Raghav_12 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Well, off late I am seeing Indian system's rejuvanated love for Death Penalty. Our president seems to be in hurry to get rid off all inmates awarded death penalties and rejecting mercy pleas dozen at a time. Yesterday, I read bus driver who had mowed over 9 people dead in Pune last year has been given death penalty. Now there is very little doubt that what that guy did was in fit of insanity without anykind of animosity with the people he killed. There is also little doubt, though very unfortunately, that this penalty would act as the deterrent for a person who get into similar fit. World-wide there is definite shift away from death penalty. Many of them made changes in lawbooks to get it stopped while many others stopped carrying out death penaties without declaring it openly. All countries in EU don't practice death penalty and you can't be member of EU if you practice it. Main rationale put forward towards abolishment of death penalty is, there is no prrof that death penalty actually works as deterrent. Rather it devalues human life in society leading to increase in crime of murders. Abolitionists bring example from American states where states those have banned death penalty completely have lesser crime rate than some other states like Texas where death penalties are really rampant. I personally believe other than very-very few cases where keeping a convict alive would lead to greater dangers, death penalty should be done away with. It is not in line with the basic principal of justice which is reformation of human being. It is more like revenge than justice.

Raghav_12 Posted April 11, 2013 Author Posted April 11, 2013 so more crime in texas is because of death penalty? Can't say that. But one thing is sure that death penalties are not bringing any reduction in crime rate.

A person who's gone through a fit of rage and mowed down 9 people can do it again in another fit of rage. Plus its very difficult within the Indian system to track down criminals once they are jail. Plus even within the prison premises, a person causes severe damage to co-inmates when he gets into a fit of rage. Unless we have the best possible system to prevent any such events in the future, India cannot by no means do away with the death penalty.

Tiger80 Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 What is the substiitute of death penalty? Life without parole. I am sorry but in developing country like India keeping a hardcore criminal alive is a burden on Govt.

someone Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 There are so many factors to consider especially in India. Such as financial costs? Extremely high costs of the food and security of those jailed persons. Of course, there are some benefits such as using it as a vote-bank politics in keeping them alive. Then of course, given how India is perceived to be a "soft" nation/target, sometimes you want to send a strong message and really have a psychological effect.
Muloghonto Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Dont like death penalty. Would rather have life sentences and prison work gangs. That way we get to make these criminals put something back in society.
someone Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Dont like death penalty. Would rather have life sentences and prison work gangs. That way we get to make these criminals put something back in society. Explain how Kasab could have been put back into society?
Muloghonto Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Explain how Kasab could have been put back into society? nonono. Not put criminals back into society. Make criminals work for the rest of their lives ( chain gangs style) to give something back to society. They still get to stay behind bars for the rest of their living moments.

Then they are imprisoned at Gitmo in subhuman conditions without possibility of trial

Take these prison chain gangs into these dangerous areas and get them to build the roads. If they die because of some trigger happy Chinese/Burmese soldier, tough beans.

And what is the possibility that they will not run from their? If they are on life without parole then majority will try to make an escape attempt. The influential one will even bribe the officials and make an escape. Police will need lot of honest men to make sure they don't run and economically it may not worth.
Clarke Posted April 11, 2013 Posted April 11, 2013 Utmost necessity. There's too much scum around that doesn't deserve this planet.

Ever seen the movie 'o brother where art thou?' ? chain gangs are where 20-40 people walk around digging something, with everyone chained to one another by ankle shackles, 3-5 foot long chain from each other. And if the entire chain gang manages to escape, i am okay in executing the prison officials watching them.

Remember Kandahar, That is what will happen if we let these people stay in our Jail for Life. We have to remember, India not being too technically advanced, it will become very tough for our defence personnel to find these criminals if they ever manage to escape. It is quite easy for people to go underground in India as most transactions are done via Cash and there isnt too many security cameras around 95% of the country.
