How is salary cap related to a team's spending limit? The issue of salary cap for capped versus uncapped players has got nothing to do with the spending purse limit. Both are as orthogonal issues as you may get. Also, the franchisees and the IPL committee has recognized the disparity/farce in the uncapped salary player rule.

Simply spending the entire salary cap does not guarantee a good team, teams like Pune etc are an excellent example of this. RR have spent money prudently and are the most profitable team in IPL. Despite not having big names, a large media spending RR have punched well above their weight. In real terms RR should be an example of how teams should wisely invest in players rather than simply drool over their international records and spend senseless money. But the retaining of players for undisclosed amounts is a farce, Players like Watson, Samson, Hodge know that they would earn a lot more in one of the big name teams.

Ok point taken, but the essence of my post was that you should be willing to spend your cap money to get the best players possible provided you can afford the cap money.

Watson is one of the biggest name in T20 cricket. While Hodge is the leading run scorer in T20 cricket. I think Watson is earning a million plus at Rajasthan. They are not littered with big names but do have some of them.

Even Watson himself has credited IPL many times for giving him the great platform. And Hodge did nothing of note in IPL and was never a big name here. Really,they do not buy and go for big names but rather the players get to become big names when they play for RR.

There is one thing you fail to take into account - the spending purse can the player limit is so high for rich teams like MI that they can involve in the game of buying players just so that the other teams do not have access to their abilities. Considering this ground reality, you can't compare player per 10000 USD spent as the player who is NOT playing or performing is ideally contributing to the team's fortunes as that player isn't available to the other teams. In case you are interested, you may want to look into some literature on Game Theory with utility functions and payoffs. IPL is a classic example of "games" - it will be an interesting case study for such a model.

The next 2 years he spent in oblivion recovering from injuries and fighting with a certain Symonds for a place in the Australian team as an all-rounder. He missed both the 2007 WC, 2007 WT20 and Ashes 2006-07 (unexpected retirement of Damien Martyn) due to injuries IIRC. The first IPL auction was a fish market with franchisees unable to understand the mechanics of an auction and it was mostly on name than on ability (read Deccan chargers). RR unfortunately couldn't do that as they had limited spending options and hence went for worth than choice.

Your theory about RR players providing more value because they pick small names and provide more worth is not directly true. In IPL, even the non-players (big names) provide value despite not playing the tournament for reasons I have detailed in my earlier posts. Take some time to think over it. FYI - Royals are (and will be) my most favorite team of the IPL for precisely the reasons you mention.

Yet, only RR noticed it and used it well. As all the 7 teams went crazy in the first auction while RR smartly went and picked some good players in the 2nd auction. (Includes Watson) Watson hardly was a name at that time and was seen as a confused player. RR brought him and defined his role well and really helped him to launch back his international career. Has never looked back and I said before, he himself has admitted that he owns IPL a lot.

At that time he was an established player. Hodge they bought $500,000 i think.

Sure RR was "smart" in picking good players but the big teams did their fair share of "smartness" by picking big names (who ultimately didn't play most games). Why would one do that? Because if you have extra money you can afford to buy players so that other teams do not have access to them. I call that "smart" as well. I wouldn't call someone who has won a Man of the Tournament in the multi nation tournament that too in the same country were IPL was held a "no name". Not a "big name" but calling him a "no name" is over simplification.
