England strongly reject claims that spinner Graeme Swann tampered with the ball during first Test

THE England and Wales Cricket Board have denied spinner Graeme Swann tampered with the ball during the closing stages of the first Test at Trent Bridge. Dean Jones told Melbourne radio station 3AW footage showing Swann crouching behind an esky and applying spray to his hands "definitely needs to be clarified." An ECB spokeswoman said suggestions Swann had attempted to alter the condition of the ball were erroneous. "The answer to the question is no he wasn't tampering with the ball, all he was doing was drying his hands,†the spokeswoman said. TAMPER Tamper England Strongly Reject Claims That Spinner Graeme Swann Tampered With The Ball Source: Supplied "As you know the umpires check the ball at every break in play and at no stage have any concerns been raised." Jones said clarification was required over exactly what substance Swann was applying to his hands. "In my time we used to spray methylated spirits on our calluses, and that's ok," Jones told 3AW. "But it definitely needs to be clarified what he was spraying. If you noticed (Stuart) Broad gave him a funny look when he did it. "I just wonder why he was doing it discreetly instead of just standing up and spraying away." Meanwhile, Swann has put a spin on villain Stuart Broad's DRS deceit that ignited the first Test `howler' storm at Trent Bridge - inviting claims of hypocrisy. It was Swann who admitted he 'wanted' to kill unheralded Sri Lankan batsman Dilruwan Perera in March last year for failing to walk during a tour match at Premadasa Stadium. Pakistan umpire Aleem Dar, fasting through Ramadan, missed Broad's thick edge off debutant Ashton Agar when on 37 to Michael Clarke at first slip in England's second innings at Trent Bridge. TAMPER Tamper England Strongly Reject Claims That Spinner Graeme Swann Tampered With The Ball Source: Supplied However Swann won't condemn shamed, 58-Test paceman Broad who confused Dar with a poker face and made 65 vital runs in a Test England won by 14 runs. "I think it is very harsh to shine the light just on Broady - there were probably six or seven batsmen who didn't walk at Trent Bridge when they nicked the ball,'' Swann said. Swann noted Australian vice-captain Brad Haddin and skipper Michael Clarke also declined to walk for dismissals in Nottingham proving "virtually no batsmen around the world walk". "I've always said I believe batsmen should walk. But in a high-stakes game like an Ashes Test, it is human nature that people are going to stand their ground and use the argument that umpires are there to makes decisions - so let them do so,'' Swann told The Sun. On England's tour of Sri Lanka Perera merely stood his ground not knowing if a catch had carried to former skipper Andrew Strauss off spearhead James Anderson. Tailender Perera was subjected to prolonged verbal abuse from England opposition incensed by cricket's cheating culture. "I wanted to kill the batsman because he was cheating and was stood next to me with a smug look on his face!'' said Swann of the Perera incident that tainted England's innings and 115-run win in Colombo against the Sri Lankan board XI. "The thing that annoyed me was that the batsman stood there knowing 100 per cent he was out but chose to cheat. He then opened himself up to the level of abuse that was coming to him.'' Yet, Swann believes Broad - old and experienced enough to know better - deserves to be spared rebuff for his actions in the Ashes opener. The premier tweaker's view contrasts with former England skipper Michael Vaughan who predicts Broad will be remembered as a `cheat' while a home Nottingham crowd also jeered the baby faced speedster. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/cricket/england-strongly-reject-claims-that-spinner-graeme-swann-tampered-with-the-ball-during-first-test/story-fni2usfi-1226680584867

Now we all know, Why KP had problems with these guys. All of Swann, Broad, Bell and Trott are similar in nature to Sri Lankans like Sanga, Dilshan ... All are born cheaters.

How the **** has he cheated. He sprayed his hands with something. 1) He's not even the ball cleaner and the ball doesn't get tossed to him during the process. [bowler] - [prior] - [cook] - [bowler[ 2) What substance could he have put on that could have affected the ball, seriously. to change the shape of a ball with a liquid you need either something stupidly cold, something stupidly reactive, or something stupidly acidic. Yes, I'm sure Swann would be rubbing hydrochloric acid solution all over his hands or a group 1 alkaline metal in it's liquid form. This is ridiculous. The above statement is testament to why. People can't stand losing so they whine and whine and whine, ever noticed the pattern that it's only Australia who ever complain about us? That says it all really. And then idiots like above believe in this sort of crap. PS, What has bell even done.

Most of these guys have no right to talk about others about sportsmanship or spirit of the game from here on. They are all a bunch of crooks anyway. Its funny how Poms seem to be the first to talk about spirit of the game as though they are the torch bearers of fair play.

Dean Jones just said that "it needs to be clarified". Your sh!t UK media has gone berserk calling it tampering, cheating etc. So please spare the moral high horse. FYI - any addition of external substance on the ball is not allowed however miniscule it may be.

Everyone these days rubs spit onto the balls so clearly the latter sentence isn't the case. Our media hasn't said anything actually. And I don't define the daily fail, the s*n or the daily star as 'media'.

The laws of cricket are not black or white. Spit is NOT classified as an external substance by the ICC.
Also Dexter' date=' you know as well as I do that had this been the other way around the entire forum would be calling us whingers.[/quote'] Two wrongs do not make a right. You call a spade a spade and a jacka**, a jacka**

The bottomline is that the umpires did not change the ball. that indicates nothing has really happened to the ball.

The umpires did not change the ball during the Tendulkar Mike Denness incident of 2001 either. By the same token, do you believe that the ball change during SL game at CT was an evidence of England ball tampering? One of these must be true.

yes that imo was ball tampering. the curious question would be when in the match did this incident happen? Did many wickets fall in the aftermath of that or not.

Sri Lanka were 199-2 and they went on to make 293-7. England were unhappy because the ball was reverse swinging before the change and did not move after it.

I have a question for you or any English supporter here ,forget for second about this ball tampering issue. Let us talk about other issue of Swann he wanted to kill that poor Srilankan guy for not walking and on the same token he comes out and supports Stuart Broad for not walking why double standards.FYI I dont blame Broad one bit he did what most of the player do now a days. Where I have problem is the double standards England players seem to have. They want other teams and players to uphold spirit of game when it benefits them and when their turn comes to uphold it they seem throw it out of window. Ian bell case is one whole England coaching staff went into third umpire/Dhoni and pleaded for Bell's recall but they strongly endorsed Stuart broad's move. Paul Collingwood when he was captain refused to call Grant Elliot back on that run out but he asked Daniel Vettori to call his appeal back when he was run out.
