Your First memories of SRT

:(( Sad day today for all Indian fans....If you are an Indian,You are either a bhakt or you are a converted hater who was a bhakt at some point of your life. Anyways that being said,This is a thread to celebrate SRT on what is a very emotional day for every cricket fan. Now let me tell you about my first memory of SRT,There was a lot of Buzz about this 16 year old around 89-90 and these were the days of DoorDarshan telecasts.... I was a 9 year old and just like every kid of my age was ,around that time I was a huge Kapil Dev fan and dreamt of being the next Kapil dev. I did not get to see him against Pak but obviously heard a lot of buzz going around...Surely he can't be better than Kapil dev can he? I mean Manjrekar was the best batsman in India at that time and he was boring to watch, and surely a 16 year old cannot be that good even if he was as good as Manjrekar what's the big deal Then came 1990-I was 10 and still only the Buzz but no real sighting of a mortal who would later be revealed to be a cricketing incarnation of God ....I beleive this was a period when India did the dual tour of NZL/England......and Thanks to our beloved DD,still no real sighting of the boy wonder whose talk was getting stronger everywhere. Then finally came Sharjah-91....First actual sighting-My 3 year wait was over......This was the tournament of Aaquib Javed....Saw him in a couple of innings here and there and thought....this kids A-ight...He ain't no Kapil dev....Remembered the tournament more for Aaquib Javed 7 wicket haul and yet another Sharjah heartbreak. So still didn't get the buzz around this kid and then came my first actual match ,watching the kid who would go on to become the master blaster .The SA return to international cricket series....The match at Eden Gardens.Lot of memories from that game. The 'Wessels-Cook-Rice' joke,Everyone underestimating S.A and all of a sudden we saw the emergence of the white lightning ripping through the Indian top order a sight we would see time and time again but the man that stood out was the man who would go on to be my hero for rest of my youth...Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. I was blessed that my first real sighting was SRT battling another great which would become a staple of the rest of my life. Sorry for the quickly puttogether tribute...Please feel free to share your own first memories

I was at the ground for that SA match - my first match at a stadium. I still remember the whole match almost - how Donald was picking a wicket off the 5th ball of every over, the heroic innings Sachin played and what a gutsy debut Pravin Amre made remaining not out till the end taking India to victory. Manjrekar used to be my favourite cricketer then and he did become the Man of the Series. :-)

Yeah, I remember he hit a 4 off the second last ball of the 50th over to reach his century. And then SA shocked everyone by chasing it down thanks to Peter Kirsten I think. 1992 WC was the defining tournament; I started believing in SRT from that tournament onwards. Everyone sucked in that, and he was standing like a colossus in the team. Before that I thought SRT was all hype, and was anyway too young to realize the aesthetics of cricket and how he stood out.

To be honest, the SA series and the Sharjah series before that was the time when I started following cricket seriously. But I somehow cannot recollect this match (Kapil singles, SRT blasting wala). What I do remember is the B & H series where we had to wake up at around 2:30 am to catch the matches. I still remember that match where Azhar got run out because of Sachin and kept turning back and staring at him while walking back towards the pavilion with a look that suggested - 'Mofo, you come back, and see what I do to you for screwing me over' And Sachin had this helpless look on his face suggesting - 'I am sorry Boss, galti ho gayi, I am sooo sorry, Please don't drop me' types. I remember Sachin did score a 50 in that match later, while others, as usual sucked.

I guess so. DD was the only channel those days. I have a clear recollection of Krishnamachari Srikant attempting to imitate Sachin and hoist Qudir for a straight six. He danced down the track and completely lost the turning ball and had to make it back to the crease to stop the stumping. Sachin on the other hand, was furiously hitting the ball. That was the beginning of my love affair with the game.

That series was telecast. I was playing marbles in the ground, when the neighbour came and told some of us that this 16-year-old was hitting sixes. I was winning, so I didn't care much about all that; I needed to win more marbles. When I finally went, Sachin was batting with a 6 to be scored off the final ball of the match.

I remember that Azhar catch too in the slips. Hilarious low scoring match that was. It might be 4:30 am, I guess I am confusing it with the 1990 football world cup.
