Secondly, your arguments against Devyani too is laughable at best with you parroting the same lines even though most 'facts' you cite have proven to be false or murky at best

[/quote'] It is embarassing to try and explain to an adult like you what disposable income means and what the disposable income budget of university students tend to be in North America, especially to one so severely handicapped in basic comprehension like you.

In the Indian court, DK has registered a case of extortion for asking for more money etc. The first one is what they can prove with documents, and DK would have had to pay some money out. Either way, DK is one the losing side morally for having a plush job in Manhattan with US citizen of a husband, still went to get a Indian maid and didn't pay her properly. Victim's statements are evidence and I am sure they can get corroboration.

I'll hire one yesterday. Has to be able to produce proper documents and work authorization. Day care itself is $1200 a month for 5 days a week. Here I am shelling out that kind of money and having to cook, clean the house, doing the laundry and dishes when for a few dollars more I could have been spending that time with my son, reading, or posting some more gems on ICF.

The ground reality is that you cannot get a full time live in maid, with proper visa and work authorization, in NJ for less than $2500 a month, forget about NYC. I've personally tried till $2000 and gave up, because $2000 is already a major hit on my budget. Devyani was paying way below that.

That Muloghonto fruit loop claims that one can live quite comfortably on a disposable income of three dollars per hour in NYC. The absolute heights of delusion if there was anyway. He was also blabbering some nonsense about how one can afford Yale - one of the most expensive universities in the world - and still get by on less than three dollars per hour. When asked to quantify such numbers, he just pulled out random facts out of his sphincter.

But people should also look at the financial status of the diplomats family and the nature/amount of work that the maid would be doing. Imagine a rich Indian guy in Mumbai, having free govt. house, 2 little children and a wife who is a consul general of Congo. She brings full-time maid for 7 days a week from congo at Rs 2500/- per month. India says there's gonna be action on the Consul General so she presents Congo court orders saying that the maid cant file a case in india. Would INDIANS themselves mind the arrest of such a consul general?

After food, rent, medicare and tuition r paid for, which is exactly richards situation, 90% of students on north america have far less disposable income. And thats a fact. Indians and employees from many countries actually still work at <$9.75 per hour. At $9.75 per hr, they will simply become unaffordable for their countries. For ex., embassy and consular staff, drivers etc. Workers typically save money when working in USA and send it to India. Visa fraud in itself is not that big a deal imo since she had *some* special privileges due to her post but when one looks at overall scenario that I've tried to give in last few posts, Devyani comes across as wrong(immoral and exploitative).

But the benefit of the doubt should go to defendant. there isnt enough to pronounce criminally guilty. I dont think I am missing much- correct me if I am wrong but I dont think "error" in filing can lead to guilty of exploitation. Thats a felony with intent to hurt. It needs far greater substantiation, since it is a much graver penalty. Those nanny figures been quoted are for those with experience and are heavily distorted by the rich in Manhatten. Was she even a maid before Khobragade? For example in London the cost of a nanny is £1000 a week in many parts. But those nannies know French Spanish and Madarin. The aim is to teach the kids the language from a young age. I back Muloghonto in what he is saying. Disposable income wise Richards was better of. While she has fled to the USA she may soon find out that manual labour in NY is not all whats its cracked upto be. She is not going to be unionised labour. The min. wage is 8/hr in NY. Richards was paid 3/hr. A lot of calculations done on previous posts. Have a look.

I think Bank transactions say tht $586=INR30000 were transferred per month. Thats good enough for me. Instead of arrest, if USA expelled Devyani and made it clear to the Indian foreign service that this would no longer be tolerated. That would have been fine too. But I wont flare up nationalistic passions for arrest(for few hrs) of khobradage coz that too is justifiable.

How do you know that the rest of the amount was not paid in the US to her in cash ?

And you are kidding yourself if you think she was working only a 40 hour week.
