. Or the shade of red is going to be more flashy than the one which will be sold to accentuate the effect on the ramp etc. etc. Thus I was able to solve one of the biggest mysteries which had bothered me for years and years.
gs Posted February 7, 2013 Posted February 7, 2013 Yes' date=' but isnt that the other religion's or its follower's weakness and doesnt everyone laugh at them or look down upon them? You want hinduism to be exactly the same as them?[/quote'] Not really. It was tongue in cheek remark for the likes of James and MF Hussain. But the thing to ponder about is why are artists from other intolerant (vis-a-vis Hinduism) religions bent on doing things (like painting Hindu Gods in the nude) which maybe construed as disrespectful by its followers? Why not a nude Jesus or Mohammed to try out their artistic talents on their own Gods first? Isnt't that freedom of expression too? Except for a few loonnies, for most part Hinduism is very tolerant and I hope it stays that way. In many ways Hindu society of ancient India was far more progressive than the one today. Kamasutra and the temples of Khujraho are testament to this. I wish things had stayed that way! :--D
