dial_100 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 I have recently posted some expensive thing on the craigslist to sell. In india it would cost anywhere from 800-1000. But getting such thing in USA cost you nearly $2-300. I put a post on CG and say what? Uncle trying really hard bargain on how he belongs to that city in india where this was made. How he worked in Army etc etc. And I was really like, Yeah great. And finally he offers $700 for a my quote of $1200. Now another guy comes over and he offers me only $900. Whats wrong with these people yaar. The worst part is when I reject the offer then they come back with a counter offers by adding $25 or $50. Really???? A new product cost you $1600 in US market. These things are not available that readily or depreciate as such. They carry a great value. I need to sell as I am not finding it fit in my house right now. I wont ask why people bargain. But my questions is why do people bargain the way they do?? I hate bargains. Sometimes, I do buy used stuff and but I never find my offers so ridiculous on something I like. I have had great experience selling things in the past. I had a PingPong table that I had to sell few years go where I got $40 more than what I expected because 3 people showed up to see and they all liked it. haha... But indians are worst when dealing in used stuff...we are really cheap people ... :giggle:
The Outsider Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 You are putting stuff on Craiglist and expecting people not to bargain? Pretty much everyone who buys/sells on Craiglist does it with the expectation of bargaining. Put it on Ebay if you don't want bargaining.

Specially for buyers who are not entirely smitten with the product. This may very well be a case of Buyer's market where the buyer can call the shots even if your asking price is very fair. Just hang tight, and good luck!

You just have to say No if the offer is not what you expected, happens all the time in India. Obviously whatever it is you are trying to sell is not at all cheap if it costs 60K , an average joe will find it difficult to buy and don't expect it to be sold without bargaining.

Bargain is when you offer 1000 for 1200 asking price. People start with 700 is laughable. thats all. I will try it on eBay now. I am totally not into eBay but I will give it a shot. It seems I am the only one who is totally surprised with this amount of bargaining we indians do. I guess I need to start doing that. Trouble is how to find that besharmi to get into it.:cantstop:
The Outsider Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 ^ Not just Indians. People bargain in general over stuff put on Craiglist. It's pretty much considered a norm. The plus side is Craigslist is perhaps the most convenient and quick way to sell things. Try eBay. You can always put in conditions like it will have to be picked up by the buyer etc. if you don't want to get into the hassle of shipping and packing the stuff.

Just hang tight, and good luck! Oh well, I am very patient person. Its a very niche type of thing so there are not many buyers for such a thing. I aint desperate to sell it until I get a reasonable price. So I use it whenever I find time or else it is lying around or in the closet.

Only for my hobby that I buy used stuff as there are plenty of small things needed but largely I buy things w/o wasting much time. new or otherwise. Let me try eBay.

If you don't want it that way, then you must mention in your ad "Firm Price. No negotiations please". People jack up the price and list it initially. If it does not sell, the same item gets listed over a course of several weeks with reduced prices. So many times I see an item listed this way: $200 / OBO* *or best offer.

I do have a firm price and serious inquiries only in my post. I reacted little when UNKEL played game with me saying how he can buy this thing in his native city for $700. So he wants it for the same price. Thats not a bargain, thats outright waste of time. I have not met many like these people when I was in India.

Sri. I did exact same thing on my last trip to india when I had missed my flight in bombay then I took a discount voucher from airline for Rs2800. In places like few furniture stores, car dealers I exactly know how much I want to pay them and I give offer or I walk away. I hate low balling game.

vandokkum Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 If you are a good seller then you put the starting price at 1700 for something you would be willing to sell for 1500 so you have some bargaining power. People will always bargain on craigslist, just make sure you don't put it too high in that case most people won't even be interested. I sold 4 ps3 games that were about a month old for 45 dollars each, I put the starting price at 55 and offered to take it to the buyer.

Brainfade Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Did you state that your asking price is firm/non-negotiable? If no one bites for a few days, repost with a lower price and so on. I sold a car once on Craigslist - gave out the VIN so folks could Carfax it if they so pleased. My price was non-negotiable. Sold it the next day.
