Completely agree' date=' the way he played great spinners like Maxwell is a clear indicator.[/quote'] I wasn't talking about playing good spinners but his aggressive stroke play. There is a clear difference and Vijay has a lot to prove against playing good bowlers in difficult conditions.

Important thing is to prepare well and get into the right temperament before playing tests. In IPL, T20s you have to play a certain way. In tests, you need to be lot more patient, respect the bowling, cut down on certain risky shots and accumulate runs. South Africans also play IPL but they are no.1 in tests.

But majority of the other games in their own country where they have to put a premium on their wicket. So they are used to play with discipline. In India batting is easier. Often you can take the bowling for granted. In the IPL it is even worse. Guys like ABDV, Kallis do well in IPL. But they were established players at the test level even before IPL. On the other hand most of our guys are barely established in their zonal team let alone Indian team. Their goal is to impress the IPL franchises to boost their market value. Suddenly when they are asked to play Tests after an IPL season they struggle to make the switch while Saffers make that switch effortlessly. Vijay has not reached that stage where he can switch between different formats seamlessly.

It seems then that the domestic cricket is at fault rather than the IPL! Also, I don't understand why IPL teams would pick players who don't even have a domestic pedigree, when seasoned domestic cricket veterans (like Wasim Jaffer) are available. Maybe there is a BCCI mandate to pick Indian players only below a certain age and experience.

With Vijay so far it can not be blamed on IPL though can it. He has gone through phases where he has either been a good test bat (at home at least) or a good IPL bat, he can not translate across the formats. he is still in 'test mode' his less than good run for CSK last seasons IPL is testament to that too. Seems to me like the airy dries outside off though still in existance have been reigned in well. Hung around well today just needs to keep that going for (a lot) longer.
