Lord Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 He does not have the hunger anymore. Its good for him to retire with a great record. how do we know that?
rkt.india Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 yes but from a SA pov, what would you rather do? Face a fresh Steyn Morkel and Philander with the new ball? or face the old ball batting in the middle order? As things stand india's number 6 is not sealed. It could be anybody. I will play a youngster who can improve rather than a struggling unreliable senior who may not have much time ahead.
CG Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 how do we know that? Did u not see him field in the last two series. He was unable to concentrate and was laughing after dropping catches. He is 35 perfect time to call it a day.
G_B_ Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I will play a youngster who can improve rather than a struggling unreliable senior who may not have much time ahead. dude you will play a youngster fine. But surely Viru's best bet is to bat in the middle order for Delhi in the ranjis. Make lots of runs and hope to force your way back into the side in the middle order. Lets assume Viru makes runs for Delhi opening. That still means IMO he will be exposed big style opening in SA. We all know how important the new ball will be in SA. That will be a permanent end to his career. If he is not selected for SA and has a strong ranji season there will be calls to bring him back for the next tour if our batsman fail.

Thing about the bold is that he is not going to get spinners in SA whether he opens or bats in middle order.
rkt.india Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I might be inclined to think that he might have undergone his eye treatment so he has declined their offer.
G_B_ Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Thing about the bold is that he is not going to get spinners in SA whether he opens or bats in middle order. yeah but he will get to bat against the old ball or face the ball when its abouut 20 plus overs old in many innings. There is also a good chance he will face a spinner. Robin Peterson played all the tests v Pakistan and should play the games v India as well. Especially in Cape Town. With Kallis in the side SA have the option of 4 pacers. Peterson himself is a very handy batsman down the order and has played cruical innings before.
G_B_ Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 and there you go http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/averages/batting_bowling_by_team.html?id=7393;team=3;type=series Peterson bowled 73 overs in 3 tests. That included Pakistan being rolled over for 49 where he did not bowl a single ball in that innings and in innings defeat. So he has 73 overs in 4 innings. So its wrong to say viru if played in the middle order wont face any spin

In SA, even old ball will seam, but in India, even new ball does not and he failed. A guy who could not score runs in India, apart from that first Ahmedabad test, you hope he will score in SA.
G_B_ Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 In SA' date=' even old ball will seam, but in India, even new ball does not and he failed. What his plan is to get into team India. Successful or not is another issue. I personally want a youngster (seems to be Rohit atm) to bat at 6. But IMO SA will induct a spinner. Robin Pterson as a spinning all rounder

So its wrong to say viru if played in the middle order wont face any spin He needs to change his game. He gets out on spinners a lot nowadays most often trying to dominate them which he cannot do anymore that consistently and then he is not going to face too many spinners in SA. IMO, he needs to change his game like SRT did. He can no longer play like a younger Sehwag hitting them at will. If he wants to play test cricket, he needs to start playing within himself by tightening his defense and not playing loosely.

They will have Peterchand, but he will mostly only ball if we get a big score then they will use him for negative tactics bowling in rough from over the wicket. If we don't then they are going to rotate their pacers and he will be used sparingly here and there.

I doubt he can add the defence needed while opening. I doubt he has the reflexes
The Outsider Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 that to be fair is his best chance. I think he will still open in the T20s. But the tests he will drop down the order. will be interesting to see what happens at Delhi ranji this season. Delhi do have Chand who is an opener. They will also have GG. So Sehwag can play in the middle order if he wants. Sehwag has never, barring the odd innings here or there, opened for Delhi anyways.
The Outsider Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 so where does he play for Delhi? Usually at 3/4. EDIT: Chopra and Gambhir used to be the regular Delhi openers and if one of them was not available, he would open.
CG Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 but he was always like that no?even when he was scoring runs?its not like its anything new He always was a safe catcher in slips and gully. But he never looked so disinterested in the field as he did in the last two series.
Lord Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 He always was a safe catcher in slips and gully. But he never looked so disinterested in the field as he did in the last two series. he was always laidback. He didnt use to field in the slips that much since Dravid and Laxman were there.his eyesight maybe going too but I doubt the attitude is anything new
G_B_ Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Usually at 3/4. digging further As things stand as per this link. Viru has played 1 ranji match in the last 4 years. One innings he opened and the other he came at 6 http://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/7/7744/Ranji_Trophy_Matches.html
