Pakistan, Sri Lanka Qualify for World T20 2014

Left-arm spinner Sadia Yousuf's career-best figures of 4 for 9 punched Pakistan's ticket to the Women's World Twenty20 in Bangladesh after a nine-wicket win over Ireland in the first semi-final of the Qualifiers. Pakistan put Ireland in after a wet outfield caused a delayed start , and captain Isobel Joyce lost her middle stump on the fourth ball of the match. A run-out got rid of tournament top-scorer Clare Shillington before Yousuf plundered four wickets in her first three overs to leave Ireland reeling at 32 for 6 after 13 overs. She was on a hat-trick after having both Laura Delany and Elena Tice stumped off the last two balls of the 13th over. She induced Kim Garth's edge off her next ball, but it landed safely. Garth made an unbeaten 38 but the rest of the line-up could not reach double figures as Ireland were dismissed for 65. The openers took Pakistan almost halfway to victory before Garth removed Nahida Khan for 13, but her partner Javeria Khan and Nain Abidi completed the formalities with 35 balls to spare, though heavy rain did interrupt play with Pakistan six runs from victory. Sri Lanka controlled a rain-marred game to become the second team to go through to the T20 finals in Bangladesh, after Netherlands fell short of a revised target of 85 in 9 overs. Having been invited to bat, Sri Lanka made a bright start, scoring at over 10 before Chamari Atapattu was run-out in the third over. Yasoda Mendis and Deepika Rasangika consolidated with a 52-run partnership for the second wicket. Mendis fell in the 10th over but Rasangika's 47 off 50 balls, with four fours ensured Sri Lanka were on course for a healthy total. Two quick wickets brought Eshani Kaushalya to the crease, who struck her third ball for six and kept going. Her 33 off 16 balls pushed Sri Lanka to 152 for 6 in 19 overs when rain arrived. Netherlands' openers began steadily, but Veringmeier's fall paved way for Heather Siegers' wicket six and put them at 39 for 2 in the sixth over, 14 behind the Duckworkth-Lewis par score. They could only manage 9 of the 46 needed in the last 18 balls to give Sri Lanka a comfortable victory. With three teams slated to qualify for the World T20, Ireland and Netherlands still have shot of making it to Bangladesh if they win the third-place play-off match on July 31. A triple-wicket maiden, which included a run-out as well, by Mai Yanagida could not prevent Zimbabwe from progressing to the Shield final of the Qualifiers. Her 4-1-5-4 kept Japan alive, after they had made only 58, until Zimbabwe sealed the game in the 16th over by three wickets. Zimbabwe's bowlers came up with a miserly performance, reducing Japan to 5 for 2 in the third over. Captain Shizuka Miyaji and Kurumi Ota plugged any further wickets from falling with a 28-run stand, but Ota's wicket in the tenth over initiated a collapse and they were all out for 58 as not a single batsman was able to score in double digits. Zimbabwe were 30 for 2 at the start of the ninth over when Yanagida replaced Shizuka Kubota, and her first ball saw Mary-Anne Musonda run-out. The next ball accounted for Chipo Mugeri, before her final two of the over spelled the end of Christabel Chatonzwa and Ashley Burdett. Now at 30 for 6, Nonhlanhla Nyathi and Josephine Nkomo held firm and took Zimbabwe home. Rain hit the second shield semi-final between Thailand and Canada more severely as play was postponed to Tuesday after only 18 overs bowled. Thailand were 92 for 6 having won the toss, with top-scorer Chanida Sutthiruang at the crease on 23 off 17 balls.

For Clarification about the structure of the tournament. IND, AUS, SAF, ENG, NZL, WI, BAN have already qualified for this tournament to be held alongside the Mens WT20 in Bangladesh from March 16th next year.

Three teams will progress to the 2014 Women's World Twenty20 from the Qualifiers after the ICC announced a revised schedule for the tournament, which begins in Dublin on July 23. According the previous format, only the winner of the qualifying competition would progress to the 2014 finals, but following a decision made at the ICC annual conference in London last month, the runner-up and the winner of the playoff for third place will also qualify for the tournament in Bangladesh, taking the total number of participants to ten. As a result of the changed qualification structure, the originally intended Super Four stage will be replaced with two semi-finals. The ICC said the decision to expand the qualification process was part of a continued promotion and support of women's cricket, with the recently announced event cycle including four World T20 events and two World Cups between 2015 and 2023. The three teams from the Qualifiers will join Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, South Africa and West Indies for the World T20, which begins on March 16 and will take place alongside the men's event. Canada, Ireland, Japan, Netherlands, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Zimbabwe are the eight teams participating in the Qualifiers.

Sad News ... Rain forces the Final Match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka to Day 2 after Pakistan scored 112 of their 20 overs. Sri Lanka will bat tomorrow. Also, both the games for 3rd place playoffs ... both for Trophy 3rd place and for shield 3rd place will be played tomorrow due to rain.

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars (Aussie Women) depart for Women's Ashes

This will be the first Women’s Ashes Series to adopt the new points system that takes into account performances in the three formats of the game. The winner of the Women’s Ashes will be the team who wins the most points across the one Test, three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars captain Jodie Fields said she was looking forward to taking on traditional rivals England on their home turf. “Cricket contests between Australia and England have a special place in the hearts and minds of the players and the public. To pull on a Baggy Green and play Test cricket for Australia is a great honour and something all players strive for,†Fields said “Our squad has a good mixture of youth and experience and the tour will provide an opportunity for players to compete across the three formats of the game. “We are looking forward to a competitive series against England and we will do everything in our power to retain the Women’s Ashes.†The Cricket Australia Women’s National Selection Panel (WNSP) today advised that Gemma Triscari has been added to the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad for the Women’s Ashes Series in England. Commenting on the decision, WNSP Chair Julie Savage said: “Gemma has been added to the squad so that we have adequate cover for our pace bowlers during the early part of the tour.†The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars are the current Ashes holders, having reclaimed the trophy in Sydney in 2011. Of the 18 Women’s Ashes Series that have been played since its inception in 1934-35, Australia have won seven, England have won four and seven series have been drawn. The Player-of-the-Series will be awarded the Peden-Archdale Medal, which is named after the two captains in the first women’s Test between Australia and England in 1934-35, namely Margaret Peden (Australia) and Betty Archdale (England). The Medal was first awarded in the 1999-2000 series. Former Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars all-rounder Lisa Sthalekar will provide expert analysis throughout the series for

Ireland hold nerve in last ball finish to seal World T20 berth

Ireland booked their berth in the 2014 World Twenty20 by securing a two-run win against Netherlands in a closely fought third-place playoff at the YMCA Cricket Club in Dublin. The match, pushed to a reserve day due to heavy rains, went down to the last ball. Netherlands, chasing 137, needed a four to win, but Marloes Bratt could only parry straight down to long-on for a single. As a result of the victory, Ireland will join Sri Lanka and Pakistan in next year's 10-team showpiece T20 event in Bangladesh. Ireland, put in to bat by Netherlands, had got off to a shaky start after opener Clare Shillington was caught behind by wicketkeeper Miranda Veringmeier off Braat in the first over. Ireland however hit back with an unbeaten 64-ball 72 from Isobel Joyce. Joyce struck six fours during her innings and put up a crucial 80-run second-wicket stand with Kim Garth to help take Ireland to 136 for 5 in 20 overs. Netherlands lost Veringmeier and Tessa van der Gun early in the chase, but recovered through a 53-run partnership for the third wicket between Helmien Rambaldo and Heather Siegers. Rambaldo scored 58 off 54 balls, with three fours, but Ireland managed to keep Netherland's scoring rate from racing. Siegers was eventually run-out for 29, as Netherlands, facing an ever-increasing required-rate, needed 12 off the last over. Rambaldo remained at the crease, but failed to find a boundary, as seamer Laura Delany held her nerve in the final over to seal the win for Ireland.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan share the World T20 2014 Qualifier Title

Sri Lanka and Pakistan will share the Women's World Twenty20 Qualifiers title, after rain prematurely ended the qualifier final at the YMCA Cricket Club in Dublin. However, for ranking purposes, Sri Lanka finish the tournament as No. 1 as they had a better net run rate. Both teams had already booked their berths in the Women's World T20 in Bangladesh next year after beating Netherlands and Ireland in the semi-finals respectively. Sri Lanka, electing to field, had restricted Pakistan to 112 in 20 overs, but as the rain began to pour down, the umpires had no choice but to postpone the final to a reserve day. Another pitch inspection in the morning of the reserve day ruled the outfield to be far too wet to play on, and the match was called off.

NEPALI AND THAI WOMEN TO PLAY IN SRI LANKA ON ACC SCHOLARSHIPS

Four of Nepal’s and Thailand’s women cricketers are being sent by the ACC to play Division 1 cricket in Sri Lanka in August. “It’s a great opportunity for them to develop and knowing the set-up in Sri Lanka I am sure that they will benefit from being there,” says ACC Development Manager Bandula Warnapura. The cricketers funded by the ACC to Sri Lanka are Roshani Bohara and Rubina Chhetri of Nepal and Nattaya Boochatham and Sornnarin Tippoch of Thailand. The cricketers were chosen on the basis of performance in the 2013 ACC Women’s Championship as well as their ability to inspire their team-mates on their return back to their countries for the foreseeable future. Rubina Chhetry and Sorrnanin Tippoch are captains of their respective countries and Miss Boochatham and Miss Tippoch are already ACC-certified Level II coaches. The Nepali and Thai women will play for the Palink Sports Club (Palians), based in Colombo, in Sri Lanka Cricket’s 50-over Division 1 Women’s League. Under the tournament rules only two foreign players can be fielded by a side at one time so they will play in rotation; “the important thing is not only match play but exposure to a full-international set-up, a country where cricket is part of the national culture, one where they will eat, drink and train with other cricketers,” says the ACC Development Manager. “The Palians have been very kind in offering their facilities and hospitality in Colombo to our visitors,” he adds. Palitha Gunasekera, Chairman/President of the Palink School of Cricket was a schoolboy contemporary of the ACC Development Manager as well as being a team-mate of his for Nomads in Sri Lanka. The Nepali and Thai girls (the Thais after completing their Shield-winning trip to Ireland for the Women’s World Twenty20 Qualifiers) reach Colombo on August 10, prior to starting the Sri Lanka season on the 20th. They will be on the island for a month. The ACC is also proposing to work with the Asian Test-playing countries on tours in 2014 for the top Associates as well as Umpiring Scholarships.

Pak women's cricket team 'progressing well'

The team manager of the Pakistani women's cricket team has backed the side, saying that it is 'progressing well' following the side's sharing the ICC Women's World Twenty20 Qualifier title with Sri Lanka in Ireland. According to the Express Tribune, the squad remained unbeaten in the event and booked their berth in next year's World Twenty20 in Bangladesh by reaching the final, which was washed out due to rain. The report further said that the team also leveled their Twenty20 series with England besides defeating England Academy and Ireland earlier on the marathon tour. Defining the tour as 'highly constructive' for Pakistan, team manager Ayesha Ashar said the team's performance in the qualifier was helped by their hard work, adding that reaching the finals without losing any game proved that the team is progressing well. Ashar further said that the Pakistani women cricketers have started entering slots of the top ten players according to the Twenty20 rankings, which placed all-rounder Bismah Marof at the sixth place and Sadia Yousuf at the fifth bowler position. According to Ashar, beating England in a T20 game had lifted the Pakistani team's morale given that England is a high-profile side, adding that that the tour was a confidence boosting assignment as the team faced different opponents during the tour, which gave them valuable experience. However, Ashar said that she was disappointed due to the abandoned final, adding that it was unfortunate that the game could not be finished as Pakistan had become the favourites to win the final after scoring 112. Meanwhile, Ashar commended the team's former batting consultant Basit Ali, who resigned after the tour's completion, for his effort towards the side, saying that Ali worked hard with the team like the rest of the coaching staff. Ashar further said that the presence of an individual with heavy credentials like Ali made a vast difference to the team, adding that Ali got ample opportunity to succeed in raising the quality of the side.
