Karthik had a decent England series. In the one test he played in SA he made 63 and 38 not out. Remember the match when They played Sehwag in the middle order due to bad form in the first innings. Despite Karthik's 63 in the first innings as an opener they promoted Viru up again pushed Karthik down to no.6 in the 2nd innings. Viru failed. In England after one failure he stood couple of feet outside the crease to negotiate swing from Sidebottom and ANderson. It paid off.

I remember Karthik doing well as opener in that England series, especially in one test where the ball was swinging and seaming around and he played very well. Just goes to show you can do well in those conditions provided you have decent technique and more importantly, respect the bowling and the conditions, leave a lot of balls outside off and rotate strike as much as possible and then put the odd bad ball away. Gambhir and Sehwag in the previous tours of Eng and Aus were not patient enough and didnt work hard enough to score runs.

They promoted him up for quick runs based on his first innings 40. He was in horrible form. A move that backfired big time. India was in great position to either draw or win the test.
