The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have maintained their stand on keeping their players exclusive by not allowing them to participate in any other global T20 league apart from the IPL. Munaf Patel became the latest victim of the board's policy after the Baroda pacer was denied permission to accept an offer from Lancashire to represent the county in the English T20 competition, which starts later this month. The 29-year-old fast bowler, who was part of the Mumbai Indians outfit that won the IPL, had been approached by the northern county recently and had subsequently applied for a no-objection certificate from the BCCI. "Patel had requested the BCCI to allow him to go play for Lancashire. But since his contract would have included only T20 matches, we didn't grant him the permission. The BCCI's stand has been clear that our players are not allowed to go play in T20 leagues outside India. But we will gladly allow anyone who's interested in playing longer format cricket abroad," a top BCCI official confirmed to The Indian Express . Patel, who last played for India in 2011, had missed the entire first-class domestic season in India last year owing to a toe injury. He had, however, returned to action in the one-dayers before playing a handful of games for Mumbai in the IPL. Days after Mumbai won the competition, Lancashire had expressed their desire to sign him up as one of their two foreign players for their domestic T20 tournament. Meanwhile, the BCCI had also declined requests from the organisers of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) to allow Indian players to participate despite all other countries having agreed to free their personnel for the upcoming T20 tourney in the West Indies. The board had stuck to their guns even last year when Sri Lankan Premier League (SLPL) officials came calling with a similar appeal.

Why shouldn't players who have limited chance of playing for India not be allowed to go and play in these global competitions? Am sure the likes of Yusuf Pathan, Rajat Bhatia, Sid Trivedi and a few others will definitely be in demand.

what will happen to IPL if other countries do the same?
good question. our problem is one of insecurity. what if rival leagues steal our players? what will happen to our money making machine? yada yada yada...

Does this apply to all contracted BCCI players or only the ones who have IPL contracts ? If someone from MadhyaPradesh XI who is not in any IPL team, got a 20/20 offer overseas, is he allowed to accept it ?

BCCI is a moron. They should give green signal to their players to play in county. The very same morons then go to public and keep talking trash like : "Our players cant play overseas"

You are a moron. Read the OP carefully. BCCI has no objection to players playing in longer format which will help improve their game. This is only for T20.

I think is a good move that the BCCI are issuing NOC's for test cricket abroad. If this report is true. Pujara and Rahane maybe need to try their luck in england.

In this case Lancashire probably went for Munaf due to the large south asian population of Indian pop in the county of Lancashire (manchester and surrounding regions). they do have good t20 batsman so are going for a bowler. Munaf is also somebody who still just about qualifies for the via rules.

You still don't get my point. It is about taking the BCCI officials moral high ground to scrutiny. BCCI should've issued NoC. Now whether Rahane is eligible or not is not BCCI's mandate. This all IF the source in the said article claims to give preference to longer form of the cricket.
