Tiger80 Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 NEW DELHI: The rift in BJP was on Monday wide open with L K Advani quitting from all the party posts, apparently opposing the elevation of his one-time protege Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as election campaign committee chief. 85-year-old Advani, a founder member of the BJP and considered the party patriarch after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, resigned from all main fora of the party -- parliamentary board, national executive and election committee. In his resignation letter to party President Rajnath Singh, who announced the appointment of Modi as chairman of the election campaign committee yesterday at the BJP national executive, he rued that the BJP was no longer the "same idealistic party" created by Shyama Prasad Mookerjee, Deendayal Upadhyaya, Nanaji Deshmukh and Vajpayee. "For some time I have been finding it difficult to reconcile either with the current functioning of the party, or the direction in which it is going," he said. "Most leaders of ours are now concerned just with their personal agendas," Advani said in his one-page resignation. Advani had skipped the three-day deliberations of the party in Goa over the weekend citing health reasons. This was the first time Advani had stayed away from the national executive and the office bearers' meeting prior to it. In the letter, Advani said, "All my life I have found working for the Jana Sangh and the Bharatiya Janata Party a matter of great pride and endless satisfaction for myself". After finding fault with the way the party was being run now, he concluded the letter saying, "I have decided, therefore, to resign from the three main fora of the party, namely, the national executive, the parliamentary board and the election committee. This may be regarded as my resignation letter," he said. Advani's letter was delivered in person to Singh at 11 am. Advani and Singh had a meeting later at 12:30 pm. Sources said Rajnath Singh and Modi were to go together to Advani's house and get his blessings. But Advani asked Singh to come alone for a meeting with him. When the two met, Advani expressed anger and resentment over Modi's elevation. Singh is believed to have requested Advani to withdraw his resignation but the party veteran said he was firm on his decision. Significantly, Advani continues to be chairman of the BJP parliamentary party and working chairman of NDA. Party sources said that Singh has not accepted his resignation and efforts will be made to make him withdraw it. In the midst of media speculation over his absence that was ascribed to his reservations over Modi's elevation, the Gujarat chief minister claimed yesterday that he had talked to Advani and got his blessings. Party leaders, including President Rajnath Singh, had put a brave face, saying it was ill health that kept Advani away from the Goa deliberations. "Whatever has happened has happened on the basis of consensus," Singh had said yesterday after declaring Modi as BJP's election campaign chief. FischerTal Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 he may or may not think that he will be the PM candidate in 2014 but he is probably the most experienced leader in Indian politics today and knows for sure that Modi isn't the right man to lead the BJP and now he's showing his displeasure over Modi's elevation as Campaign Committee Chief. he doesnt want modi to lead BJP for fear of losing his authority over the party. he wants sushma at the helm. with her, the party will go absolutely nowhere in 2014.

Modi bhakts might think of going solo and break the NDA...Modi going nowhere, in that case... I hope NDA breaks to effing put pay Modi's (the man in hurry) ambitions.

Excellent decision by Advani and he should stick to it. Hope the NDA breaks apart soon. Why should NDA clean up Modi's shyte?

NDA will only exist if primary opposition party is in a leading position to form government. No way will that happen without Modi. Expect deve gowda type govt if Modi doesnt lead BJP cuz Congis are certainly not coming back to power.

Besides, that egotistical man with a "my way or the highway" attitude can never manage a coalition Govt with the likes of Jayalalitha, Mayawati, Mamta, Naveen patnaik as leaders to be managed.

And why do you think Modi is the issue? This would have happened with any other person's elevation. And Advani has also previous shown his tendency to quit when things do not go his way. And another major issue is that BJP campaign chief is hardly a major role but has been made a big issue due to the media's hype. This issue has nothing to with Modi and yesterday really. Advani wants to be in the high power in everything. I do not question this as any politician has ambitions and unlike Congress, BJP does not have some dynasty rule and everyone can get chances. But when you talk about internal democracy, the most popular leader within the party will always be the one forward. And once again Advani has failed to realize that, he knows his time is running out and his lasting ambition to be PM means he is not go down without a fight. He talks about the party being run with personal agendas, yet it is his own personal agenda which is behind all this. It's was always gonna happen and it's good for India in the long term but the timing of it is an absolute disappointment.

As far as proper facts, all the NDA parties have welcomed Modi except JDU. And JDU is an classic case of what is wrong with the country, fake secularism. But that's another matter. Actually, this might for once make the opposition united. In the past, it's only because of the failure of a united opposition that Congress made their governments.

If anything, he is one of the most humble politicians in India. Coalition Govt is certainly interesting but one thing is certain, things can change and there is absolutely no consistency about Indian politics. And for that matter another matter, parties who preach about secularism are and will never be a secular party. And there is already evidence presented by various media groups that Modi factors leads the polls.

People in these areas would like a strong leader like Modi but come election day and they'll be sleeping in their homes instead of going out to vote - this is what has happened in the last few decades and this is what will happen in 2014 as well.
