Indian deputy consul general arrested in US on visa fraud charges

Unlikely. Why would she demand a normal Indian passport so that she can get work in the US. She is just some greedy woman who has been used by some assortment of NGOs in connivance with the DA and the State Dept to humiliate India. India needs to mete out the same treatment to a similar senior US consular officer. Btw Bharara's language in his statement on this case indicates his active involvement in orchestrating this disgusting episode.
Who would gain anything out of this saga? NGOs/State Dept? India is not a big country like Russia, China, or even Cuba for US agencies to go after. It will only serve the political aspirations of the idiot DA.

And it is well known that there is a network of NGOs that include Indians, which thrive on these sorts of cases which have also occurred in the past.

There is a story doing rounds that India's backing of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh is what have ruffled feathers in USA.

Devyani Khobragade arrest case: John Kerry calls India's National Security Advisor, voices 'regret'

"As a father of two daughters about the same age as Devyani Khobragade, the Secretary empathizes with the sensitivities we are hearing from India about the events that unfolded after Ms. Khobragade's arrest," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said after the telephonic conversation between Mr Kerry and Mr Menon.

Even if that is the case - why will US go after a consular diplomat to intimidate India. Makes no sense at all. This is more likely a case of a DA over reach.

DA over reach and the maid's family gets a visa and paid trip to USA?Really? They cant touch Embassy staff or UN mission staffs. This maid was looking for some assistance so making her the victim they framed Devyani to try and send a message to India. They thought that India is an Asian country so it will just whimper and say nothing. They forgot that most of the political spectrum arent USA fans and that USA has had close relations with India for only a decade or so and that Indians are massively and sometimes overly *****y about the PRIDE issue. Also India has since independence maintained a very independent foreign policy which will not bend according to US whims and fancies.Massive mistake by policy makers in USA.Massive Mistake.

i dont know what sources you have but as per the wiki' date=' she didnt return to India and stayed in the US illegally.[/quote'] I am talking about her family. They got US visas and reached NY on 10th December and Devyani was arrested on 12th DEC.Her Husband was a driver with Mozambique embassy and her father in law worked as a gardner in US embassy and her mother in law worked as maid for someone at the US embassy.Who paid for their tickets???How did US issue visas to them when India had warned them of possible illegal immigration by the maid. The Indian FM has asked that on what basis the maid and her family are in US and despite several complaints by Indian embassy why no action has been taken againist her and the US state department spokesperson has conceded that US authorities are in contact with the maid.

The US will express regret (and not apologize) and this controversy will blow over and the diplomat recalled. In Election season, no party can seen to be week on such issues

I don't get US's holier-than-thou stance on diplomats. One of their diplomats ran over two people in Pakistan and got away. Another embassy employee shot two people in broad daylight and again got away with it.
That country has been acting that way for a long time now. America is a big powerful bully. They believe they are superior to every other country. It seems the whole case has been systematically manufactured after she refused to give in to the maid's blackmail. It goes back as far as July. If things turn out as India claims, it will be very embarrassing for the US.

Raymond Davis didn't get away - he was convicted in Pakistan court. The deceased family agreed to take "blood money" and hence, he was allowed to leave.
