dhoni is a great player, and for me, arguably the greatest ODI middle order batsman ever. but tendulkar was a bonafide batting genius. facing the opposition best bowler up front in every innings, sensational record on the biggest stage (the world cup), delivering in some of the biggest games like those against pak in the WC, 96, 2011 semis, etc. and getting india their first big series win in australia since '85 with 117* and 94 in two back to back finals. so many great memories. and he was just spectacular to watch, unique shot-making ability. for me, he is locked in as india's best odi player ever. no disrespect to dhoni though, if i had to make an all time ODI dream team, the first two names i'd pick are dhoni in the middle order and tendulkar as an opener.

No. I agree that based on current performance Gambhir doesn't have very strong case of being in team and that how it should be. My comment was on tendency of dhoni fanboyz to suggest that because of that WC innings he has achieved immortality and that innings single handedly ensures that he is best ever or among the best ever.
Making imaginary statements to defend your absurd logic?

This is one of the reasons why I do not reply seriously to you and most of the people don't (Apart from the fact of your obvious admission that you indulge in these things only for trolling and riling fellow posters and not for discussions) An opener is never a finisher. In no team he is. If an opener needs to play till 50 overs, he will always end up scoring 150+ and that's still a rare score in ODIs. On the other hand, someone at dhoni's position only needs to score 70 to 80 runs to remain not out and 'finsih' things. Two different roles in a ODI team And of course. Dhoni will be better than Sachin at finishing, that's what Dhoni has done throughout his career just as Sachin will be better than Dhoni in opening in ODIs and facing new ball
This! If only people could understand this simple logic.

Well, if you are to intangible factors, then this question has no real answers. As both players have had their effects outside the pitch. And, if one was asked to recall some of India's glory moments? Dhoni would feature a lot more than Sachin. Which is why Dhoni is a greater cricketer of them

As a captain, yes Dhoni would feature more. But, as a batsman, his biggest moment of glory is the WC final(having said that it's the biggest one can achieve). But, as a cricketer, Sachin has had many more glory moments. And don't forget, you are comparing a 24 year career with an 8 year one!

Sachin having played much more matches will likely have more number of wins which also means more number of losses. But simply wins do not qualify or mean glory moments. With Dhoni, there are several occurrences where he has lead the team to glory. When both retire, no one will remember the wins, they will remember the glory and with Dhoni, it's a greater feature.

sachin was the highest scorer in 2011 world cup MOM in semis half century in QF was consistent throughout the tournament and gambhir won us in final. yes dhoni was part of some gllorious moments in indian cricket but so was sachin but atleast sachin performed in those glorious moments

IMO his impact as a player cannot be measured in mere wins or losses.

You are bang right about Sachin but "Gambhir won us the final" is a bit arrogant statement to make.

You do not look at records exclusively to judge a player. If that is used, Sachin is the best. But you look at the overall period and it was under Dhoni where we have blossomed and had a lot of glory. I can think of tons of football names who were actually better players but just because the team had struggled, those players were comparatively seen lower to those who were part of the good times. And it was Dhoni, where lead us to win and be part of it.
