As far as openers are concerned Gavaskar' date=' Grame Smith, Greenidge, Haynes, Hayden and Anwar seem like the only candidates to me. I may be missing someone though. But i think its best to open with someone who is used to opening in this format of the game[/quote'] anwar?? lol

Hmm... Not necessarily. Steyn, Akram both made my side, of your three I would only consider Marshall to replace either of those. Steyn right arm pace and outswing, Akram left arm pace bit of variety and the most skilled paceman with the old ball. Ive gone for a 5 man attack with Imran the allrounder and captain, Steyn, Akram and two spinners in Warne and Murali (surprisingly the only one to go two spinners I think, but think it gives my attack most balance) Hadlee is the other strong contender, in fact thinking about it I may take Hadlee in Steyns place and give the batting a bit more depth. I have not got either Sobers or Kallis and feel I should.. :hmmm: Gavaskar G Smith V Richards S Tendulkar B Lara A Gilchrist Imran Khan W Akram S Warne M Muralitharan D Steyn
How graeme smith can be a opener for worldXI when he is a bunny of zaheer khan :hehe:

Changing my team Sunil Gavaskar Graeme Smith Ricky Ponting Brian Lara Allan Border - CAPTAIN Viv Richards Jacques Kallis Ian Healy - WICKET KEEPER Shane Warne Glenn McGrath Curtly Ambrose Reasoning: Gavaskar - The opener that scored that basically took on the Windies in one of their peaks and scored tons against them Smith - Really smart batsman, great technique, his average doesn't show how good he was. He was a run making machine that could convert. Lefty and when he scores a ton, he doesn't lose Ponting - Ponting is a beast batsman not as good as Tendulkar but he brings fielding and energy into the field and makes people want to play with him. Lara - He makes granddaddy hundreds and I just rate him over a lot of players. Plus I needed a lefty in their as well Border - Now the thing is that he carried a really **** Aussie side but he had to captain them, he was just one of the most underrated players you'll ever see and he played 144 straight test matches. Richards - Can slaughter bowlers just like that, he had amazing hands and technique to suit destroying oppositions and he is a handy bowler Kallis - Top tier allrounder, can steady the ship...I should put him ahead of Richards in the batting lineup but I would need his bowling, line and length and can swing it Healy - I have enough batting, I want the greatest keeper that I've seen and that is Ian Healy. Just watch him when Warne used to spin it a lot, it is like he and Warne/Other Spinners had this link. Can score runs as well Warne - The best spinner ever, great fielding, smart thinker as he reads the game well. Can bat as well McGrath - Nagging line and length and knew how to work a batsman, he would bowl the same thing over and over. Ambrose - He can kill and scare the **** out of people Omissions - Tendulkar - Reason? Honestly other than batting, he doesn't bring much into a team compared to Ponting or Border (who is my captain). Yeah he is a way better batsman but his fielding is eh and I have too many right handers as it is and he doesn't bring the same energy as both players. That's my honest opinion Akram and Miandad - Akram is because I don't want to stack my team with bowling. McGrath, Ambrose and Kallis can bowl pace and Warne for spin. If I need part timers I have Chappell, Gavaskar could bowl somewhat and Viv Pollock - Line and Length but McGrath is better Allrounders - I want a stacked batting side, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan and Hadlee were okay batsman (Kallis is a lot better) and bowling wise McGrath does the job Kallis and Ambrose Sobers - Didn't make his debut in the 70's Gilchrist - I've seen him keep and it is amazing but batting wise I'm fine and Healy is just a better glovesman. YES I know I didn't put Tendulkar but it is not because of his batting at all or any bias against him. Just to be assured

anwar?? lol
He was a good batsman. Notice that i did not actually pick him, i picked Haynes and Gavaskar. All i stated was that he was a candidate. He averaged nearly 60 vs Australia in tests, and 47 in Australia. Like most sub continent batsmen, he struggled in South Africa but still managed one match winning century over there. I did not pick him but it isn't absurd to mention him.

I think its best to go in with 5 bowlers. (4 quicks and a spinner). I don't think there is any need for 7 batsmen, 6 proper batsmen and 5 bowlers will do. Of course the batting of the bowlers can also be taken into consideration. That's why i picked guys like Imran, Marshall, and Wasim because they could hold a bat. I also think a left hander like Wasim brings more variety into the attack and i am surprised more people haven't picked him An test xi like this would be going up against other great test xi's, therefore batting depth is important. You don't need 7 batsmen, but you do need 6 batsmen and atleast 3 bowlers who can bat fairly well. My team: 1. Gavaskar 2. Haynes 3. Richards 4. Tendulkar 5. Lara 6. Gilchrist 7. Imran 8. Wasim 9. Marshall 10.Warne 11.Steyn/Hadlee A right left opening batsman combination can slightly disrupt the bowlers rhythm. Gavaskar had strong defense and could score plus help take the shine of the ball. Haynes was a quality opener although i can see a case for Smith, Greenidge etc. Richards was the most destructive and probably the best against fast bowling. Tendulkar and Lara were excellent vs spin (and pretty darn good vs pace bowling to). Plus Lara could play well under intense pressure (the 153 vs Aus comes to mind). Gilchrist is a no brainer Imran was a great leader and excellent bowler who could also contribute with the bat. Wasim was a leftie which in itself is an advantage, he was the most versatile bowler and on his day he had more deliveries to destroy the batsmen. Slightly less consistent than say Mcgrath or Ambrose but his superior batting and versatility gives him an edge. Marshall is a no brainer. Could skid the ball at a high pace. Like Imran and Wasim, he could bat fairly well. Warne again is a no brainier. Steyn or Hadlee would be my final pick. Steyn is very quick with an outstanding outswinger. Hadlee was arguably just as good a bowler but not as quick as Dale (though a better batsmen). You could pick either of them

Sunil Gavaskar Best Opener since 1970 was a run machine and could play anyone anywhere Gordon Greenidge Best attacking opener since 1970 who could player play anywhere and also had sound defense. Viv Richards best attacking batsmen since 1970 Sachin tendulkar Best compiler of runs since 1970 Greg Chappell (Captain by default) Only player who dominated WI fast bowlers even if it was for one series. Brian Lara the lone left hander Adam Gilchrist Best WK batsman and also not a shabby keeper. Shane Warne Best attacking Spinner since 1970 Wasim Akram best Left Arm fast since 1970 Malcolm Marshall Best Pace bowler since 1970 Glenn Mcgrath Best bowler who had knack of taking out best batsmen of the other team and could bowl anywhere. 12th Man Richard Hadlee he would be replacing any of the batsmen when extra bowler is needed. Now to people who miss out Ricky Ponting he was greatest winner since 1970 but others in team had little extra in them. He is unlucky to miss out. Sobers I did not consider because he is more 1960s player. Kallis He is the greatest all rounder since 1970 Sanga He is whiny but he is awesome batsman and WK to boot. Murali Greatest wicket taker since 1970 but I wanted all the bowlers in the team with no issues with their actions. Dale Steyn His bad odi record goes against him. All the 1980s WI Fast bowlers These bowlers who can replace any bowler in the team and Team would not miss a beat. last is overrated Imran who the neighbors think is a great fricking all rounder but was a tail ender who could bat for majority of his career and was bowler of merit for just 28 tests in middle of his 88 tests.(30+28+30) . Even as bowler it is totally unknown how he would have turned out if not for bottle tops and home cooked umpires.

Lol Richard Hadlee knows a thing or two about cricket and he rates Imran as the best all rounder of the 80's. Its perfectly fine if you don't want him in your team though. But its not just your neighbors who consider him a great, plenty of people like Hadlee to as well.

Imran said Inzi was best batsmen of fast bowling and better match winner than sachin , is that true statement. If you ask even Inzi he would laugh at that statement. I don't give rats ass to what Hadlee said because that statement about Imran being best all rounder in 1980s is simply not true.

well its not just Hadlee, Imran is widely considered one of the best all rounders ever outside of Pakistan too. Whereas very few consider Inzi a good player of fast bowling we'll just agree to disagree. Let's leave it as it is

why should we consider steyn's one day record while discussing the ATG world test X1?brian lara and gavaskar would also miss out going by that

My XI for 1970 to current in tests: S.Gavaskar G.Boycott IVA Richards Sachin Tendulkar Brian Lara Steve Waugh Adam Gillchrist Wasim Akram Malcolm Marshall Shane Warne Glenn McGrath

I am a bit intrigued that very few are picking Hayden as an opener. He averaged 50.7 in 103 tests at a strike rate of 60. Scored 30 centuries with a highest of 380. Could play against both pace and spin. Not easy to ignore " Mat the Bat the Run Machine " as he was called in his early days as a cricketer. A devastating batsman and fierce competitor who played to win. His fast scoring ability would make him a perfect complement for Gavaskar and make it easy to win test matches. Plus he was a left handed power hitter. Boycott or Haynes opening with Sunny would make the opening very slow and not in keeping with modern cricket.

Greg struggled quite a bit against the Windies. He struggled against the short ball which they bowled a lot.

Hayden is not my pick because I happened to see the series where Hayden was brutally exposed by Ambrose and Walsh. Hayden came to prominence just after the retirement of Wasim,Waqar, Donald, Ambrose,Walsh- pretty much the crème of the crop of top level fast bowling. They all retired or faded by 2000-2001 and Hayden's rise was *that* series in 2001 vs India. Then he made his hay in an era where fast bowling has been at one of its lowest ebbs, with pretty much one great fast bowler operating- Dale Steyn and even Steyn was not around till 2007 or so. Hayden's technique too is completely unsuited to facing extreme quality pace bowling: he was the only opener I've seen stick around who was instinctively a front foot player than a backfoot one. Even Sehwag, who is exceptionally strong on front foot play, is far far more sound than Hayden on the back foot and would make my lineup before Hayden. So Hayden, I see as making a whole bunch of cheap and easy runs while being easy meat for great fast bowling. Its the same reason I don't include Kallis in ATG category: he may have the stats but Kallis barely averaged 40 when ATG bowlers were around and whats the point of being picked for an ATG lineup if you cant face up to ATG bowling: an alltime XI does operate under the implicit assumption that it will be pitted against another alltime XI of high calibre.
