Which all-time great cricketers were better one day cricketers than test cricketers

Recommended Posts

It is sad that great cricketers of the past did not or could hardly exhibit their prowess in one day Cricket.Since the game originated there have been some all-time great cricketers whose one day international performances have statistically eclipsed those in test matches or been neck to neck.Viv Richards,Javed Miandad,Gordon Greenidge,Wasim Akram ,Desmond Haynes,Kapil Dev,Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are ideal examples. In their day I feel this list of cricketers exhibited greater superiority over their contemporaries in the one day version than the test version.Wasim Akram was the best one day all-rounder with Kapil Dev of all time,Wasim Akram the best one day pace bowler of all and Viv Richards and Sachin Tendulkar the outstandingly best one day batsmen of their day. Overall it is hard to ***** whether morally the likes of Kapil ,Viv Richards,Wasim Akram or Sachin Tendulkar were better in the one day format.Wasim Akram's creative genius and Sachin Tendulkars mastery of all components of the game would be more suited to test cricket. In contrast Viv Richards ,Dhoni's Kapil Dev's or even Adam Gichrist's ability to batter a bowling attack may have been more suited to the one day game where often the gas has to be stepped on from the very word go.For Greenidge ,Clive Lloyd and Miandad I would give a draw as both could be equally resolute in defence and defiant in agression. One batsman who to me was definitely a better one day batsmen was Zaheer Abbas, who to me was only behind Viv Richards and Tendulkar.Similar would be the case of Desmond Haynes. In some ways it is strange to explain Sachin's greater domination of one day cricket than test cricket.Desmond Haynes was freak in one day Cricket with his ability to improvize. In assessing a cricketers overall greatness I question the combining of test cricket with one day Cricket. In that light the greatness of Dennis Lilleee and Malcolm Marshal would be undermined or that of Sunil Gavaskar or Len Hutton. Personally I feel test cricket has to be given greater consideration and I question the combining of one day performances.I would love readers views on this. The following is my list of great cricketers who were statistically better in one day cricket than test cricket. 1.Sachin Tendulkar 2.Viv Richards 3.Wasim Akram 4.Kapil Dev 5.Zaheer Abbas 6.Desmond Haynes 7.Javed Miandad 8.Gordon Greenidge 9.Mahendra Singh Dhoni 10.Clive Lloyd

Dean Jones wasn't an ATG, but still very good - reasonable though not exceptional test bat, but in his prime he absolutely KILLED it in ODIs. The roar from the MCG crowd whenever he came out to bat in ODIs will stay with me for a long time.
