Yet, they haven't been able to work out dates for a Test series between the two sides, which leaves them playing out a bunch of ODIs and Twenty20s. What's more, this and the recent tri-series in the Caribbean, which featured India and Sri Lanka, means the only Tests in West Indies' home season were the ones against a rebuilding Zimbabwe. Pakistan are also in a rebuilding phase after some indifferent recent results. The experience of Younis Khan was dispensed with even before the Champions Trophy, and after the winless campaign in England, they have jettisoned the seasoned trio of Kamran Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Imran Farhat. That doesn't mean they are light on experience though, as the exciting but wildly inconsistent Shahid Afridi makes yet another comeback. Exciting but wildly inconsistent is a phrase that could be applied to plenty of batsmen in the West Indies squad as well. The batting wasn't up to the mark in the recent tri-series and they will be tested again by Pakistan's high-quality bowling attack. While they have several batsmen who can play blinders and take the game away from the opposition, they are short of the sort of batsman who can grind it out in difficult conditions. There were collapses aplenty in the tri-series,something they have to look to arrest this time around. Another blot West Indies will want to erase is their dodgy record at home against Pakistan, having comprehensively lost the previous two series. For that, they will first need the weather to clear up - scattered thunderstorms are predicted on Sunday, and at least light rain is expected through the week. The series also marks the return of international cricket to Guyana after a two-year absence, during which there has been plenty of conflict between the government and the country's cricket board.

England's legendary allrounder Ian Botham was asked after taking a wicket first ball on his Test comeback in 1986. The same question can be asked of another flamboyant cricketer today as Shahid Afridi turned in one of the greatest all-round ODI performances to flatten West Indies in his comeback game. With Pakistan axing a whole host of experienced players in recent months - including Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal - there had been murmurs over whether Afridi's ODI career should have been given yet another lifeline. He's someone who sees himself as a bowling allrounder in recent years, and with no wickets in six previous ODIs, the doubts were justified. Afridi squashed them, and how - a game-transforming half-century and then the second best one-day bowling figures of all time. Even in a career as wildly fluctuating as his, there can be few moments when the turnaround in fortunes is this stark. It is the ability to deliver these truly gobsmacking performances that has earned him a loyal legion of fans, who swear by him even during extended runs of failures. Before he walked in to bat on a drizzly morning in Providence, Pakistan's top order had once again keeled over against the moving ball as Jason Holder delivered a searing new-ball spell of 8-4-8-4. The manner of those dismissals would have been as demoralising for Pakistan's fans as the scoreline, with two top-order batsmen being bowled when looking to leave the ball. Misbah-ul-Haq was playing his usual hold-the-innings-together role scoring at about a run an over, but when Afridi strode out, he was immediately looking to score at a run a ball. Pakistan were 47 for 5 and the team's last recognised batting pair was in the middle, but that didn't prevent Afridi from launching his third delivery for six over long-off. Given his kamikaze style of play, a quick end to his innings wouldn't have surprised. It almost did after he belted another six and a four, but Chris Gayle put down a tough chance at slip. After that, he could take lesser risks despite scoring rapidly as West Indies' bowlers offered several boundary balls. Marlon Samuels offered long hops and full tosses that were dispatched beyond the rope, Darren Sammy was cleverly dinked over the shoulder before his half-volley was pounded through extra cover to bring up the half-century off 35 deliveries. The man who was expected to be the biggest threat, Sunil Narine, was caned out of the attack, taken for 32 in three overs. On a track where the rest of the Pakistan team combined to score 120 off 245, Afridi plundered 76 off 55, showing the insouciance and big-hitting that typifies his batting. Misbah added to his ever-expanding collection of ODI half-centuries as well, on a track which he called one of the toughest he has come across, and his partnership with Afridi underlined how two vastly different styles of batting can both be crucial to the team's cause. Their efforts drove Pakistan to 224, which seemed like a challenging target for West Indies. Twenty minutes into the chase, that seemed a far larger score as West Indies were reduced to 7 for 3, the second lowest score for which they have lost three wickets in ODIs. It began with Mohammad Irfan's swinging, 146kph low full toss that resulted in a golden duck for Johnson Charles in the first over. The pace and bounce of Irfan disconcerted the batsmen, with Darren Bravo the next to go, caught down the leg side. The biggest breakthrough, though, came through a direct hit from Misbah at cover, catching Chris Gayle well short while attempting a single that would have been tough for the quickest of runners, but was hara-kiri for a slow-mover like Gayle. Pakistan knew well the importance of that wicket - Misbah was midway through celebrating the dismissal when he was swamped by his joyous team-mates. Marlon Samuels and Lendl Simmons then cut out all risk, and played ultra-cautious cricket against some top bowling from Pakistan. "Huge pressure is there, huge pressure," wicketkeeper Umar Akmal frequently reminded the batsmen. The biggest strength in the Pakistan line-up is the quality they have across their bowling, with no major weak links. With Simmons and Samuels batting out 15 overs - and scoring only 34 on a turning track - the required-rate had crept above six, but West Indies were still optimistic of winning. Afridi was only brought on as the sixth bowler, but there was no stopping him from being the headliner. In his second over, he had Simmons stumped and Dwayne Bravo lbw next ball. He was showing off his famous starman celebration, and West Indies' chances were evaporating. His mix of legspinners, quick sliders, the occasional googly and even the odd offbreak proved too much for West Indies' batsmen. Kieron Pollard's had three ducks in his previous four ODI innings, and his lack of confidence was apparent, as he holed out to long-off for 3. Not long after, Afridi had Samuels lbw with a delivery that turned in. The big crowds that had turned up in Guyana knew the game was up and headed for the exit. Afridi's five-for came soon after as Kemar Roach handed a simple return catch, and his figures were an unbelievable 6-2-6-5, with every delivery seemingly a wicket-taking one. He didn't strike in the next couple of overs though and was taken out of the attack, before being brought back six overs later as Sammy and Narine somehow survived the other bowlers. They didn't last against Afridi, though, who needed only one over to wrap up the match and consign West Indies to their lowest ever total in a home ODI. Dwayne Bravo's wicket was Afridi's 350th, making him only the eighth bowler, and the third Pakistan bowler after Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, in ODIs to take these many. The only other player to take 300-plus wickets and score 7000-plus runs in ODIs is Sanath Jayasuriya. Afridi has taken a five-wicket haul and hit fifty-plus runs in a match three times in his career. No other player has repeated this feat more than once. The last time this was done in ODIs was also by Afridi, against Sri Lanka, in 2011. This was the 16th instance of a player taking a five-wicket haul and scoring fifty or more runs in the same match. Afridi's bowling figures of 7 for 12 were the second-best in ODIs. The best figures in ODIs belong to Chaminda Vaas, who took 8 for 19 against Zimbabwe in 2001. Afridi's bowling figures in this match are the best for a spinner in ODIs. These figures were also the best for a bowler bowling third change or later in an innings. In terms of runs given, this was Afridi's most economical spell in ODIs in which he has bowled five or more overs. This was Afridi's 30th Man-of-the-Match performance, which equals the number of such awards won by Brian Lara and Aravinda de Silva. Only six players have won more Man-of-the-Match awards, but among active ODI players, only Jacques Kallis, with 32, has won more such awards. Among Pakistan players, Afridi holds the record; Saeed Anwar is next with 28. Afridi's performances in matches in which he's made a return to ODIs (after missing out on one or more series) have been excellent. In eight such matches he averages 46.85 with the bat from seven innings, including four half-centuries. His bowling outshines his batting in these matches: he has taken 23 wickets, including two five-fors, at an average of 10.30 and a strike rate of 15.3. His impact in these matches is reflected in the number of Man-of-the-Match awards he's won in these eight games - four. Afridi's bowling average of 16.87 in the West Indies is the best by a visiting bowler to have bowled in at least ten innings. His strike rate of 24.5 is the third-best for a visiting bowler, with a minimum of ten innings in the West Indies. This was only the eighth instance of West Indies getting bowled out for under 100 runs and only the second at home. The last time West Indies got dismissed for under 100 runs was in February 2011 against Australia at Perth. Misbah-ul-Haq's fifty in the match ranks fourth in the list of slowest fifty-plus scores by Pakistan's batsmen. Javed Miandad's unbeaten 63 from 167 balls against West Indies is the slowest fifty-plus score by a Pakistan batsman. Three of the four slowest fifty-plus scores by Pakistan batsmen have now come against West Indies. This was Chris Gayle's 250th ODI of his career. He hasn't played all of his ODIs for West Indies though. Gayle has represented the ICC World XI in three ODIs. He is three ODIs away from becoming only the third West Indies player, after Brian Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, to play 250 or more ODIs. Jason Holder doubled his tally of ODI wickets in this match. Holder's spell of 4 for 13 bettered his performance in his previous three ODIs.

Also need to have Umar up the order. 230 odd is really a simple target for most teams in modern cricket so no point blaming the bowlers.

Jamshed was dropped for a 22 ball duck and he has himself to blame as he left few wide ones which could have got him a boundary or 2. Akmal could open or come at 3. Hafeez is no good at 3, he can be better down the order & slogging in the deaths. Pakistan lacks a good right hand quick. That Adil guy rated as another ATG from 'you-know-who' seems like another average bowler.
