I have been visiting a small restaurant frequently this month. It is frequented by the most colourful ensemble of characters I've ever come upon. Each person has a nickname based on their distinguishing attribute. The Aashiq When he is not on the phone begging someone to return the 7 crores he had lent them, he is romancing a particularly ruthless lady. One particular incident is burned in my memory. To his girl on the phone: haan jaan, kidhar ho? ... Dahisar mein? ... Arre bohot door hai... Tumhari yaad mein marey jaa raha hoon... acha tou baad mein phone karta hoon... He redials... "Haan shukla ji, Ram Ram!" The Tharki Buddha This is an old man of seven decades, his white hair greying with age, who has a soft spot for women of the dark corners. Everytime he is with a new set of eager accomplices, mostly out of towners - starry-eyed youngsters looking for a little bit of diamond dust in the bylanes of Bollywood - who hang on to his loose-lipped lascivous lisp. He once confided in me, recognizing me as a regular, at the wash-basin, "Sab harami hain. Har koi apni aukat ke hisab se pel ke jaata hai." His descriptions of his favourite concubines would turn a pornstar beetred, on the other hand, he could walk in to any advertising agency just for his ability to describe women's clothes. The braggart He knows Radhe Ma, he knows Anupam Kher, he knows Joy Mukherjee, he knows Rahul Bajaj and the Thakereys. Can you lend him 200 rupees till next week? Sent from my prosthetic in-body mobile device.
